Default Join the California Precision Rifle Club

We have eluded to this a few times, but never officially announced anything until now.
rksimple and myself have been working on starting up a southern california precision rifle club.
The ultimate goal of the club is to get more people involved with organized precision rifle competitions.
We will accomplish this goal by gathering up new precision rifle shooters and assisting/mentoring/training them until such time that they have a firm grasp of the required skills and are ready to shoot matches.
Nor-Cal has over 60 active shooters that often attend their monthly precision rifle matches at Sac Valley Shooting Center.
We are lucky to draw 15 shooters at most So-Cal matches.
The greater LA area certainly has a large enough pool of precision rifle shooters to draw from, but we lack the organization and support to get these people ready to go out to the matches.
That organization is something that the club can help improve by getting like-minded shooters together for practice, training and eventually shooting matches together.

To further the training goal, we have setup a range out on some public land.
The range is about 60 miles north of Santa Clarita on highway 14.
We have setup paper stands from 100yds to 500yds in exact 100yd increments to gather your bullet-drop data for your gun/ammo.
We also have steel from 290yds out to 1000yds available.
This is a great opportunity to stretch your legs out to 1000yds as most public ranges don't have targets past about 600yds.

A view of the targets from the firing line:

Our shoots will be a little different format this year.
Last year, we had a zero and dope gathering session as part of every shoot.
That ends up taking more than half the day so this year we are going to change that up.
We will have three styles of shoots this year.
Course of fire "A" will be precision targets from 35yds to about 300yds with a mix of different positions that get you off the ground and into more non-prone shooting positions. Course of fire "A" requires that the shooter already has a solid zero and knows his dope out to 400yds.
Course of fire "B" will be longer range targets from 475 out to 1000yds, mostly prone. Course of fire "B" requires that the shooter already has a solid zero and knows his dope out to 1000yds.
Course of fire "C" will be our traditional zero and dope gathering session where we will help new shooters get on target all the way out to 1000yds. Course of fire "C" will be open to new shooters without a proper zero or dope as well as anyone else that wants to join us.

New precision rifle shooters are encouraged to join us for course of fire "C", even if your rifle is not ready for prime-time.
We will help you get it dialed-in out to the limits of you and your equipment's abilities.
Watch the CaPRC subforum for future shoot announcements.

We will be shooting on the 4th weekend of every month.
2010 shoot dates:
Saturday, January 23rd Course of Fire "A"
Sunday, February 28th Course of Fire "B"
Saturday, March 27th Course of Fire "C"
Sunday, April 25th Course of Fire "A"
Saturday, May 22nd Course of Fire "B"
Sunday, June 27th Course of Fire "c"
Saturday, July 24th Course of Fire "A"
Sunday, August 22nd Course of Fire "B"
Saturday, September 25th Course of Fire "C"
Sunday, October 24th Course of Fire "A"
Saturday, November 27th Course of Fire "B"
Sunday, December 26th Course of Fire "C"

That pic shows most of the steel targets but I think there is also one at around 850? IIRC.

Randall, a little more notice would have been nice. I've already commited to a weekend of business related debauchery in Palm Springs that weekend.

I think it would be a good idea to not schedule future shoots the same time as a local PBR match is going to be held. Just a suggestion.

60 rounds of ammo? You seriously want to blast off 60 rounds like nothing?

Can we not schedule these things on the same weekends as my bikini wax appointments?

I would like the world to revolve around me as well.

First club shoot?? Wish I had known this was a formal get together a little earlier. I could have made arrangments regarding my match and possibly gotten the day off to join you.

For future reference, we will be having club shoots on the 4th weekend of each month.
We will alternate between saturday and sunday so everyone has a chance to come out.

This is always the challenge.
Some people work on saturdays.
Some people have church on sunday.

You can't please all the people all the time.
That's why we are going to rotate saturday and sunday.
Then the people with only one day available can at least come every other month.

I don't have the gun yet, but I'm definitely interested in starting to attend. Can't make this weekend, but I'm in for the future.

Hrmmm.. Guess this will give me the kick in the pants I need to start that 6.5 Grendel build....

Can we just attend even though we don't have a precision rifle?

Any rifle that you are comfortable with and that's accurate enough to shoot to at least 600yds.

only thing i have is a 14.5" (perm fh) 223 and a 16" M1A, don't think the M1A can do 600yds though.

M1A is a 308 which should be fine out to 600 even with a short barrel.

I can't make it this weekend but I will deffinately come out next month, unless its Saturday the 28th and then I wont make it till May. My roommate is getting married that day.

I had planned a trip to Tehachapi tomorrow morning so I'll be in the area. I might be able to make it out to shoot in the morning. I'll send a PM if I find out I can.
