Default CHP Officer Norem Critcal Incident Video

Tell me that this officer didn't earn nor deserve his "pension"

I bet you he wasn't even think about his pension when this was going on.

Officer Norem is a stud and a hero.

Should have pushed the turd over - could have hurt a motorist below though so I guess he did what he had to do. Crazy action in that video for sure.

Obviously everything from here on out is Monday quarterbacking, but...

If only details of call was a suicide subject with a knife, may not be worth getting stabbed/ potentally not coming home to family. I dont know all of the details, however we (LEO) have no legal obligation to stop a suicide and may have only had a 5150 prior to stabbing. No doubt the officer had courage, bravery, and a big set of cajones, just saying for newer guys never take youre eyes off the ultimate goal (coming home safely to family at end of shift).

The problem was if he jumped onto the freeway, he could have taken an innocent motorist (or more) with him.

That was a tough situation. I've been stabbed three times in my life, and none of them felt good. And that cat was getting in some good stabs too. I dunno, I prolly would have let him go...or popped him.

I'm with you. If I wasn't concerned with him landing on a family of four on the freeway below I would have dropped him. If that were a danger I think I would have shot him. I'm impressed with the officers tenacity though and fortunately it worked out in the end.

We have 3 bridges in my city and i have recieved a couple encounters similar to this. In all scenarios, incoming units block off the freeway below in case the subject jumps. Again i work in a relativley small area with quick response times and do not know all details of this event.
The problem is once you go hands on with someone, you basically own them. So if you do get in an OIS, or physical with him and he falls off, you can bet family will say you instigated it and expect a payout. On the flipside if you do not go hands on family will say you did not do your job and expect a payout lol. Either way we are not legally required to stop a suicide and at least I for sure would go hands on with a subject with a knife but rather attempt to stop traffic below by communicating with incoming units. Ymmv.

Not a cop, but I would have let him fall. That officer deserves a great amount of respect and honor, along with the off-duty officer and the civilians that stopped to help. He made a great sacrifice in trying to help someone that could have cared less about either of their lives. I hope the bad guy comes to terms with what he caused and is grateful for the sacrifice that was made to save his life. Will have to look up the backstory on this...

He's a better person than I am. I would have shot him on the way down after swinging a knife st me.
