Default Long range shooting

Any good public place to shoot long range. I've been to Angeles and looking to shoot further.

How far you looking to shoot?

The main rifle line at the Twentynine Palms Pistol and Rifle Club has target holders at 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400yds with some dingers out at 500. The secondary line has IIRC some targets out at 1000ish yds.

Here is a link to the membership application. http://vote29.com/gunclub/

Membership is only $60 a year, with no per use fees.

OnEdit: Membership has increased to $60 a yr

We are blessed to have 600 at Angeles. Most public ranges across the country are far shorter than that. There are some private clubs around that go to 1000 but, they are not open to the public. If you find a public range in the LA area that goes past 600, let me know.

Steve, my son is a grunt at 29 Palms. I go down from here in the SF Bay Area from time to time. My question is, only members can shoot at this range. Nearest range near the base is in Morongo? but that range only goes to 200 gong if I remember correctly. Thanks

I live in Eastern Riverside County and there are a ton of long range open desert 'shooting ranges'. I would copy a google maps link but I dont want my spots overrun with shooters. However, I have at least 8 great spots! I have been stopped by sherrifs and BLM Rangers a few times. They ask a few questions look at the guns. Some will try to run the serial numbers on the weapons but that is considered an unlawful search. They cant be too smart driving up on 6 guys with AK's and AR's.

Thanks for your son's service. Former Marine here myself.

The Morongo range is not the closest. It is about 30 miles from Base. The closest range to Base is the 29 Palms Pistol and Rilfe Club. It is east of town on Hwy62. Turn onto the road for the County Dump and when you get to the dump gate the Club's entrance is to the right.

There needs to be at least one Club member in your party to shoot at the range as the gate is locked (changed yearly) and only members get keys.

If you don't know a member you might be able to get someone already at the range to sponser you and the day use fee for that is $5 per person. But you would have to leave whenever the last member present wanted to lock up.

I am out there MOST Saturday mornings from about 0700 - 1000 and would let you shoot upon payment of the $5. Look for the red/black F350 extended cab and a guy that looks like Santa.

I'm kind of looking in the same thing. The shooting we have here is 300 yards max, and I'd like to start stratching my legs out to about 600-700 meters. That is a fun range, and while 1k is a dream someday, (and i have the physical abilities to do it) but the parts just aren't there yet. I'd like to build a low grade 1k yard rifle like a .308 so I can learn the basics with wind reading, barometer, and more. I know all of those things play into a factor a bit more with that round. I'm jumping in head first with a 700p, base, scope, bipod and bag, and trigger trigger trigger. After that I'd like to take a workshop at some point if there is one up here in my neck of the woods. Ultimate goal is working out loads and finding myself making consistent sub MOA groups at 800 yards. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooog way to go.

If you know anybody stationed at Fort Irwin we have a awesome sportsman club here. Members run the range. There is a dedicated pistol lane, shotgun lane, and a 4 position station that goes out to 1,000 with a steel target. Happy shooting brother

Desert Marksmen is a nice club and the 1000 range is sweet.

The match days are open to the public both for observation and participation there. very friendly to new folks also.
The next long range match is May 31st.
http://www.desertmarksmen.org/calendar

Right now they have matches and classes in most disciplines except trap pretty much. You can also hunt and camp on the property if you are a member.

Depending on where one is, Coalinga has long range. you need to join the club, but the fee is very reasonable.

Santa Margarita Gun Club holds 1000yd matches. They are open to F-class and iron sights. You have to shoot the match course of fire and do pit duty. Go on their website for the schedule and more details.

Desertmarksman is extremely limited on times and dates one can shoot past 600 yards.

There's a waiting list join. But, the Coalinga range is one of the best in the state. It's available to use unless there's a match going on. On site camping, RV hookups, hot and cold running water, showers, FLUSHIES!!!!, BBQ pits and even a steak house and oyster bar just a few miles away in the middle of town!

There are a lot of public land areas where you can shoot as far as you want. Contact your local BLM office.
