Help me decide: Ruger Single Six C, Ten, or SP 101 .22LR
Heard iffy things about the SP 101, but loading seems a lot easier.
Leaning towards the Single Six Convertible at first due to its versatility, but thought about it some more... don't think I'm going to be using the .22WMR as much. Single Ten has more capacity, though slimmer 'gunfighter' grips, but also has fiber optic/adjustable sights which I had planned to upgrade on the Single Six if I were to go that route. Similar price as the Single Six too. Thanks. |

Oh ok, thanks. I'm hoping to check out Turner's this weekend as they have it somewhat on sale for their Fall flyer-- not sure where to start in terms of other local shops.

SP101 is a nice revolver with fiber optic sights and well balanced. It is accurate, reliable, & I love the revolver except it has a heavy double action pull.

I maybe leaning towards the SP101, since I think there are trigger jobs/fixes for it now... hmm... |

I have an old friend that has an old (early 1970's) single six.The box and everything. He offered to sell it to me once. If you are interested and wouldn't mind driving to OC, I could ask if he still wants to sell it?

If you were up here in SF, I'd let you try the heavy DA trigger. I do plan on getting a trigger job too because it is absolutely needed but I still love it!

I have a bearcat. Bought it for my son but who am I kidding. I bought it for me!! Get the single action 22. Funnest shooting gun you'll ever own. Can't tell you if convertible or not. Gonna ever shoot 22 mag???
Also the bullet diameter in 22lr and 22wmr are different. Might affect accuracy. Dunno.

That's ok, Bob. Appreciate it! I like that model as well, but I think I'm sticking with Ruger

I had a SP101. Very nice revolver. The weight of the trigger pull never bothered me and I was able to get surprisingly good groups out of it using DA. Single action is sweet, too; short and crisp. If you get one, make sure you take it apart, clean and lube the inner workings before you take it out to shoot. I read a lot of reports of gritty triggers and the cause is... GRIT! There's a bit of stuff in the lock work from the factory and if you don't clean it out, the surfaces may gall up.

This. My first .22 revolver was a Single Six. I now own 6 or 7 S&W .22lr revolvers with swing out cylinders and no Single Six. I don't mind single action revolvers in centerfire at all and own quite a few but in .22 they annoy me.

I have a Single Six convertible, and a SP-101 in .357, but it only has a 3" barrel and rudimentary sights. The Single Six is fun, but loading/unloading loses it's thrill after about the 3rd cylinder. My SP was bought used, so the trigger was already broken in, although I have changed the springs on it. Shooting a double action revolver is much more enjoyable to me than a single action. I have the SP-101 .22LR on my want list, it's about the best DA .22LR revolver we can buy here.

I voted for the SP101 but with the cost of ammo now days........single action would save money too!

I have all three of these fine firearms.
The SP101 .22LR is fun to shoot at ranges from 8-10 yards in double action. It is not good for much else, but for this it is great. The trigger is stiff. Damned stiff. Not a deal breaker but it is stiff. I love the Single Six convertible. Great fun to shoot .22 WMR once in a while. That is a great round. The Single Ten is great if you want to shoot .22 in single action. The extra four rounds are cool to have. The Single Ten comes with nice FO sights. You aren't going to go wrong with any of these choices; I enjoy firing all of these guns. I personally do not have a problem loading the Singles -- after awhile you get pretty good at it. I have heard, perhaps incorrectly, that there is not really a good way to lighten the trigger much on the SP101 because the heavy trigger is necessary to provide adequate striking power on the firing pin. Lighten it and you start getting light strikes. Someone who has successfully done this might be able to enlighten us.

I would personally go for the Single six conversion. They are blast to shoot, even with the slow reload times. I have a Williams fiber optic sight set on mine. I shoot the .22 LR more than I do .22 Mag but I like having the option of both from the same gun.
Even though it holds more rounds I wouldn't buy the single ten Last edited by land locked; 09-24-2013 at 11:38 AM.. |

I put a deposit on the SP101 .
Thank you, all. Apparently they're sold out at all Turner's-- just the display model. I went to the one in Norwalk, and the display model was scratched up. For those of you interested in one, the Fall sale is over... luckily they honored me the sale price. But I have to wait for them to ship one from the warehouse before I can start the DROS . Hopefully it's not too long. |
