Yes. The finished frame must be transferred by an FFL holder. There are many vendors of semi-finished frames that are free from this restriction.

Please lists these vendors because myself and about 50 other people I can name and a few thousand I can't would love to know. We've been looking since the list went onto effect.

My information on the semi-finished M1911 receivers may be out of date. A few years back, there was a running report on building a handgun in this fashion, on this forum. The writeup on semi-finished Thompson receivers illustrates the general legal principles applicable to all firearms:
http://www.thompsonsmg.com/RECEIVER%20PAGE.htm
SVI sells finished M1911A1 frames and slides. Their 5" Infinity Traditional Target Pistol in .45 ACP is certified for sale in California through 7/23/2007.

Trust me when I tell you that CA does not allow bare frames to be sold new in the state. The only way to legally get a frame is to find someone living here who has one and is willing to sell it. The SVI, STI, Caspian, Les Bear, Ed Brown, Para-Ordance, Wilson, RRA, Thompson, Entreprise Arms, and other's bare frames are forbotten in CA.

Your only option for a custom gun is but a mil-spec 1911 and go from there.

On a lighter note here's some SV's

and an STI I used to own

A Caspain in 9mm from a frame I've had for years

A Springfield Operator that started as a mil-spec Operator. Now with Bomar, STI hammer and safeties, and S&A magwell.

Not meaning to cast doubt on your testimony, I note that the DOJ seems to engage in creative misreading of relevant statutes.

How do you like your SVI guns? I am undecided between them and another pre-war NM Colt as my second .45. I wish they would offer more traditional control configurations.

In my opinion there is no better 1911 style gun than the SV.

SV Infinity is like Burger King, you can have it your way (if you live in a stater other than CA) they hae a deal on thier site called gunbuilder where yon can option just about anything.

Regrettably, they do not offer triggers, hammers, and safeties in original M1911 or M1911A1 configurations.

None, outside a couple of old skool replicas we can't get here.

Beavertails are great for people with some meat in their hands...the hammer bites are really nasty for some people.

I have a friend that gets bit by the slide on high powers.

You gotta pay for that low bore axis somehow.

There's some great eye candy here.

Is my Safari Arms frame the only one made with the finger groove built into the frame?

Default Colt Delta Gold Cup 10mm

Here is an unusual 1911 I've had about 7 years - a Colt Delta Gold Cup in 10mm. I don't shoot it much because the ammo is expensive compared to .45, but it is a good shooter. It is stock except for a trigger job I had done to bring the pull down to 4.0 lbs.

That fine gun is in the safe with a new Wilson extractor installed and a new set of grips. I took my son out this summer and broke him in on handguns with it!. I even got my liberal seed nephew from New York (22 yr old) to shoot it. It sits in the safe next to 2 38 super commanders and a some 45's. I'll see if I have a photo somwhere. RB

I no longer can find any vendors of semi-finished M1911 frames. Neither can I find any state law that prohibits a nonlicensee from making a gun for his personal use, provided it is not for sale and the maker is not prohibited from possessing firearms. Note that under federal and state law, a person is prohibited from making a semiautomatic assault weapon or assembling a nonsporting semiautomatic rifle or nonsporting shotgun from imported parts.

I would be interested in your opinion as well as far as comparing the Springfield Professional to the Ed Brown Special Forces and possibly the Les Baer Thunder Ranch... I'm curious as to your thoughts regarding the hand filed checkering on the Professional vs. the milled checkering on other simi-custom 1911's out there. Could you feel much difference? Also wondering how you like the chain-link frontstrap on the Specal Forces? I've also noticed that you seem to have landed on Gunner Grips. Do you sand the sharp edges or use them "as is" out of the box? Know of a good place to purchase? Thank you in advance. Please accept my apologies if I am annoying you with my questions.

The Ed Brown and SA Pro are very similar in build quality. Both are excellent and I wouldn't rate one any better than the other. (although SA does use some MIM in the Pro while Brown uses no MIM in their guns, if that matters to you).

Both of my SA Pros and my new Brown have been 100%, right out of the box. Totally reliable (with RangerT and Gold Dot) without having to be "broken in" and very accurate.

I don't own a TRS, but I do own a Baer Stinger and it's a 100% reliable gun as well, but the fit-n-finsh isn't quite up to the level of EB and the SA Pro.

The 20LPI checkering on the Pro is extremely grippy. Some say too grippy. I have girly-man hands and it shows when I shoot the Pro a lot. If I shoot it often, I get a nice callous build-up so that the checkering no longer bothers me, but if I don't shoot it for a while I generally get a bit of a blister after a few hundred rounds.

I really like the "chain-link" on the SF. To look at it, it doesn't seem like it would be particularly grippy, but in actual use it does the job, without being too sharp. Someone on another forum commented that he didn't notice the chain-link texture unless he specifically concentrated on it. I think that's an apt assessment.

Coilspring
I love the Gunner Grips and use them on all my 1911's. I modify the texture depending on the gun they're being used on. Since the EB and the Pro have textured front and rear straps I "de-horn" the Gunners with 120 & 220 grit sandpaper. This makes them a lot less "grabby", which I think helps for being able to adjust your grip a bit if you get an imperfect hold while drawing from the holster. On my guns without texture on the frontstrap, I tend to leave the Gunners alone for maximum grippage.

The Chain Link on the Special Forces is really cool. It's much more grippy than appearance would lead you to believe, but of course it's not grippy like the 20lpi on a PRO. I really like the 20lpi, as it works best to keep a consistent grip and seems to help my groups at 20-30 yards. With the 20lpi, you can run completely smooth grips if you want, and have no issues. With the Chainlink however, it's not quite to that level, and I think you would want to choose grips with at least some checkering or other manner of "grippiness".

I never shoot more than 200 rounds in a range session, but I do load some pretty stout range ammo for my .45's. I have never been uncomfortable with 20lpi (which is also on the MSH, by the way), and I went from full-time banker to full-time law student - so I hardly have the hard hands of a carpenter or electrician.
