Default I didn't have to draw today.

Long story short I was at a local convient store. There was a crack pot harassing people inside the store. He comes up to me and tries to start an altercation. I express that I did not have interest in him or what he is trying to achieve. I'm 5"8 and he's like 6+. So he tries to mess with the guy standing behind me in line. The perp says he will be "outside waiting for us".

Me and the guy checks out I go first and he tries to mess with me I ignore him and walk off with my hand ready to draw. I walk away and then he turns his attention to the other guy who he tries to bait by calling him racial names that begain with the letter N. I feel no need to reiterate as I'm sure you guys already know what I'm talking about. At first the other guy insist he just want to get to his car. With nothing left the perp with no other options starts attacking him. So I end up calling 911.

Luckly there were Sheriffs patrol and a CHP officer who responded with in minutes of the altercation. I show them my ID and CCW. There was another bystander who also had a CCW. They take my statement. Still in shock. I know it's not a LOLing matter but the CHP officer said "you are armed and you told him you just wanted to be left alone?" I replied "yes".

Edit: I forgot to add that when the Cops showed up the perp tried to feign that he was the victim saying "thank you for showing up brother he attacked me for no reason"

Have a nice day. Learning experience. I bid you all good night and stay safe.

It took a couple minutes for them to respond? That's a lot of time you and the other customer could have been yelling "quit resisting" as you both wailed on the crackpot. Obviously, you've never worked for Fullerton PD.

The fight lasted less than two minutes. Had it gone longer the perp would have probably got it bad because by the time the cops arrived the brother had him in full mount.

OP, good job. I think you handled it well. You played it cool.

The fear of 'great bodily injury" is legally reason enough to use deadly force defend yourself or anyone else. But, I do agree that the OP did the right thing.

I took a class from Joe too and learned so many great things from in regards to different scenarios. He is also the one that enlightened me to our "moral code" and whatever it may be, we should all have one. It goes a long way in helping you to understand when you will be drawing your weapon and when you walk away. Everyone's code will be different but it sets the limits of when you act and when you don't.

I was thinking the same thing - the overall % of CCW in California is pretty infinitesimal. Having not one, but TWO ccw's there is gotta be pretty small odds. (perhaps you should go play the lottery - lightning can strike in the same spot right?)

Great handling of the situation and not drawing.

I wish I could write well on these tablets, but all the editing I try to do is complicated by too many factors out of my control, or reasoable control. So forgive me for mispellings and chopped up syntax.
I am writing this response in the spirit of this thread, and it is nowhere as intense as te original post by the original poster. It is a minor story of what happened last weekend. I will do this in multiple posts because I don't want to write it and then lose it when I try to post it. It is more about situational awareness rather than confrontation and my own decisional process. I am very new at this, so I mostly have opinions based on my values rather than actual experience. I am only trying to add to the spirit of this thread rather than hijack it. I really stand behind the idea "I didn't have to draw my weapon today as being first and foremost.

To better understand my mindset you might read the following link, or as Lawaii suggested, Rory Miller

htttp://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/five_stages.html

So, Fridays are errand days for my wife and I. This includes such stops as a restaurant for lunch, Costco, Trader Joes, Staters and such. It is typically a busy day when all said. Once in awhile we go to Tony's little pizza which serves one of the best Chicago Style deep dish pizzas ever. Located in a realtively middle income neighborhood where prejudice, gangs, bikers, and thugs are a rarity. No, it is not lilly white, but a peaceful, integrated and accepting neighborhood.

I have been carrying for a very short period of time. I desire to be an upstanding citizen, but I feel the need to be protected. The order goes like this: protect my family, protect myself, and protect others (if it appears they are going to lose their life, not their property becausr property is replaceable, life is not.

The day started out with my being armed. Amex, don't leave home without it. Becausr we decided on Pizza at Tony's I really wanted a beer. Pizza without beer is like pancakes without syrup! You know what beer means right? Time to disarm. With all good intentions in mind, I pulled into the parking lot and started to park my car. The guy next to our car created a very creepy feeling within me. The guy was a definite prison type mexican gangbanger tatooed with tear drops, pocked mark face, chrome chain steering wheel, just sitting there doing nothing. It just felt wrong so I parked elsewhere.

I felt better parking elsewhere, disarmed, and headed in for killer pizza and a beer. After we sat down I order two beers, a Samuel Adams for me and a coors light for my wife. Now this is where Marc Macyoung came to mind. He writes about 5 stages of violent crime. He has been around for a long time and a respected consultant of Rory Miller. I am not going to go in depth about the 5 stages, but I will mention them. They are as follows:
1. Intent
2. The Interview
3. Positioning
4. The Attack
5. The result? I wiil correct #5 later
good time to read this section though

Dang it, ran out of energy. Getting older takes it toll before you realize it. If you think I am wasting your time, let me know now. It is a lot of work writing this and I don't want to piss in the wind. Kapisch? I have learned, believe it or not, sometimes it is just better to shut up!

wissardd1 better have an ending to this 6 post intro to a story, or this has got to be one of the least-funny trolls I've seen in a while. Also, if you're worried about losing your post, copy and paste it into a note on a tablet, or a word doc on a pc before you hit reply. Better yet, if you're going to post a huge story and can't do it on a tablet properly, then maybe wait until you get to an actual keyboard.

OP, job well done and thanks for sharing your experience. It's refreshing to hear about restraint after all of the riot and "I'd kill anyone coming near my house" talk going on lately. I'm glad you're armed and one of the good guys.

OP....great job! Great restraint and getting 911 on the phone is perfect. People need to know this is all VERY SERIOUS BUSINESS. If it had gone south then OP would be in for a good ringing from all sides and life turned upside down.

Again I want to reiteraterate what a great job BigL did in using his restaint, keeping his emotions, and his Monkey Brain in Check. Both Macyoung and Miller emphasize keeping the Monkey Brain in Check http://nononsenseselfdefense.com/monkey_dance.htm

The Intent stage is all about situational awareness. One of the finer points of situational awareness is listening to your unconscious reactions that are telling you something is wrong and/or something is not right. In other words, "Danger Will Robinson, Danger Will Robinson. Obviously I had these alerts while parking and decided to park elsewhere

As I said earlier, I put in our order and we sat down (beers not served yet). A Tony's deepdish takes about 45 minutes to bake. After about 10 minutes, guess who comes through the door? Yep, The pock faced, prison tatooed Gangbanger. Looking at him validated my earlier reaction to him of yuck, this guy might be situation. He ordered something at the counter and sat down at the table nearest the door. He started playing games on his phone. He seemed focused playing on his phone, so I started to feel at ease. Then two more gangbangers walk in. One guy is about 6 ft and 250 lbs, dressed in shorts, high white socks, chuck Taylors on foot, and a hoody, but not on his head. Along with him is what appears to be his girlfriend. They ordered something and sat at the table next to us. At this point I am feeling uncomfortable, and deciding between getting my weapon, or just leaving and ditching my $32 meal. At this point, I get up and go to the counter and ask for my beers. After I set them on the table I told my wife I will be right back. I walked out to the car, took my weapon out of the safe, and holstered it, and walked back in and sat down this time sitting down with my back at the wall facing all three gangbangers. The couple had changed tables whereas now they were sitting in a table in front of gangbanger #1. They are all facing the counter with my wife sitting at about 45 degrees from them.

A lot of thoughts were bouncing around in my brain. Is this a situation or am Injust hyper vigilant because I am new at this? Am I making something out of nothing or is there really a possible scenario unfolding here. Do I avoid the possibility of violence by leaving or do I stand my ground? The beer in front of me is looking mighty good, but now I am armed (that in itself was a dilemma. I really like beer, one is sitting in front of me, and I can't drink it.

Sleighter, if you want me to stop I will. I will try to wrap it up in the next post. I just want to add to this thread. BigLs story is one of the best and most useful I have read, besides Quarterbores story.
