Well, you’re certainly never going to get your money back on custom work provided that examples of the base gun are still available and the shop you used is still around. That should be obvious. If one can still “get there from here” then why would someone compromise on your version of “there” if they had the money to just have the same custom work done themselves, and starting with a base gun they could be more sure about?

Your best luck would be finding someone who had eerily similar tastes, but was incredibly impatient, good luck with that though.

That being said, not ALL custom work lowers the resale price. You can’t tell me with a straight face that this, for example, is worth LESS than a used, off-the-shelf Beretta 92:
