Exclamation S&W Issues Safety Alert for M&P Shield Aug/2013

just read this today..

S&W Issues Safety Alert for M&P Shield

IMPORTANT CONSUMER SAFETY ALERT and INSPECTION PROCEDURE August 22, 2013

STOP USING YOUR PISTOL IMMEDIATELY UNTIL IT HAS BEEN INSPECTED AND, IF THE CONDITION IS FOUND, REPAIRED

ETA: updated by request, original posting date added to title..
however, as recent as L2C posted, guns may still turn up with this symptom and require attention..
a lot of off roster guns have been snagged up by prospectors prior to the end of SSE1..
these guns may not have been handled or checked until they get PPT'd at a much later date..

Spoken to Rosie this morning at 877-899-6259 (or Rosy don't remember which way she spells it) about sending in Shields for repair work and sending it back to CA.

I asked her if there would be any issues sending the pistol back to CA since it's not on the roster and that CA has a list of pistols approved for sale. She then asked where did I buy the pistol? I answered here in CA and went through all paperwork (DROS) and I'm the legal owner of this pistol. She put me on hold to ask someone and then came back and said it would not be an issue to send the pistol back to me.

If anyone has a similar experience, please post so we can get a consensus on this rather than just one representative.

Thanks.

I sent my shield 40 in for repair and the turn around was fast. Smith and wesson received the pistol on 9/12/13 and just got my pistol today 9/26/13. I also included a pair of heinie night sights and they installed it for free.

Does the recall include the CA version of the shield that's being sold at turners?

I have heard from a salesman at Turner's that the reason they never got all the CA Shields that everybody ordered last year was this recall caused them to fail the drop test and those shipments were recalled.

This would suggest that S&W 'fixed' the problem before shipping the new batch to CA, but I don't have a lot of faith in sales staff stories.

It appears to be a simple test to run, and if you have any concerns, should probably contact S&W directly.

Since the CA Shield is on the roster, you should have no trouble getting warranty work... don't know how S&W is handling SSE purchase warranty issues, though I also have 'heard' that the new manual says you need to send a copy of the bill of sale or DROS with your warranty return.

Just follow the procedure in OP to check the trigger before you DROS - then you'll know for sure.

The recalled pistols were made almost a year ago or earlier. Given the popularity of the Shield, there are few if any pre-recall models sitting on shelves now. Certainly the CA compliant model is fine. And the check takes 3 seconds.

I agree. Mine was purchased off the shelf in cali a month ago and is fine. I already qualified with it and have an appt to add it to my CCW on 7-21-14. Nice!

if you buy one now, is there still a chance it was manufactured before this date? or will all remaining guns in store be checked anyway?

All the current ones should be fine. Dealers were supposed to send all affected units back for repair. I won't say it's impossible to get one that needs the update, but chances are Very low.

Wow.. a necropost that is actually useful to me. I missed this last year. Thanks, I will check mine, more out of curiosity than concern, even though it is a CA model from a few months ago so likely post this issue.

Because you bought a new one, the issue may have already been repaired on yours.

This thread and the problem is 18 months old. It should at least be updated to put the date in the title.

While an old thread, I just had mine checked two weeks ago as I didn't know about the problem. Its an easy fix to a great pistol, having tried several competitors on and off roster models I am still quite happy with my CA version shield. Get your pistol checked, I did and it was good however...why risk it? Especially when its a recall and under the manufacturers cost. Great gun!
