All things in life go through various changes, evolve and ideally improve with time. What is taboo today in the shooting world MAY have been totally acceptable in the '30s (in this instance). Just as shooting stances, philosophy, training, equipment and many other aspects of shooting have evolved through the years, so have safety considerations...thankfully for the better.

OBVIOUSLY the lack of concern for safety displayed in the videos is something that no one condones. At the time, however, maybe it was the thing to do...good thing neither of us was an officer at the time...especially downrange Again, needless to say, no one in his/her right mind should forsake the safety rules (which Jeff Cooper developed years later) with such blatant disregard.

Despite the above, I find the video interesting as a historical reference...and that is the reason I posted it.

Taboo or not, what the officers are doing is a violation of everything we know about firearm safety. I'd be willing to bet that guy who had the chalk shot out of his ear went home and cleaned the **** out of his shorts or at least had his wife help him pull his shorts out of his *** due to a pucker factor of 11.


I'd be willing to bet that even in the 1930's, no one enjoyed viewing the business end of a barrel, exhibition or not.

Its a historical record. It was "exhibition" shooting. They were doing it to impress and show off for people. Like an entertainment show. I understand it was dangerous but that was probably part of the allure. I find it entertaining to watch although would never duplicate it. America has changed. Could u imagine anything like this being done these days without someone having a cow about it and multiple lawsuits being filed? People thought differently back then. For example, I had a instructor who grew up in the 1950s tell me that back then, if you were working out or training for sports they completely discouraged drinking water because they thought it would make you weak and soft. Complete opposite today.

Ahh, range fees, $.25, with an on-site cleaner who cleans your pistol when you're done, and when's the last time you shot at the range with a suit and tie? Really interesting to see what's changed, and more interesting to see what hasn't in there. Thanks for posting!

These videos really show how far we've come. In 60 years someone will mock our current techniques without understanding the nature of evolution and that we are the product of our past.

In the future (unlimited by your imagination), projectiles can be initiated by anyone from anywhere. So, is all this moot? Perhaps not. There's a certain truism: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it". History is not just a wonderful subject but elemental to humanity.
