The closest place I can think of is Steele Peak.

Try PMing locations instead of naming them publicly for FFFK sakes.

Even if you think it's common knowledge, use some discretion or at least your brains. Letting everyone know only leads to your spot getting shut down!

Lol purer00r I am glad you enjoy that nursery and thank you for all your hard work in organizing the trimming and pruning of all the trees at this nursery

No prob! Ya, the maintenance on the place gets out of hand...need more gardeners willing to approach others to maintain their shrubs.

That's a pretty vulgar display of apathy towards those of us perceptive enough to recognize that literally hundreds, if not thousands of people will find their way to an already abused location. These posts will potentially remain for years, like so many others that are revived time and time again.

I guess the more people who find their way means the more trash for some people to organize those feel-good, pat-on-the back parties.

Reminiscent of firefighters who turn clandestine arsonists to maintain job security.

Flame away, I only concern myself with the opinion of my peers.

So what your saying is if someone can take the time to look at a picture that same exact person can Google the Blm Web page and get directions ,hmm then shame on the blm for posting up the locations to PUBLIC land. Anyone on calguns who thinks that every recreational shooter that is looking for a spot to legally shoot and enjoy a hobby or sport that is quickly becoming extinct in this state needs to ask them selves, is it better to get people out and informed ? Is it better to get more people to see the side of pro gun people? The only way that will ever happen is to get them out there and see for themselves. Those who flame me are only rapidly increasing the odds of creating more anti gun people. By the way can you please tell me who told mother nature how to get to steele peak? Because of her the BLM closed down steel peak " from May to November last year , they will use any excuse to shut that place down "

I am sure glad no one has the directions to Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Lake Tahoe and The Pechanga casino, we wouldn't want any low life's trying to hit a jackpot at our secret slot machine. Those people can keep playing the penny slots at the Soboba.

+1 On what Vaka said. I get so tired of people on here crying about not telling people how to get to a public land to shoot. Steel Peak is a BLM land its not your personal range!!!! If you hate that people dirty it up and dont take care of it dont shoot there thats why there are private ranges. Now dont get me wrong if you have a secret spot that you shoot at by all means keep it secret but Steel Peak is not a secret its a BLM stop being a self righteous son of a ***** and help out new shooters with a place to shoot instead of acting like BLM is a secret!!!!!

Default Steele Peak on a Saturday?

How crazy does Steele Peak get on the weekend? I usually shoot at Rainbow Range during the week but I have some friends that all want to go shooting together on a Saturday morning in about a month. Steele Peak is close but I've heard can get a bit busy - I've never been. Is there a lot of space? Should we be OK if we show up around 7-7:30? Trying to decide if it's worth it to deal with a little bit of people (how crowded is it?) to avoid driving all the way out to Barstow.

It gets really crowded on the weekends. if you get there by 7 you should get a spot. The last time I was there on a weekend we must of had 100 cars/trucks drive past us and we were all tje way in the back.

How far around the peak can you shoot? Can you go all the way around to the southeast side?

You can go pretty far back there. If the entrance is on the northwest side you can go all the way around to about the southwest side. You need a truck or something with some ground clearance.

There's quite a few areas that are marked no shooting mostly the spots facing east or over hill tops

No. I’m saying that the caliber of people who are not willing to put in the effort needed to find legitimate shooting spots shouldn’t just be handed the info that true enthusiasts worked to find and take care of.

I completely and whole heartedly agree with you on this point. However….. not all recreational shooters exhibit practices that are in the best interests of the community that enthusiasts share.

An enthusiast willfully seeks out information and training on all facets of proper shooting practices and etiquette. A recreational shooter just has a gun and an old TV they want to use as a target, and is looking for a place to marry the two and leave the mess behind for someone else to worry about. A recreational shooter thinks “hey, I need to find a place to shoot, I’ll google a local gun site”. Inevitably this once or twice a year shooter finds Calguns and shows up and trashes the place they read about.

Actually, to a certain extent, “recreational” shooters can specifically be to blame for fires related to shooting. Steel core ammo can directly be related to fires caused by projectiles striking rocks and generating sparks that result in brush fires. “Recreational” shooters that ignore BLM regulations could be to blame here.

A fire directly caused by sparks generated by impacts from a projectile is not an “excuse to shut a place down”, it is a definable reason to shut a place down. Hopefully, an enthusiast will follow proper safety guidelines and know his target area and backstop, and insure that they will not hit something that ignites a fire.

My point here is “don’t give away the farm”. If someone is serious enough to find a legal shooting spot, let them put at least some effort into it.

I have no problem with directing them to the BLM website and saying “here you go”. BLM land is for everyone, as it should be, and anyone should be able to access it.

When someone asks for a shooting spot and your reply is “oh yeah, I go to XYZ, check it out!”, do you think they will automatically know it is BLM land? Will they bother to call their local BLM district office and obey the regulations enforced by BLM? This isn't Utopia you know.

I’m not trying to win any popularity contests here, but I’m tired of seeing people just handing over to anybody who asks the keys to my home. At least know who you’re talking to for christsake.

This is the internet however, and you can’t possibly know who or what kind of person you are giving info to.

Look, you don’t know me, would you invite me into your home for dinner? Are you in the practice of letting strangers walk in off the street and use your restroom, how about reach into your ‘frige?

Desertrider by the sound of your screen name it sounds like you ride dirt bikes , please forgive me if I am wrong but spark arrestors are required and dirt bikes have been blamed for many fires and as As a result many old riding spots have been shut down to ohv. I am sure your aware of that though. On the fires caused by steel core ammo , well the executive action on green tip ammo will take care of that.

Look here, toOTHroTT, you didn't know my mom, so don't go making assumptions! Afterall, you don't see me going around telling people your ma is from merry ol' England, do ya? (get it? toothrot?)

I know SP is public, I only act like an *** when I'm making a point. I've given info on the place to others, but it's usually in the form of links to BLM pages or direct answers to specific questions not regarding identifiable landmarks or directions.

I still stick to my opinion that specific directions or coordinates shouldn't be freely disseminated on the 'net.

Call me jaded if you want, but I'm just tired of seeing the place trashed so often.

Absolutely!

And I feel the same way about giving out info on good riding areas to the people who ride bikes that don't have spark arrestors or are too loud.

I'm willing to give people the benefit of the doubt. I strongly dislike indoor ranges, and private ranges had been booked solid for a long time and closed for membership. Besides driving out to Barstow, Steele Peak was the closest legal place to go. When I tried to get directions, I was met with the same crap here. "If you were a real shooter you would keep looking and find it yourself", or "we don't share information like that on this site". That is BS.

But, I found Steele Peak. It is not that hard, and personally that place makes me nervous and I won't take my family there. When I went I brought trash bags, a rake, shovel and extinguisher.

I now belong to a private outdoor range.

I'm with the other guys here and willingly would help out a fellow enthusiast.

^^^^ Yup. But make sure there's decent tread on your tires if you don't have all terrain tires, there's a hill on the back side that can be difficult to climb back up when it's really dry out there. I've seen more than a couple of vehicles have to make a couple of runs at it to clear the top.

we should go shooting together it sounds like we have a lot in common, how about I provide the shooting spot and you provide the ammo lol . We have to help out others just getting started on taking up target shooting. Also to be fair my parents live around the steele peak area and most of the people that abuse that place are locals, some aren't even target shooters , they are general contractors that go up there to throw away their trash from clean ups that happen at foreclosed homes. lets not be part of the problem lets be part of the solution

I know where you're coming from, believe me. I couldn't tell you how many times I've been to Calico, Ft Irwin, Red Mountain, Goler, etc. The drive got to be too expensive a few years back when fuel prices started getting out of hand.

And I'll bet that the same people that make you nervous are the type of people I referred to as "recreational" shooters. The type that are unsafe and probably leave a mess behind.

You are the exception though, and not the rule. You are an enthusiast. There should be more people like you, but the sad fact is that you are in the minority, unfortunately.

Maybe we'll run into each other at SP some time. If so I'll offer you a cold one (non alcoholic, that is ) and let you have a whirl at my tacticool slingshot.

Yea, if you get there at 7-7:30 you should find a spot no prob. I was there last weekend and it was really busy, we had a calguns clean-up event. Just please keep the place clean, we work hard to keep this place open.

Thanks for all the info. We'll definitely make sure to clean up and drag a couple extra bags of trash out with us.

Thank you, we really cleaned that place last Saturday. Please be aware of the no shooting signs, just don't want any more ricochets going anywhere they shouldn't. Just be safe and always know who's around you. Have fun out there.

Made the mistake of going out in the early afternoon and normally never would but it was superbowl sunday but really wanted to shoot so went anyways. I figured all the weekend warriors would be at home. But ive never witnessed that kind of stupid before. A group of younger people (im only 23) were blasting ammo. One of them went to change a target and the others began shooting while he was out there joking around. I couldnt believe they would be that stupid. Packed up and left. Im only going out on weekdays from now on or really early in the morning on a weekend and packing up before 11.

Even that is taking a pretty big risk from what Ive seen at Steel Peak. I only go on weekdays now. And that policy applies to cleanups too. No way in hell am I going out there while jackasses are being dangerous with firearms.

Is it really that bad? We may want to hike it out to the desert if it's a safety issue going there.
