The A5 has a set of friction rings under the foregrip that can be flipped depending on if you plan to shoot high brass or low. Its probably set to be shot for high brass right now, I'd bet if you switch the ring position and try low brass it will eject just fine.

LPA sights, and I know this gun is not for the purist. It wasnt pretty to begin with when i started. I bought it used and it was a beater, when i cleaned it literally mud was falling off the inside of this thing. It was made in the 60's and looks like it had never been cleaned since then. The barrel was pretty much wrecked past the where i cut it, so i figured ehh project gun! I looked into buying another barrel but the barrels cost more than i payed for the gun.

yours is cool. how do you like the ribbed barrel ? how do you like the rear sights?
So I picked this 50s vintage A5 up a few years ago for about $150. it had been neglected and was filthy as heck and had a cracked stock and a severely damaged barrel that had already been cut and damaged. So i got a ramline stock and cut the barrel back to where it was safe and shot it a lot. it ran ok but i wanted to do more It took a while to gather the parts but i found new wood ( the new butt i found had already been cut), sent the barrel to Briley and had a bead and thin wall choke installed. Another friend refinished the wood with a nice oil finish and i had a decelerator installed and had the stock cut short. Not knowing how many thousands of rounds this thing had in it, I had every spring replaced and new friction ring and completely cleaned the inside. I decided the leave the metal bluing in the well used and carried state its in. with the Modified choke from Briley, it patterns very well. here she is. my new Clyde Barrow commemorative. barrel is 18.3 and overall length is 35. pretty handy little home defense gun. sorry to any A5 purists who are offended. |

the hard part was the time involved. finding good wood on ebay at a good price took a while. the work at briley cost about $200 and took a month.
i paid a gunsmith to completely rip the guts out and clean it and put in the new springs and decelerator. i didnt feel confident enough to completely pull an A5 apart. if you do, go for it. if it had been an 870, no problem. but the innards in the A5 can be very tricky i could do the recoil spring and friction ring, but im talking about the action itself is very involved. and a friend did the wood refinish for free if i lived in free america, id go NFA ( note the $200 fun ticket) Last edited by ElToro; 02-10-2013 at 12:23 PM.. |

Very nice guns, mine is cut to 18 1/2"s. the look of these are awesome. I disassembled the entire gun and ill tell you what it was no easy task putting it back together!! I plan on puttig a rebuild kit in this thing but havent been able to find one so i might just replace the spring in the tang and recoil spring instead. I do have a question what is a decelerater?? And how does it effect the action on these guns.

A Pachmayr decelerator is the rubber butt pad usually cut to fit and installed by a pro but lots of guys do it themselves. these A5 came with a hard plastic plate. you are quite ambitious taking that thing apart. ho do you like those screws that have to line up oh so right to just get them out.
theres no real way that i know of to not have the action beat itself up other that changing the friction spring setting. ~100 years and at least 5 million +of these A5s and countless savage 720 and remington 11s around and they all seem to run forever. i tell you mine had 50 years of gunk and funk inside and had been neglected and it still ran when i got it. a lot of guys shot the hell out of these and never did much more than squirt some 3in1 oil in there back in the day. geting good wood is harder and harder, especialy the foreend. in a pinch you can run a ramline that NFA A5 is not mine and lives in Tennessee, i just swiped the pic as an example of my ultimate JO fantasy NFA A5 . Its down to about 15 inches. the min you can go on an A5 and still have enough barrel to clear the front end. briley cut mine to 18.25 and install teh choke and a new bead Last edited by ElToro; 02-10-2013 at 6:00 PM.. |

Yea im alittle ambitious but im also trained, while in the army the sent me to small arms maintenance course. I was also my unit armorer for 1 and half years. Ok i was just wondering what the decelerator is, I have a limbsaver on mine and works awesome.

I agree, it is a shame to see a really fine shotgun get hacked, but I guess if it has outlived its usefulness as a game gun so be it. But I would leave the wood on.
I've got 3 Belgium A5s, you might be having a problem because you shortened the barrel. It is not a gas system, but it does require a certain amount of recoil to cycle and I think it might be timed. Just a thought.

BTW - The barrels of the A5 can be changed in like 2 minutes (I'm sure the OP knows this). I have a spare cut down (but non NFA) barrel for one of my A5s, which makes it a good bit shorter. AND Nordic components makes a very very nice extended magazine tube for them.
