Not exactly 'tactical' but they work for me. Left is a 1898 Krag-Jorgensen in 30-40 Krag made in the Springfield armory. Center is a 1958 Winchester Model 70 in 270 win with Leupold 3-9x40 and bedded action. It shoots MOA just fine, as long as I do my job. Right is a newish Winchester Wildcat 22LR for teaching my boys to shoot and for when I don't feel like spending $25-50 on a 25 rd box. Both of the C&R rifles were my grandfather's before becoming mine.

My shotguns don't sit still for photographs very well.

Our family. We will probably add a S&W 386 XL Hunter, and finish the daughter's .22 upper by the end of the year.

Distance is a relative term. It depends on what you are trying to see, and its relative size. I conduct training in thermal imaging, so I could talk for weeks about your question. The simple answer is, even the $1200 units can see about a .05 degree temperature difference, between pixels standing next to each other. Depending on the manufacturer, they take 5 or 9 pixels sourrounding, average all of those to give you an individual pixel's temperature; This means to see a difference to the human eye, you need a big target, able to fill 5 or 9 pixels in size, or a large temperature difference. Once again, "large" is a relative term, in this case 10 degrees or a color palette with many colors. In the $8k range currently, a distance to spot ratio of 392 to 1 is pretty average; meaning if I am 392 inches away from a wall, each pixel on the display is 1 inch by 1 inch square. Everything inside that 1 inch square is averaged temperature-wise.

So depending on the target, and the temperature difference of the target's background, these can see very far. Law enforcement helicopters use them all the time, easily from altitudes of >500 feet, looking for a human, at night when the sun is not warming the ground. If you have DoD deep pockets, miles can be achieved.

And if you are looking for less than $3k, look at the FLIR I3, it has a 60x60 detector, and can be had for <$1200.

This us no where near the whole "family". Just snapped a quick picture of my HD/SHTF setup that I keep loaded and outside the safes.

EDIT:Received a PM asking for specs.

Ruger Mini 14 with 30 round grandfatherd magazines. Magazines loaded with hornady 55gr BTHP gold match. Magazines with black tape are loaded with 62gr steel core light armor piercing ammo, in case I need to shoot through cinderblock, cars, light body armor, ect... Home duracoat job. Nikon BDC prostaff scope. Molle cheek rest. Polished trigger. Not pictured is my magazine pouch with 9 addional magazines.

Remmington 870 custom. 6+1 capacity. Mesa tactical side saddle. Mesa tactical LEO stock with hydraulic recoil absorbing buffer tube. Magpul MIAD pistol grip, which holds extra cr123 batteries for the surefire 618lmg forend. Home duracoat job, flat tactical grey. Limbsaver buttpad. Round in the chamber is a hydrokenetic "less" lethal(manual states it is a lethal projectile until it travels at least 14 feet) round, followed by 2 #7.5 birdshot, and 4 federal 00 buck. Side saddle carries 3 00 buck, and 3 3inch magnum hexolit32 1 1/8 oz fragmenting/seperate wound channel slugs.

Sig Sauer P226. 18 round grandfathered magazines. Gold dot 147gr+P ammunition. Trijicon night sights. Tlr1s weapon light.

Israeli NBC mask with extra filters. Not pictured, full NBC gear, 55 gallon drums of distilled water, 930 assorted MREs, about 22,000 rounds of ammunition, military issure manuals about; IED construcion/incindieary devices/explosives/booby traps/guerrilla warfare/hand to hand combat/fortifying a fixed position/NBC warfare/small units vs conventional armies, barricades with mounts for fortifying my doors and windows, and LOTS of other paranoia gear

Hope that answered the PM.

The evil side of my collection...doesn't include the hunting stuff, gear or accessories. Still trying to save up for and decide on a variable power scope to replace the Primary Arms red dot on one of the ARs.
