Default 80% AR Lower CNC in San Diego

This is not a build party thread. There is nothing for sale in this thread.

If you are interested in an 80% or other products please see my sales threads in the marketplace.

Please try and avoid discussion of group buys here (See above). I'd like to keep this thread in the gunsmithing area

That being said, if you happen to have any AR lowers you've recently finished post up some pictures!

Check it out guys!

Questions I often get.
1. Do I need to register it if I build a pistol?

2. Can I register it/should I register it?

3. I know I should put a manufacturer name and city, and SN#, model # and caliber info to prove that its mine.

4. Since I want to build a pistol, once they are finished can I legally buy a pistol upper even though it is not dros'ed.

Answers
1= NO
2= Yes/only if you want to. (no benifit IMHO)
3= Putting info on it is a good idea so you can ID it if it's ever stolen but is not required by law. If you ever wanted to sell it in the future it MUST have City/State, MFG, SER#, MOD, and caliber info engraved in it.
4= Yes. You can also buy a pistol upper before you finsh the 80's if you do not own any AR rifles.

5= I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice.

More pics to follow as progress allows.

Is that your mill or did you find someone to rent it out to you?

Either way, that's how you do it. I am curios what your cycle time was for the FCG pocket and trigger slot.

When using a CNC machine, do you still need a jig?

15 min for FCG pocket, 5 min for trigger hole, approximately.

yes, to hold the lower in the vice, if you look at the pics you can see the jig is in there.

My BRD has been in remission for almost 6 months, then you posted this thread.
I don't have an AR pistol ,but I DO need some.

Two years of BRD counseling and therapy down the drain.

i've wanted for a long time to try out building one of these 80% lowers but don't really know how to use a mill. i have access to a mini mill but was wondering is it as easy as it looks on the other sites like tactical machining forums? also is it legal to have an angled foregrip on a pistol?

Did you do the anodizing yourself? I ask because in your pictures, it appears as though you have a very nice matte finish. Our first round of anodizing produced a much shinier finish than we were aiming for. Do you have any pointers for achieving a matte finish?

And, what's up with your BB? I've never seen a plate like that. Not knocking it, it's just a unique approach.

The bullet button is pretty sweet, the way it works is you replace your hammer pin with a hollowed out one that's threaded on both sides, then you just bolt the little cover on. The 2nd bolt is a shorter bolt that you use only out of state when you remove the cover. Make sense?

Why 07? You've already made it, so it doesn't need a 07. Also, my understanding is if an Ano shop does it for you, you wait there AND it's done on the same day, they don't need to be an FFL holder.

This is the way I understand it also however, it is possible to anodize at home, just a bit of a chore though.

BATFE changed their rules in regards to 'finishing' about 2 months ago.

You will have to hack around to find it. The 07 requirement to do anodizing also allowed dealer samples of FA items ,so I guess they saw the 'problem'.
I picked up on this as I was painting roll marks and needed an 07 to do that !

what changed exactly? From what to what?

I reserve the right to be completely off the mark here. I was under the impression that an FFL was required because it is the registered part.

I have done this and still have all the equipment/chemicals. And I agree it was a chore and I would much rather pay my regular anodizers the $50 minimum lot charge. Better yet, would be to throw a lower in with a batch of our other parts and get it done for free!

ETA:
I found the atf ruling that you refer to but I am not too sure of it's implications. I read it to say that for some processes, such as anodizing, a manufacturing ffl is not required but a regular dealing ffl license is required. Maybe someone with more developed legal expertise can chime in here. Reading legal jargon makes my head hurt.

If you are talking about AR-10s, we aren't but if you have a JIG I think we can make it work. We got the file we are using for the AR-15 from CNCGuns and they also have an AR-10 file - so I have faith.

Because it will make for a new setup, we might have to make a separate AR-10 day. We can find out when we go there the next time.

The FCG pocket on the AR-10's are IDENTICAL to the .223 sized lowers. It's just not as close to the buffer tube. I have faith you guys will git 'er done as well.
