Default The future of M1A In California

I have chance to buy from a good friend, his Springfield M1A Loaded with NM sites. He is offering to sell it for a very good price. Has may good extras included. I have shot it once or twice and know it is dialed in and a sweet shooter. My favorite rifles are M1, which I have two, and reload for them, and will reload for this one too. I know that the M1A is similar. Would be use for target shooting and just maybe a high power match, if I get back into the matches.

My concern is the future California gun laws, and bans on semi auto rifles and our new Governor. I know no one can predict the future, but I do not want to buy a rifle were I need to register as a AW, and go down the road we had to do with our ARs.
Thoughts ?

Thanks

Buy it now before Newsom puts it on a list and bans it. He wants to ban all semi automatic firearms, only a matter of time when he gets into office then we are all stuck waiting for it to go to the Supreme Court to be over turned.

08-07-1924 = CA DROS of handgun registered it with CA DOJ.
01-01-2014 = CA DROS of long gun registered it with CA DOJ.

It's too late to avoid firearm registration, if you intend to buy any type of rifle in CA after 2013.

For CA, assault weapons registration just means it is identified differently in AFS and allows you to keep it after it is banned.

IMO... Buy it now, while you still can.

This is very hard to answer because, honestly worst case scenario everything gets banned.

But its not likely going that way since M1A Loaded doesnt look evil enough.

bottom-line? who knows?!

ALL bans so far grandfather in already owned firearms.

Only the mag ban attempted to require disposal of lawfully acquired property.

Like I said buy it now before the laws change, everyone already knows it is only going to get worse over the next 4 years, longer if he runs for POTUS, buy it now and enjoy it.

Buy it. If you don’t you will regret it one day. Worst case would probably be ALL semi-autos get banned. Not likely, but you never know in this day and age. If that happened you’d be grandfathered in. But if that happens and you didn’t buy you’d wish you had.

I love M1’s too. They are religious artifacts to me. I also have one M1A and it’s one awesome rifle that I LOVE shooting. Buy it before it’s too late. You will sleep much, much better.

Buy and don’t look back. You probably will bail on California and move to a free state when it gets to be too much for you. And you will have what you wanted.

If you already have two M1 Garands, I would just enjoy those and not bother with the SA M1A Loaded

chances on having to register as a AW are very high, they will probably have rifle roster and stop selling semi auto rifles with detachable mags, probably ban the Ruger Mini 14 , Ruger PC

I rescued a LRB from Calif. when I moved out. The dummies thought it was better to have a muzzle brake on it rather than the flash suppressor. What they don't understand is that the brake helps you recover from recoil faster so you reacquire the target faster. And it does help to a degree to disperse the flash, not a lot but better than nothing. I have the tools to replace the brake should I ever want to, not likely though. Buy a M1A they are fun to shoot.

Amazing isn't it, one of the most powerful weapons one can by in California and is overlooked because of its physical appearance. If you can get one at a great price do it

Buy it and enjoy it. If you change your mind down the road then sell it and get your $$ back. If you are able to get a good deal then you can't lose...

OP....As of today, you can still buy that M1A.

Buy it & plenty of ammo.

Like others have said, nobody knows what tomorrow will bring.

M1As and M1 Garands are two of the best looking rifles I have ever seen. I'm old and I have had and seen more rifles than I can remember, but these two always stand out.

I’d buy it if it’s a good price. They are fantastically fun iconic rifles. Who knows what the future holds for anyone. Get want you want/can now and enjoy it. If commiefornia comes after them in the future, comply or resist, or move. Until then, enjoy what little freedom that state affords you.

I already wanted an M1A, but for some reason this thread makes me want a Garand, which I had no previous desire to own.

Update:Went to check the M1A, which is 1992 vintage.
Work was done and set up by a former Marine Armorer, he went thru the complete rile.
Gas system has been shimmed to aligned so the gas port lines up with the gas cylinder, trigger was cleaned up to a nice clean break. Recoil spring guide rod upgraded and new spring. Sights are both NM. Estimated round count 500-800. Over all in excellent condition. Load data with 168 Gr SMK 42Gr IMR 4895 shows 1 1/2 grouping @ 100 yds (I think that was his load). Sweet.
Still on the fence if I will buy it, but leaning to the yes, and thinking don't pass it up.
Thanks guys with all of the information and suggestions, much appreciated

If I was in California I would jump backwards three times to buy anything semi auto at this point.
Pretty soon you'll need a license to own a sharp stick.

Caveat being that once it goes in to the RAW category, transportation rules become more restrictive.

I have fallen off the fence and I have decided to go for it. Get it while I can. Looking forward to bring her home, once she gets out of jail, and I will take her out on date at the range. Added bonus, I enjoy reloading and this will be a new cartridge for me. Thanks everyone for your input.

I’d buy it. M1A is a little more “newsome proof” than some other semi autos due to it lacking a pistol grip and ability to be fed via stripper clips. In demonrat terms, it doesn’t have a shoulder thingy that goes up.

Don't buy it if you feel that way. Personally, I'd buy and enjoy shooting it at public ranges in California until I couldn't. If they're going to come for my guns there's little difference between an AFS database entry from any post-2014 long gun DROS and one with the "assault weapon" field set

The legislature passed SB-374 in 2013 which classified all semiautomatic centerfire rifles with detachable magazines as "assault rifles".

Governor Brown refused to sign it because he feared the law being struck down in federal court, taking the rest of California's "assault weapon" laws with it.

Governor Newsom won't show that restraint when it comes to guns because he's driven by emotion from his grandfather threatening to kill his mother with hone then using it to commit suicide.

That law will be back in 2019, will pass the super majorities in both houses, will declare the M1A an "assault weapon" effective January 1, 2020, and will give you until December 31st, 2020 to register it if not converted to a fixed magazine version.

Following the next tragedy, the Democratic legislature and Gavin Newsom will come together in a show of gun-banning unity and add a "readily converted" definition clause or extend the "assault weapon" definition to include all semiautomatic rifles if they don't ban them as a new class of weapons like .50 BMG rifles.

They're evil, not stupid; so I'd expect a new category which will allow PC 30600 and PC 30605 to stand if struck down in court.

They already were banned once, which is why the flash hider is replaced with a muzzle break. I've got one of those fancy Norinco fake flash hiders for my national match, so it at least looks right from a distance!

You'll be registering it as an AW within 2 years, and ammo is going to be $2 a pop.

I wouldn't buy a centerfire semi-auto rifle. The next level of gun laws are going to make a lot of what we own nearly worthless. If you can't sell it, it's not going to have monetary value so what good is it?

Buy it. Put it on a boat. If it gets lost in a boating accident, then never talk about it.
