Default Looking for a place to shoot informally

I live in Oceanside. I'm looking for a place to informally shoot that's reasonably nearby. Riverside Co. allows shooting east of Hwy 371, which fits my definition of reasonably nearby. There is a range out that way, but Steve1968LS2 tells me that the company that runs it is "somewhat crappy" and besides, I'm looking for a place to plink.

Is there such a place near the 371?

I've been there. I like the place. Prices are OK. People are friendly & helpful.

The problem is that the maximum range is 25yds. I'd like to shoot out to at least 100yds.

Mulay, you might try Pala. I've never been there myself, so I cannot vouch for it.

http://www.ncsapala.com/index.html

or the Rainbow Gun Club.

http://www.rainbowshootingrange.com/

Again, I've never been there and know little about it. Iron Sights is about my limit these days. The days of shooting under the old Bonsall bridge are long gone. All my old "causal" shooting spots have all built up or closed off. Good luck

Respectfully,
Kyle

Thank you.

But Pala & Rainbow are both membership only.

It really IS too bad about the Bonsall Bridge. I used to go out in the De Luz canyon area to shoot. That was LOOONG time ago. As you say, another area closed off.

Sigh.

Try BLM land outside of Ranchito. Pala is great, $65 to join, shoot on Monday's and Friday's. I've hit 600 yards at Pala with a 16" AR.

I'll check out Ranchita.

I didn't like Pala. Just don't.

How often can you hit?

That's the one that Steve1968LS2 denigrates at the start of the thread.

Mrs. Pedicaris likes to shoot at Sacramento Valley Shooting Center, whenever she can sneak a gun out of the tent in her petticoat....

There's a couple of shooting areas in Big Bear (SBNF) and they're free, but not a 100yd range though. Have you been to Burro Canyon?

Part of why she's a great deal of trouble.

I'm assuming your asking about Big Bear? There are 2 designated shooting areas off of NF Road 2N02 (dirt road) off of Baldwin Lake. Best to call the Ranger Station or BB Discovery Center (909) 866-3437 to confirm they are open before heading up there.

Check the website too: Big Bear / NFS Arrastre Recreational Shooting Site 1

From the website, it looks like they're open but you still need an Adventure Pass (pay a trespass fee) to park on NFS land in the SBNF Site 1 & 2 are within 1/4 mile of each other. PM me if you want more info or better directions since the actual sites and turn-off can be easily missed if your not paying attension. Also, It may snow this week-end though. Springtime is the best time to go (after the snow melt but before fire season) and make a camping weekend of it !

Sorry I haven't been here lately.

Anyway, Baldwin lake & burro Canyon are both further away than the places I can shoot at already. I guess I'm going to have to suck it up & get used to making long drives.

Sigh.

My thanks to all that wrote in.
