Default Transporting a hand gun out of state

Good day, I am moving out of California to the mid-west. I will be travelling by car and I want to take my beloved HK 9 mm with me. What is the best way to transport a personal hand gun across several states? Do I have to notify anybody? I want to make sure I comply with all regulations. Thank you kindly and God bless.

You have to check State/local laws that you drive through.

Consider getting an Arizona CCW. The majority of States accept it, so depending on where you travel you may be covered to CCW. While not valid in California, it may very well meet your needs.

It is an easy on line process, turn around time from application is usually no more than one month or so.

Federal laws allows firearms to be transported unloaded and in a locked container. The unloaded firearms and ammo can not be accessible while being transported. [18 USC 926A]

If you want to transport in a manner different than that, you will need to find the legal method of transporting firearms for every State you will be traveling through and comply with those State laws as you travel in those States.

18 USC 926A
Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.
