New components... new load. H335, Hornady 55gr FMJBT, Primers?
I got some new components and want to run a load by you guys...
.223 mixed brass, primarily PMC (understand the case capacity is a little less than LC brass) Hornady #2267 55gr FMJBT w/c H335 Choice of primers... CCI #41, CCI #400, CCI 450, Tula SRM 556 Rifle = 16" Stainless recce profile barrel with a salt bath nitride treatment (melonite) - 1:8 twist Most of my past loads used BL-C2 so H335 is somewhat of a new powder for me. Ive loaded it in the past, but never had enough of it to really give it a good run, plus I was loading a different weight of bullet. I picked a COAL of 2.208" (cannalure barley visible) Thinking of the following charge weights... 23.0, 23.5, 24, 24.5, 25gr What primers have you guys bad better luck with when using H335? What charge weights have you had good luck with? How high did you load up H335, and with what primer and case before you saw pressure signs in your rifle? Did you crimp? I know every gun is unique, but just trying to get some ideas before I start pressing loads... trying to maximise the use of my components in these tough times... |

Do you have a reloading manual? Here's a shot from my Hornady guide. I would do 5 loads at the minimum (20.8) and work incrementally to the max (23.2).

Yes... I do, but thanks for posting the Hornady data.
Hodgdons website shows 23.0 to 25.3gr Speer #14 shows 24gr to 26gr Hornady shows 20.8 to 23.2 (same as mine) Ive always noticed Hornady to be on a low side... manual written by lawyers I guess. (Then again the BL-C2 exceeds what Hodgdons recommends...) General consensus online seems to be around the 24.5gr to 25gr as the preferred loads to get velocity up, but its still not at M193 levels. I'm not necessary trying to duplicate M193, but I would like to keep it as fast as possible without the accuracy going to total crap. Unfortunatly I dont have a chrono to really test this stuff myself. |

Wow, my load for H335 is 25.5 with the same bullet. No signs of pressure or flatened primer. Stacking the shots on top of each other too. I did work up to that. Had some 25.7's that weren't as accurate though. Primers were cci400 and WSR. Upper is a RRA "16 1/9 chrome lined.

I load 25.1gr of H335, Winchester SRP, Hornady FMJBT, 5.56mm casings only, Crimped.
I get stacked groupings in the 1/2-1" range. 16" Midlength Daniel Defense CHF Barrel, 1:7 Twist. |

I moved away from blc2 some time ago and have been using h335. About 24-25.5 grains on a 50-55 grain bullet. Consistent, clean and easy to meter. I use either CCI srp or tula 223 non magnum for non match and federal match srp for competition loads. Only new LC on my competition loads.

Ok, I was just testing a similar bullet-powder combo yesterday. Keep in mind this is using a Sierra Spitzer 55 grain soft point boat tail. These are all shot out of a 16" BCM midlength using a 4x optic 100 yards 5-10mph wind. All 10 shot groups PMC brass CCI 41 primers.
The flyer on the right of the 24.8 group was due to the shooter next to me. I knew I pulled it. If you take that one out it is damn close to a 1" group which is good for me. 24.1 grains 335=2770fps 24.3 grains 335=2800fps 24.6 grains 335=3020fps 24.8 grains 335=2850fps 25.2 grains 335=2850fps (weird huh?) 25.5 grains 335=2870fps

My load coming out of 14.5" barrel.
2.230 OAL (half crimp), H335 loaded at 24.0 gr, CCI 450, no crimp, mixed brass. 2892 FPS. 1.0-1.5 MOA. I'm happy with it. My 20" barrel required me to bump down to 23.5 gr to maintain 1.0 MOA.

That extra length (2.255") with a 55gr may not be needed, but if it works, then go for it. One thing it will do is decrease bullet jump distance which is usually a good thing for accuracy.
Try a ladder with 2.235" AND another one with 2.255". Whichever delivers best group sizes will be the bullet jump distance that is best. Use a chrono and chart velocity too, as the velocity is what the barrel node is all about. My bet is each ladder will show smallest groups sizes at the same velocity points. The seating depth that shows smallest group size when you hit barrel nodes is now the jump that bullet likes best in your chamber. Find a velocity node that tightens group size AND then find a bullet jump setting that tightens groups even further and you are doing some real load development work here. Finding velocity nodes first, then running the nodes again with various jump distances is the right way to do this. Increasing OAL reduces case volume which changes velocity so that is why you identify the velocity nodes first. Then experiment with seating depth at the same velocities. |
