Started making a couple of knives

And decided to share progress with you all.

Got 3 blanks 12"x1.5'x0.187" of 1095 steel from amazon (https://www.amazon.com/RMP-Knife-Bla...r=8-1-fkmrnull)

blanks as received from Amazon:


Notice a hardened edge on each blank... Hacksaw or file wouldn't touch it.


Decided to make 2 knives out of 1 blank to start.



Going with this shape-ish


Beveled the edge using a file, following contour of the belly, then tapered the sides so the profile changed a bit. Also rounded the top edge



Then decided that I will recess the blade into the bolster a bit, so went with this treatment



And this was sent off today to be heat treated, while I work on the other blade, buy brass for the bolsters and wood for 1 handle. The other handle will be wrapped jute micarta.

I looked at some of the RMP blank material, but I couldn’t seem to get myself clear on the heat treatment needed.
Who did you send it to ?

This one is going to Peters' Heat Treating.
Or are you talking about that hard edge on the blank?

Love seeing you do your builds - first guns, now knives. What % of this project is done with only hand tools? I notice you didn't use a whole lot of power tools in your other projects.

I was interested in trying to make a knife of my own but was always held back by the fact that I don't have space or the power tools necessary to complete a knife to my liking in my apartment space.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop. I'm eager to see how your project progresses. What tool do you use to establish the initial grind? That's a LOT of material to remove, and the results are looking good.

Nice work! Looks great! We do some forging with a small propane forge and have learned a lot while having some fun. We also bought a portable bandsaw and the table from SWAG. The precision of that setup is amazing and it saves a lot of time. I look forward to seeing how these knives turn out!

Sorry I never updated the thread. I got the knife back form Heat Treat in about 1 week, just haven't been able to get back to working on it since.

Will post again in this thread when I can return to the project.

Sweet! Ever since I started watching Forged in Fire with my 8 year old, I have derams of a garage forge. I guess this may be a logical step to take prior to that?

Can you offer some info on tools, time and cost you use? And you send it off for heat treating? That avoids a whole bunch of dangerous stuff in my garage, although that part all looks really fun.

Anyway, looking good. Can't wait to see the finished product.
