Yes. MOA = minute of angle. Google search for comprehensive explanation.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that a 3 MOA dot would cover approximately a 3" circle of target @ 100 yds.

Well...if you want to get exact it's 3.141" at 100 yards

Easy simple answer: The MOA on a reddot tells you how big the red dot is at a fixed distance.
100 yards is 1 MOA or 1 inch (not exactly but close enough)
so 3 MOA at 100 yards is 3 inches (not exactly but close enough)
step it back a bit
1 MOA at 25 yards is 1/4 inch
so 3 MOA ar 25 yards is 3/4 inch and so on

So you need to know what distance the MOA is defined for on the reddot

Yerman and Penny's Dad covered the MOA and 100yrd questions, so I'll just chip this in...
Red Dots are amazing for quick targeting of close objects, but sorta blow at longer ranges if you want any pinpoint accuracy.
Make sure you are buying the correct type of optic for the task.

OP, I'm planning on picking up a FFIII for my p226 soon. I've shot a friend's MKII that has one and they are really great, good balance in terms of optic size while still being low profile.
He made a mount for his so it attached directly to the standard holes in the barrel for Ruger's rails rather than using the rail and a picatinny mount. I'll try to get a picture of it when he's back in country.

I have had a number of red dot sights and my opinion is that anything larger than a 3 MOA dot may leave you wanting a better sight. Also bear in mind that when one increases the intensity of the dot that they tend to get larger except in the most expensive sights. So if starting with a 5 MOA dot and cranking up the intensity level one can have a fairly large dot.

I didn't even know they made 8 MOA red dots. That's worse than China clone airsoft red dots.

I prefer smalle dots.

The 9moa that was on the trijicon RMR was not to my
taste.

Primary arms has the Bushnell TRS-25 on sale right now. It's a great mini red dot and is perfect on top of my 10/22

Here is my 22/45 with the TRS-25, I have not zero'd it. Been Busy shooting her with the Dawson FO Front Sights. One Thing I can say is that the TRS-25 is extremely rugged. 5000+ Rounds through my Saiga AK47, it held zero all day every day.

Nice set-up!

Got a HIVIZ fiber front sight and Volquartsen target sear. Trigger pull is a nice 3lb! Might buy a Volquartsen target trigger to fine tune the take up/over travel

I chose the TRS coz it is dependable. My Arsenal AK had it and it held zero well.

I figure if you copy the bullseye guys you are getting a good rig. Good enough for camp perry, probably good enough for me. ;-) Ultradot is what I went with. Very nice rig. Good luck finding your red dot. They are a lot of fun to shoot with.
