One more time
Some might recall that I had an arthroscopic surgery to my right knee due to a lot of pain and a possible minor meniscus tear. The results were that 1/2 the cartilage was gone and the remaining shredded. There was also osteoarthritis. The dr. said I need a knee replacement, but since I've seen what my wife went thru with two of those and a revision, I didn't want to do it. I also have grown tired of surgical pain in general.
Well, the pain has become worse and more importantly, I'm putting extra stress on my left knee which has needed one for about 7yrs. from 4 on duty injuries. Since I don't want two of them, on Friday morning, I will be getting a replacement to my right knee at 7:30am. I'm due to return home on Monday, but don't know when I'll be back on. I'm sure there are others here who have gone thru this, either due to duty injuries or just age. I didn't want to join that club, but like the back surgery club, I am going to be doing so. Damn. All of you take care and to you active leos, be safe. |

I need one too, the other day I was at the range there was a guy there that had it done two weeks ago and said that he stopped the meds. My father in law was riding his bike after 1 month and he is 80.

Have you considered Synovial Fluid Replacement? You might want to talk to your doc about it.

filric48, I'm hoping I will fall into that category and do fine. MaHoTex, I've been trying to enjoy it, but the body is falling apart right in front of my eyes. I had a neurostimulator implant put in my back just beneath the skin like a pacemaker in 2011. The two leads from it go up my spine to the epidural space at T8. It has decreased the pain level to some extent, but not completely and some days it feels like someone is sticking a knife in me and moving it around. Hey, it beats the alternative of not waking up each morning. Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement and nice comments. I plan to work just as hard in PT as I did when recovering from my back surgeries, even tho I don't have the goal of returning to work as an incentive. I will have my 6th shirt from the PT place when done, tho it was never my intention to start a collection of them. |

I've had the Orthovisc injections and it didn't do anything for me but make it hurt more. It was a series of three weekly injections and you can feel the pressure inside the knee as he doc is injecting the fluid. It was the worst shot I've ever had. It's supposed to provide relief for up to a year but it didn't provide squat.

Best of luck to you. Mine is down the road a bit. On the bright side I have friends who have had them, and said it was one of the smartest decisions they made. Once the initial pain was gone, they were able to do nearly everything pain free, within the limits they were given by the doc.

My mom had a bad first knee replacement...but the revision, and second knee replacement, have been revelations for her. Truly changed her outlook on life, she much more positive and upbeat.
Good luck! They've come a long way with knee replacements...much less healing time, less pain, etc.

My freshman year in highschool I had surgery on my left knee. Missed half the school year bed ridden wearing a special brace, and then other braces later on.
The bone was breaking away which created a new socket, my knee would pop out and pop into the new socket where it locked up. Very painful very long recovery. Knee surgery sucks. Hope your back at it in no time |

Seriously Retired? How are you supposed to "enjoy retirement" when you are having all of these surgeries? I seem to recall that you had some electrical stimulant thing for your back too. Crappy price to pay for a retirement.
Good luck sir.

I just had my left knee replaced last August after seven previous surgeries and it is amazing how much better I feel. After living on pain pills for the last fifteen years it's a huge relief not to need them now.
My knee felt better on the second day after the operation than it did in the previous fifteen years. I went back to work at my desk job seven days after my operation and didn't take a pain pill until I started physical therapy.

Best wishes on an easy recovery for you. My father in law had both knees done at the same time. He was up walking in a week and after two months he was good to go. He suffered wsith bad knees for about 20 years. He said that he should have done it a long time before. He got his quality of life back. Good luck and hope your up and around quickly. You know how messy it gets around here when your not around to set them straight.

Good luck Retired and hope that you get well very soon. I also need a knee overhaul and some other over hauls around the corner due to brutal duties.

I'm looking at that down the road since a Jet Ski accident shredded half of the meniscus and as you know it just gets worse with age. Hope you have a speedy recovery and breeze through the process.

Good luck, brother. My wife had her left knee done last year, and it improved her quality of life so much that she elected to have the other one done this December. Best wishes that it does the same for you.

This is the first time I have felt physically up to sitting at the computer due to my ongoing lightheadedness problem. I will be logging off as soon as I finish this and return when I can.
First, the knee surgery itself went well. The severe episodes of pain, the lack of a decent nursing response when that occurred, did not. I was in the last room at the end of a hallway and always got the excuse that they had 5 other patients to take care of. When I was doing fairly well that was understandable, but when in agony and I had to wait 1 to 1 1/2hrs. for a nurse tho I was told they were coming, it wasn't so understandable. I will never return to Riverside Community Hosp. even tho my 4 back surgeries there didn't go like this one. I began experiencing periods of lightheadedness whenever I sat up or stood in the bathroom to urinate. That ended my PT walks. I realize my failure to eat a lot contributed, but they never really did much to find out if anything was going on. I went home on the 21st. When I walked with my walker, I was fine, but when I sat up or went to the bathroom, the lightheadedness not only continued, but became worse. I was home for about 5 days and was in my bathroom when I became real dizzy. My wife had me sit in a chair and she held me up. She told me later my color looked like someone dead. My daughter (an LVN) said my blood pressure was 80/60 and pulse 120 (not so good). I recall my daughter saying she was calling 911 to have an ambulance take me to a nearby hospital (Rancho Springs in Murrieta). I passed out sometime during all of this for about a minute. I came to when the paramedics arrived and went off for a 4 day stay in the new hospital. My white blood count was a bit low and my hemoglobin was at the low normal, but they couldn't find anything else wrong. I was still having a hard time eating, but I forced myself to do so. I've been home since about the 29th and tho I'm eating more, I'm still a little lightheaded under the conditions described. I went to my family dr. yesterday and my hemoglobin has improved .5, which is good. He said I just need to continue my intake of food and this will pass as there is nothing else wrong. So, there is the update. Being 63 has a lot to do with this more difficult recovery I'm sure. It is a fact older people take longer to heal and sometimes don't heal as fully. I know I will get better, it will just take longer this time. Thanks for all of your well wishes. I am sure you guys were wondering what was going on, but as I said, I just wasn't up to being on the computer, not even the laptop. I'll be back when I can. Take care and be safe. |
