The May 23, 2020 Match has been CANCELLED. While restrictions in Los County seem to be more strict than others, things are currently looking good for a possible June match.

Another great SCSA match at SWPL!

I arrived around 9AM, shot my two divisions, and was packing up my car in time for lunch. I made acquaintance with some new squad mates that were kind enough to let me join them, and even ran into a fellow Alum from College that I had not seen in like 13 years.

Looking forward to July 25th.

Damn, there were a lot of people out there today. I probably started shooting at 9AM and didn't finish until about 1PM which is unheard of.

I guess all this advertising on Calguns is paying off!

Nice to see a larger turn out, but does make for a longer day.

Yep, but bring your gear as you’re not going to want to watch once you see all the fun!

You'll need approximately 250 rounds, any Pistol or Rifle (Rimfire or Pistol Caliber) of your choosing, and 5 magazines if you don't want to reload in between strings.

Thank you for the info RoundEye.

Is there a bracket for newbies? My wife and I are very interested in getting into competitions (for fun), but we weren't anticipating joining anything until we became more proficient.

As for 5 magazines, do they have to be all 10 rounders or does it not matter?

Having 5 mags of whatever capacity available just makes it easier going for all.

Don't worry about how you stack up against other shooters, there will be all levels of ability there. Just show up and have fun. Let the RO know you are new and they will walk you through it. Remember the fun part! You will get better as you do it more. We all started at the first match too!

Okay. Wasn't sure if they all needed to be standard CA 10 rd max, or if we had some freedom week magazines that was acceptable to mix in.

Thank you PM720! I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't at least be competing against my wife Definitely sounds fun! Do a lot of Calgunners attend these matches? Would be wonderful to meet and thank all the helpful members who have answered my questions.

A lot of the people at the match are on Calguns, but surprisingly not many follow this particular forum. I used to shoot this match regularly before COVID, but haven’t been since. It’s a fun match and I hope to get back to it soon.

It looks just plain beastly and the extra heft up front does help manage recoil a bit better. Plus, an angel told me that when God called JMB to heaven it was to build him a full rail 1911!

Default New Guy, N00b questions

Just moved back to LA from out of state and want to start competitive shooting.
(Long time shooter, just never competitively)
Questions:
-Does my firearm need to conform to CA laws?
-Is the Steel Challenge a good place for a n00b to start?
-Is SWPL a good league for a n00b to join?

You don't necessarily have to adhere to the handgun roster requirements as you're moving back. I believe that you are "technically" required to complete a form for the CADOJ and "register" any firearms that you are bringing into the state. It is not legal for you to import Large Capacity Magazines. Unless previously registered with the state of CA, it is not legal to import firearms that meet the definition of an Assault Weapon.

Yes, and it's actually quite fun and challenging. The start position is either from the holster for centerfire, or from a low ready for rimfire, and rifles.

Yes, they run month Steel Challenge and USPSA matches on the 4th weekend. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming to newcomers.

If you're only shooting one division, then 250 -350 should be enough. It just depends on how many makeups you fire.

You're allowed to start with 11, and each stage has 5 targets, you shoot each of them 5 times, and there are 6 stages. So if you fire every shot for every string, you'd be looking at 330.
