Default It's Really Hard to Buy a Gun Here

Going to start paperwork on a new purchase tomorrow. Among the requirements are proof of residency beside my CA driver's license. Although, a pay stub doesn't count. Apparently, utility bill works. But I don't have any because I sublet. Hopefully my sublet agreement works.

Maybe auto insurance? I just cancelled my policy, though. Sold my car.

A rental agreement is fine. Just make sure your landlord signs it.

This is all what I needed provided that the address on the license matches the one on the registration.

Landlord or the person I'm subletting from? Because the landlord isn't available.

How do you plan to transport your firearm? How well do you know your roomates? How are you going to secure your weapon in your house; have a safe or something heavy duty to store it in?
Some of the things you really need to think about.

Not being negative, just have had roomates and had "things" mysteriously dissappear.

I already own a gun that I brought with me when I moved to CA. I've been here for a while. Transporting a firearm on foot, on a bike, on a pogo stick, on a unicycle, on public transportation, via jetpack, magic carpet... all those things are legal. As long as the gun is unloaded and locked in a case. I routinely break dance to the range every weekend. Nowhere in the penal code does it say that's illegal. My issue isn't with transportation or storage. It's with proving residency beyond driver's license (which I have). But if a sublet agreement is good, then problem solved.

Well I say you're boned until/unless you can convince the current person who is paying the bills to transfer one of them over to your name. Coming up with a believable alibi as to why you suddenly want that responsibility will be the hardest part.

As for the roommate trust thing, do what I've done for years: don't tell them.

You see, the State doesn't like people buying guns so they want it to be as big a PITA as possible. Good luck, though, putting together the necessary paperwork to prove residency. I'm sure a bit of creativity and/or persistence will you get something usable.

How about voter registration document with your address?
It's government issued.

that only works for change of address, not 2nd proof.

2nd proof ( some things have already been mentioned):
-current dmv reg with current address
-current Utility bill with current address
-rental agreement or lease
-Pilots Lisence with current address
-CA CCW with current Address. (yeah i know, i know)

you may have sold your car, but did you also get rid of the old, vehicle registration as well? if you still have that with your matching CDL, you should be good to go.

or do as warthog mentioned, and get the sublet agreement notarized.

Go to DMV and get an H6, it's a printout of your driving record and counts as second form of residency.

You are wrong. A handgun can be transported on public transportation as long as it's unloaded and in a locked container and the public transportation agency doesn't prohibit it. Remember, the laws governing transporting firearms in vehicles were originally written so people in the vehicle do not have ready access to a loaded gun for use in a crime. That's why we're required to transport handguns in a locked container like the trunk of the car, and the glove box is explicitly not considered a locked container.

I have always transported in a car or on me unlocked.

I would always disassemble my gun completely and keep the spare parts in a ziploc bag

I never had an issue but i never told the cop it was in my center console not sure the legality of this

Technically, its a non functional firearm with spare parts scattered to the passing eye. It would take tools and ten minutes to put it back ready to fire

What do you mean? When you disassemble your gun there are spare parts? Where do the extras come from?
And no, I don't believe this is legal. The frame is considered a firearm, and your center console is not locked. (to my knowledge)

Please read the thread. I have neither. And apparently, a rental agreement will work.

Why doesn't your list doesn't include a rental agreement or lease?

According to the law, that is illegal. Doesn't matter if the gun is disassembled. The "thing" that is defined as a gun (for a handgun, it's usually the frame), needs to be in a locked case. That's the letter of the law. Maybe there's a provision for a dismantled gun. But I haven't seen one. Otherwise you could walk around with a Glock slide in one hand and the frame in the other. Then just slap 'em together and shoot away. And that's ridiculous. Because then the law would have to define "dismantled/disassembled." How far dismantled does a firearm have to be to be classified as "dismantled"?

Go buy a fishing license at a local sporting goods store and then use that as your 2nd ID for proof of residency.

Yes, I used it for many transactions. Only problem is that most dealers think you are trying to avoid the $25 dros and 10 day wait with it. For some reason, I have to tell them very slowly that it is only for second proof of residency. I also keep a print out of the DOJ penal code that explains what works and have to show it on occasion to some working behind the counter.

Not true re matching license and registration. Just asked local gun stotrebthismwhere I buy as recently moved. I talked to the owner and not some new employee

One thing that no one has mention yet is that it is ultimately up to the FFL doing the transfer so although it may be on the list it may not be one of their accepted methods. It is always a good idea to check with your FFL before taking the drive down there (depending on distance of course) to make sure that you have everything you will need. Also, most FFLs wont tell you this but the proof of residency is only required before you leave the shop with the firearm so you can technically run around and get what you need during your 10 day wait, also recommend checking with your FFL on that one before going down there.

Examples of documents that are NOT acceptable proof of residency:

Hunting or fishing license (these documents are not issued by the government).
Cellular phone bill.

I'm not sure if an 03 FFL will work. It should because it has all of the required documentation on it but I've never used mine. Good question. You can have your parents fill out a standardized lease agreement and use it though.
