Ask in the hunting forum.

The AR has plenty of power for a coyote. Get a couple for me!

CA has more coyotes per square mile than any other states except for Nebraska and Texas. I got more there per year than I have since moving to AZ.
A good location, a quiet vehicle, a pair of binoculars, camo clothes, a good caller; all add up. Rifle (and scope) dictated by environment. My heavy barrelled .220 Swift that worked so well in CA is useless here. Ruger Mini-14 with 2.5 power scope works fine here, where most shots are at yotes darting in and out of brush.

I am curious as well. I have been looking for spots to learn to call. I checked a spot near Dulzura the other day. Not sure if its legal to hunt on the BLM land there so if anyone knows that would be a great help. Either way I'm just trying to call them in at this point. My real question Is, can I just leave a dead Coyote in the field or am I required to take my kill. Also, what about hunting at night there?

Good question SoCal,

I called the ranger that in in charge of the area that you asked about and it turns out that it is legal to leave a coyote in the field. It is also legal to hunt at night.

Not sure about all areas though, so check with the ranger/officer that patrols your local area to be sure.

Which shooting range allows you to shoot coyotes? Maybe I can set up my electronic caller behind the 300 yard berm.

You can hunt fur-bearing and non-game mammals at night as long as your not in one of the restricted areas spelled out in the law.

You can't use lights, and you can't use night vision.

Do you need any special stamps/tags for night hunts?

It'a also legal to sit on bait to but you can't spot light during an open deer season.

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.

How do tell what your shooting if you can't use a light?
Its been years sense I called coyotes at night but we had a flash light?
I know you can't have a spot light in the same vehicle as gun

Do any of you have experience hunting Coyote with a 17 HMR rifle? I've had one for almost 10 years and I've read that they are more than capable. I have never tested its power on anything but paper and aluminum cans. Just curious of the experience of other Calgunners I guess

I've seen a .17 hmr drop coyotes, deer, and bobcats. The .17 hmr is a fast round. Plenty of power to do the job

Plenty of bad info in this topic. Night hunting with lights is legal in almost the entire state for coyote and non game animals. The only closed area is the southern part of the central valley and an area by the bay. You can never night hunt if there is a big game season open in that zone. Roughly all the national forest is limited to 9v light on head or in hand. Roughly all the desert is any power of light and it can be weapon mounted or from a car as long as that car is not on a public road, and not moving. Apparently no one here has considered reading the regs. It will take about 2 hours for u to outline the night hunting zones by reading regs. Some county, like san diego, and san bernardino, have other laws that prohibit night hunting in all and some areas repectively. You will be stopped, you will be harassed. LE dont know the regs. Carry the laws and maps with you. People see spotlights, dont know regs, and call the cops. Go to predatomasters forums for info on how to hunt song dogs. I recomend byron south coming to the call part 2 and 3 to get u started. Low power scope on .223 is perfect. You are only required to pick up game animals. Again its all in the regs so read up. Good luck, and dont use a hmr unless u want to practice tracking....

Thanks for the info stockranger,

I wish reading the regs was all it took. It gets complicated for me when I realize that different areas are managed by different agencies that each have their own regs, on top of that, other local laws can apply. How can I know if some agency that I didn't think of made a regulation that I didn't think to look for. That's why I like talk to the folks in charge of enforcement.
