Default Homebrew Seafoam for much less $$$$$$$$

Seafoam is stupid high at $60 dollars per gallon. For what? Rubbing alcohol (91%)!

Here is a link to make your own for much less...

This preliminary testing recipe is approximately: 6.5 oz pale oil, 6 oz naphtha, and 3.5 oz 91% isopropyl alcohol.
3.5 ounces of 16 ounces is 21.875% isopropyl alcohol.

Your confused. 91% Isopropoyl is talking about the mixture of the ispoprolyl alchohol, its solution strength if you will. isopropoyl alchohol is a mixture of alchohol and water. In this case, 91% alchol and 9% water. There is 3.5 oz of this mixture in the Seafoam.

my answer is a paragon of precision. If you prefer 19.9% ((3.5*.91)/16) to 21.875%, separating the water from the alcohol, I'm OK with that.

Question

After looking at some of those recipes, it occurs to me that just squirting some diesel in your gas tank would be easier than mixing diesel and gas and adding it to your gas.

Not entirely convinced that it would be a good idea though.

1. Why would you want to add ANY water into your gasoline?
2. If you're buying quality branded fuel, why do you need to add anything to it, homebrewed or commercially-produced?

There's a lot that can be added to this discussion from anyone that understands modern gasoline engines or diesel for that matter. I'm probably at about a 3rd grade level compared to the guys designing and building engines. Short story, we use more fuel than our engine needs because some is wasted in "cooling" the combustion chamber. The higher compression, the more waste. That running "rich" all the time causes carbon buildup. Running something through to lean out the fuel be it water or alcohol can and dies clean the carbon buildup off intake valves and pistons. With modern fuel injection this occurs less (carbon buildup) but it's still there. This is why they sell water injection kits for race purposes. Water cleans and cools way better than the extra fuel does.
There was an old racers brew for cleaning engines that was 50% brake fluid 50% water... But you hold your throttle up a bit and pour it down the carb. Some guys swore by it.

why not just get a carberator that gasifys the fuel. You get the most mpg outta vapors if thats what your going for. Look up the fish carberator 100+ mpg depending on your number of cylanders in the engine.

lol to simply clear up what I said just read the link. bassically you can get a carberator that gets 100 to 400 mpg easy. A fish carb gets 20 to 40 percent better mpg but is not effected by altitude. but the best carberator is one that makes the gas into vapor which is the best and cleanest way to burn gasoline.

After reading all 318 of your posts I have come to two conclusions.

1. Your mileage is so amazing that you've never mentioned it.

2. Your English teacher owes you a refund.

Considering that I tend to add Seafoam to my crankcase as an oil additive and include some in the tanks of my vehicles every now and again one bottle tends to last a while...so I'm fine with paying the $10/pint rather than using a home brew that "may" work but "may" screw something up (the results at the end don't provide any scientific results...more along the lines of...didn't notice any ill effects). A lot cheaper to run down to the parts store for another bottle than it is to tear down the engine because something was mixed incorrectly and was slowly eating through a seal.

That said, I will have to give some Mystery Oil a try...I've heard good things and my last bottle of Seafoam is out so I will pick some up next time I run down to the parts store.

Oh and considering this is the Survival/Prep section, I would advise that anyone using this stuff consider it a nice to have and if you own anything with a motor that has a carb, you learn how to tear it down and clean it out using simple tools and a rag. Same goes for fuel injected cars/bikes and understanding their particular issues. They are much more difficult to clog up, but once it happens its much more difficult for the home mechanic to clean without damaging something...if they can clean it at all.

Along those lines. I drove a Pontiac Grand-Am for 535,000+ miles doing nothing more than changing the oil with the cheapest oil I could buy. So all these wonder cures mean nothing to me. I was only looking for a way to keep gen gas from getting sour. I did change the oil in my Pontiac on a regular basis and I think that is the most important thing for a car.

Oh I absolutely agree, however per my comment I add Seafoam as a oil additive that is added everytime I change the oil. This is primarily done on my motorcycles as, to your point, the oil plays a much more crucial role (wet clutch, cooling, etc) than in a car. I've noticed that the best course of action is the first time you do this to add the seafoam into the oil prior to your change, let it run for 50-100 miles, change the oil and then add more seafoam to the new oil. The oil will continue to be cleaner each change and I've found that all of my motorcycles shift better and run smoother.

Half a $7 can on the air side does wonders for old combustion chambers, siphon the second half the next week.

Replacing your fuel filter is MUCH more important than a silly additive.. you have no idea how much sediment you are pumping into your tank from the station.

The fish carbs go on ebay from time to time but that doesnt gasify it just is a better carb then a regular. They stoped production because they were harrased out of buisness. If you want the gasifer then look on that site and make one from the many patents it mentions. Ultimatly you need to make it your self or get a machinist to do it for you. The only down side is when you need to get your car smoged you need to switch it out because california are clean enviornment nazis so only aproved stuff can run i.e. factory installed or o.e.m. Also just do a google search "14 year old boy has made a car that gets 1980 miles a gallon" lol I dont know if he made a gasifyer though he did it by maximizing the cars mpg potential by managing the weight and speed

On a side not I got a stalker whos read ally my posts lol And Hes A Gramer Nazi lol way too goo you completed high school but were not taught that the way to defeat someones statement is attacking it not their charicter. Thats logical falicy 101 lol
