The tourists can have LA Gun Club, they've lost my business
I've been going to the LA Gun Club for years and have introduced many new shooters to the sport there but they've lost my business today. Not that they would really notice considering the flood of tourists that fill their showroom and point the guns in all sorts of fun directions as they take their selfies.
I found out today they recently changed their policy and no longer allow "outside ammo" to be used in their range on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. First it was "factory only" and now this. It's their right to mandate this as is my right not to do business with them any longer. I prefer to practice with the brand, caliber, and weight of the ammo of my choosing and not be forced to use whatever ammo they decided to stock that day. I was surprised they had lanes available with no waiting considering the showroom was full of tourists and now I know why. The people who actually shoot have probably taken their business elsewhere.

Wait until CA passes a law making loaning guns, including rentals, illegal....
Or the background check and safety card before rentals....

I have seen similar such behavior at outdoor ranges too. The only difference was that there they had rifles. |

I've thought about going there but never have. Heard lots of not good stories about them on many boards and in person. I go to FT3 and enjoy the experience but what I REALLY want to do is go outdoors somewhere. Haven't done that in a few years and used to go to Nevada. I hear about BLM's but still researching that.

I was there 3 or 4 years ago doing some practice with my wife. Dude and his chick next to me had a rental Mossy 930spx and couldn't figure out how to drop the bolt. I look over and I'm staring down the barrel of a 12 gauge flipped upside down, while he tries to figure it out. Full tube. Gave him a stern talk, alerted the rso and haven't been back since.

Well, then what exactly should ranges do for newbies? Nobody likes newbies and their potential barrels pointed in dangerous positions but also don't like them asking anyone for a "range" card to prove you know how to operate a gun either? Maybe all newbies should be escorted in and shown how to operate a gun before they start but that would take an enormous amount of people power and time. Any easy or quick answers? I have been to outdoor and indoor ranges and not knowing enough could make a bad situation worse or fatal. When most people thought the BFSC required to purchase a pistol in CA was a ridiculous idea, people frowned but don't we want people to know how to operate a gun before buying it? I saw someone at a unnamed shop tell the buyer to leave the shop because the buyer couldn't safely operate the empty pistol and come back after reading the book. That is honestly the smartest thing I've seen done. The buyer kept messing up even after the seller showed him how to remove the magazine and operate the slide and safety.

This is not a range comment.
Mine has to do with SAFETY. My in-law family ask to go shooting with me sometime. I of course told them sure, but, but, you must spend time at my home so I can train you on Safety first, before you go with me to the range for live fire. It has been years for me waiting for them to let me train them. No fun Safety training for them.

maybe 1) spend the manpower, have newbie pay. E.g., if you're a new shooter you purchase new shooter package which includes an RSO in the bay near you. maybe 2) have RSOs more actively monitoring newbies. Long time ago when I was going to indoor ranges I would hear RSO yell over the speakers when someone was pointing the wrong direction or doing something they weren't supposed to. I don't recall ever hearing that in the past 10 years going to indoor ranges at Jackson Arms, Reeds, and Target Masters. Could be there were no violations at the others, but I witnessed it 1st hand at Target Masters. The monitoring of the bays needs to be cost of doing business at a range for newbies and veterans alike. Just because someone has white hair and has owned their Ruger mk3 for 50 years doesn't automatically make them safer than a newbie. Neither 1 and 2 take an enormous amount of people power or time. If a range can't be bothered to have an employee responsible and paying attention to the shooting bays than that is a problem. When Chabot was still open I remember many times when RSOs would correct poor muzzle discipline. At the range I volunteer at in San Jose we have newbies come in all the time. It's a small range (5 bays) but there is someone actively watching the line and reminding/fixing muzzle discipline as needed. So, it is possible to have newbies monitored if the range cares about it.

I actually liked LA Gun Club since they have one of the most extensive list of firearms available for rent that I've seen. But yeah... they lost me as a customer when I saw that announcement on their website about ammo.

TERRIBLE range.
Will nickel and dime you for every cent. Will close early because they are lazy. Will not care when people muzzle sweep you, take selfies in lanes, and generally act incredibly unsafe. Will have A COW if you try to pick up your own brass....

I went here once back in 2005.
It was a ****ty range. Bad ventilation. Didn't have selfie tourists back then, but smartphones weren't huge yet. I rented a few guns from them and they all malfunctioned, because the springs weren't maintained, the guns were bone dry, and filthy. I mean EVERY gun. The Kimber I rented malfunctioned every magazine load, because it was clogged up dirty and recoil spring was worn out. The Ruger GP100 I rented kept spitting metal back into my face with every shot, because the cylinder was out of time. Very very bad range, and if this is their policies, I won't ever be back there again.
