Default The precision 6.5 G build

My next rifle will be a featureless 6.5 Grendel for precision shooting and hunting so needs to be 7 lbs max before optics. What parts would you guys recommend to meet this goal, budget is about $1,500.00 OR less without optics.

Good luck. I used a medium profile 16" barrel, standard BCG, FCS stock, UTG SS PRO forend, and came in at 6.5 lbs. w/o optics.

You can save weight on the BCG and maybe a little on the stock and forend, but it will cost.

AA has a lite 16" barrel available for $195 now, if you are OK with that barrel length, I would jump on it.

If you are going for precision why go light too? Wouldn't you want the heaviest longest barrel you want, with solid stocks?

Want to stretch it out as far as you can?

A bolt action with a long barrel.

Before you scoff just hear me out.

Grendel has very little case capacity and when restricted to AR-15 mag lengths has very little leeway for long COALs, both of which conspire to keep velocities low. In order to get the best velocity from Grendel you need to use a longish barrel (22-24 inches typically). For a precision rig where you expect to fire more than a couple of rounds for any given course of fire you'll probably want something with a 'heavier than sporter weight' barrel. For a given weight of 7lb you'll have a handier and shorter rifle with a longer barrel in a bolt action than in an AR and greater freedom of COAL.

That being said, depending on how far you intend to shoot there are plenty of good barrels out there. AR15performance.com (user Constructor here IIRC) has well regarded barrels and would likely turn one to a thinner profile if you asked really nice.

When it comes to grendel, I can't think of any BAD barrels out there, it seems to me that everyone is pretty happy with whatever barrel they have, if you believe the internet.

For a lightweight hunting AR where you don't expect to use copper bullets a 16 inch barrel is about as good as it gets. It won't be speedy, but it'll be fast enough with 123 grain SSTs for 300 yard shots on deer and antelope without worrying about whether your bullet is going to expand; which seems good enough to me.

I've been thinking of building a 6.5 Grendel using the CZ 527 7.62x39 action as the base... CZ sells just the base action for $486 which gives a great starting point for the rifle...

Quote:
Yes, we offer the base action of 7.62 x 39 for the 6.5 grendel builds. The item is 00026 and the cost is 468 plus 15 shipping for action. You will have to have your FFL call us and order it for you.

I like Black Hole Weaponry (Columbia River Arms now). I'd suggest Ballistic Advantage if they made a Grendel barrel.

What stock are you planning on using? Some of the featureless options aren't light.

Precision and lightweight usually don't go together. There is often a nice middle ground, however. I don't think I'd want a 22-24" barrel for hunting.

What about mid weight 18" midlength w/13" hg?

Mine is heavy with that fat barrel and long freefloat. That's why it works so well. Grendel isn't about saving weight.

I have a 16" Alexander Arms button rifled barrel and bolt combo that can't hold any better than 3 MOA. With most loads it's between 4 and 6 MOA. I would call that a bad barrel.

After my experience with that barrel, I don't think I'd ever buy a barrel from Alexander Arms again.

Seven pounds shouldn't be that hard, here is mine fully kitted out and I could easily shave a pound off and still leave the bipod on

You don't need a long barrel or a heavy profile for hunting. Ive killed deer out 600yrds with this rig. I shoot in at Sac out to 1k all the time.
Make sure you get a mid length or rifle length gas system. If your barrel wont shoot factory hornady amax great- sell it and get another

If you want to go all out With a 1500 budget for precision/lw build you can buy something like a lilja 19" 9310steel barrel that weighs 2.2 lbs (500ish) that is headspaced to their bolt of choice (90)
A 2a Balios receiver set (500ish)
A precision trigger of choice (100-200)
A LPK (30)
a buffer/RE kit (35)
Stock (??)
handguard of choice (125-225)

Top Quality all the way, no sacrifices. It would be hard for me to spend more than 1500 on a build; im not into the titanium bits.

I will be humping this around the mountains hunting as well, so needs to very accurate and not too heavy.

Black Hole Weaponry has a 20" .264 LBC (equivalent to 6.5G) light profile. I would not have a 6.5G with less than a 20" barrel. The cartridge can really have some legs, with a long enough barrel.
