Browning Buck Mark Contour -- Picatinny rail non-standard?
Hello folks,
New guy here and also new to firearms. As my first handgun I am about to pull the trigger (heh!) on a Browning Buck Mark Contour but I noticed something funny about the Picatinny rail for the California-only model. It looks non-standard -- in fact, not a Picatinny rail at all. You can spot the difference in the two pictures below. I want to be able to mount a red-dot device (Burris Surefire III) so what are my options? Should I go ahead and buy this model and replace the rail (is that possible?) or buy a different model and install an after-market rail? I actually like the added heft of the Contour, but not being able to mount a red-dot is a deal breaker for me. I'd appreciate some advice. Thanks! Red dot will mount just fine. Dont sweat it. Just google that gun & "red dot" and you'll get a million pics with every kind of dot mounted on it.

I started looking into this after I saw the post below from a while back. The bolt on the red-dot may be too thick for the rail.

Thanks! That's good to know.
I have decided to buy the red-dot sight (with Picatinny adapter) first and take it to the store and decide which Buck Mark model I should get. There are some nice after-market rails for non-Contour models. e.g. This one: https://www.amazon.com/Tactical-Solu...picatinny+rail |

I had BM Contour I mount: two difference kinds of red-dot, and then a pistol 4X scope. All three mount OK without adapter. Just make sure that the red dot has weaver or picatinny mount not the "dove tail 3/8 inches mount".

Follow up on Contour rail
[1] The rail on the California-only (i.e. on roster) Buck Mark Contour is nominally Weaver but deviates from standard. Specifically the slot width is 0.135" and not the spec'd 0.18".
[2] It turns out that the Burris Picatinny/Weaver mount has a dimension of 0.153". While well within spec, it does not fit the Contour's rail slot. I took the mount to the store and tried it on a rental Contour. It doesn't fit and ever-so-slightly rocks back and forth -- exactly what you wouldn't want a red-dot to do. An intrepid person could have the slot machined to be wider. Another alternative would be to buy the California Contour and then buy the standard-for-the-rest-of-the-USA Picatinny Contour rail from Browning. Or use a different red-dot (other than Burris) ... but then the next accessory you get may or may not fit ... |

I'd say just buy a buckmark that doesn't have the non-standard rail (lame) and then buy a Tactical Solutions picatinny rail for the buckmark.
I have a stainless buckmark URX (the one with gray wood grips, silver slide/barrel, black frame, fiber optic front). My view is that all buckmarks are going to be similar in accuracy with the biggest differences to be found in barrel choices. But internally, my time spend with various models has indicated that the internals are basically the same. I I could do it over again, I might have bought the very cheapest buckmark I could because I've upgraded and modded mine a bunch: TacSol 7.25" barrel and comp (pinned/welded), picatinny rail, Burris Fastfire III, and a Tandemkross flat trigger. I've also hand polished all sliding friction points (I left the sear and hammer alone) and experimented with the Heggis flip mod on the sear spring but my buckmark came from the factory with an under 4 pound pull so I actually put the spring back to the stock position. But with the trigger and the attention paid to the internals and I've got a pull just under 3 pounds. I'd love it if I could get this trigger to feel like a smith model 41 but not quite there.lol It's a good trigger, just not great. The Tandemkross cut down overall travel a good amount and has adjustable overtravel. The trigger is light, with short travel, but a bit of stacking at the "wall" before breaking, and it doesn't have the glass rod breaking feel when it does break. But very predictable and consistent. Much better than stock and a stock buckmark trigger is pretty darn good for factory. I will tell you that I love this pistol. You sound like you are on the right path! Have fun. I would widen the slot when you could easily take 2 hundredths off the width of the screw of the picatinny mount, or buy another narrower screw. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I ended up doing exactly this -- bought a Buck Mark Practical and put a TacSol rail and mounted the Burris Fastfire III on that. Works great!
