Default CCW reasons...sacramento

i'm still trying to get an appointment with the sheriff's office in SACRAMENTO for a carry permit, but i'm wondering what "reasons" you guys used during your interview...

i'm afraid i'll get declined if i dont have a good enough reason...ive heard mixed things about getting one..

for myself, i just need it for personal protection. for example, i go fishing in the very early mornings near a bad part of town...i think thats reason enough, but i'd like to hear what reasons YOU gave during your appointment..

Just read through the narrative in the Sacramento sub-forum of LTC. Since Sacramento turned shall-issue, the good cause is a simple one liner. Keep it short and sweet.

http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=382367

As previously stated by member Wildhawker....

"Dear Sheriff Jones,

I wish to carry a firearm for self defense and the defense of my family.

Sincerely,

XXXXXXX"

Anything more than that can and may lead to additional scrutiny and headaches."

Hope that helps.

THIS IS THE RIGHT ANSWER. Say this, don't say anything else, it just opens the door to questions that can become problems. Print the letter if you can, use decent paper and sign in blue ink (so they know it is a bona fide signature and not a copy). Keep a copy for your own records.

The Sac Sheriff Deputy spoon fed me "self-protection and protection of family" after Sheriff Jones took office. Prior to that I had my business and rental properties as reasons.

They pretty much did the same for me. I left my "good cause" statement blank. The first guy that interviewed me(and went over the application), gave me a blank piece of paper and told me to write my statement, sign and date. I wrote "I would like a concealed weapons permit for the protection of myself and my family." Signed and date at the bottom. I handed to him and asked if I needed to go into details. He said "you got the magic words" and that was it.

Self defense is all you need in Sacramento. It isn't necessary to go into specific scenarios you might need to carry.

Simply put, "I would like a concealed weapons permit for self defense."

I have my initial appointment in 2 weeks. I have the application that I'm going through, but other than the completed application, is there anything else that you should be bringing to your initial interview? (proof of address, etc?)

Also, just to clarify, but basically the way that the process works here is that once cleared per your initial interview, you then have to take your CCW class, and then go back to get finger printed and NICS check done and all that, yes?

Interview is all about what you wrote down on the questioner. They will just review it in front of you.

Procedure AFASIK

Make an appointment
Initial/personal interview
They will send you a acceptance/denial letter
Take the ccw class and get finger printed
Set another appointment for final processing (signing the permit)

That's how I understand it as well, thank you.

Question But, as of 08/06/2014, the app states...

"If the CCW license is desired for self-protection, the protection of others, or the protections of large sums of money or valuable property, you are required to explain good cause for issuance of the license. For example, has your life or property been threatened or jeopardized? Explain the incidents and include dates, times , locations, and names of police agencies to which these incidents were reported."

Is this just to be ignored now?

You're say'n , that "for personal protection of self and family" makes the grade?

Just want to hyper clarify. The way I see it, I only got one shot at this...

Yes. Ignore the "required to explain" part. That is there to discourage people from applying.
Just stick to the single line and you will.be fine. I got mine in Feb.

SSD is quite pro-carry.

That line is there to ensure that you're not trying to carry under pure fear, vindictive reasons or an "imperfect self-defense" to commit justifiable homicide.

for my renewal I wrote it into the application but for the initial interview they wanted it on it own. (that piece of paper looked funny with only about 12 works on it)

Thumbs up Sac county preliminary interview as of August 2014.

Pretty easy going.

Be sure your two pieces of residential indicia are up to date within a few months. Despite instructions to the contrary, they asked me to complete the top 80% of page 9. They only want to be in charge of questions 2 & 3 at the bottom of that page. Keep your letter of statement brief. They prefer it that way (Use examples stated above, really). Any more and you’re probably rambling on about something crazy. Show up in a shirt and tie maybe. Business casual at the very least. They’ll appreciate that and you’ll be taken more seriously.

My interview was pleasant enough but, often emphasized any questions regarding past arrests with police or restraining orders. I guess a lot of folk conveniently forget such details. Just take it all in stride. All questions were read off the app. Total time, 15 min.

Upon completion of the interview, I was invited into an office where I was introduced to a detective or officer of sorts. He repeated some of the questions off the app while typing into a computer. What, I’ll never know. Was this the back ground check? I’m really not sure. Total time, 5 min. And then… I was off for the rest of my day

Now I wait. 30-45 days
