Thoughts on Ruger single six 17hmr
I was interested in this single action for punching paper at 8 - 15 yards. I already have 22lr's for this and thought this would be fun to pick up as long as I can get some good groups from it...

.17 HMR is fun, but pricey, to shoot. Since it is a Ruger Single Six, your grandchildren should be able to hand it down to their grandchildren, as long as you keep it maintained.
Just for fun, Henry makes a lever action in .17 HMR that would look great with a Single Six. https://www.henryusa.com/rifles/leve...rontier-rifle/ |

I have an older Single Six and I love it. Mine dates to 1955 and it shoots great. I learned to shoot with my Dad’s Single Six, so it has a special place in my heart.

Blowing up water bottles and produce is fun. Expensive fun, but still fun.
Trying to see the little itty bitty holes in paper targets, not so much.

If I didn't already have something in a .17HMR, I probably wouldn't be so interested in one myself. I already have a rifle in this round and find it to be a fun round for plinking and varmints. It will cost you more than a .22 to shoot but I'd say go for it!

I love my single six but it's in .22 / .22WMR. Never shot one in .17HMR

My thoughts are that I've always been intrigued by the 17hmr... Probably because it's a fast flat rimfire that looks mean.
I've recently acquired a 617 and I shoot steel at 25 yards and entertain myself shooting at paper at 8 yards at the indoor range. As long as the Ruger is capable of grouping well I don't mind the cost of ammo. I don't mind loading a revolver one round at a time and actually appreciate that it shows things down a little. Good point about the small holes in paper but I shoot at shoot n see targets so not really a problem... I do like that Henry lever that was pointed out although it seems a little sketchy dropping 17's into a tube because they are so pointed...but I guess they aren't center fire ...I really want the 24" frontier in 22lr I just got a Henry small game carbine that I've been meaning to post about... It's in 22lr and I've been shooting it a lot... Trying for ragged hole groupings at 15 yards is quite fun. I anticipate shooting steel at 50 yards will be the same Sent from my moto e5 supra using Tapatalk |

I had to get rid of my single six 17hmr hunter... The piercing muzzle blast was unique to anything I have ever shot in the field unmuffed... Painful... A 22lr-22mag would be a better choice for plinking or target work... 25-50 yards is more of a target range for the 17hmr pistol with a 6.5in barrel...
Cheers... |

Ya my hunter was rare... 17 hmr with a 17 mk2 extra cylinder.. 7.5 in barrel with factory ruger rings included... A very nice collecter on the east coast has it in his collection-showroom now...
17 HMR Hunters do come up on gb pretty regularly,, ck them out ... Cheers... |

I have a chipmunk pistol in 17hmr with a 10” barrel on it .I personally think a Ruger Hunter would be awesome .lead free ammo readily available.a Ruger Hunter should shoot like a Lazer gun.it can put down anything on a ranch

I love 17hmr, and would enjoy the heck out of a single six in one...but ammo is so dang expensive for what it is! I rarely shoot my 17 rifles, as I load 223 for half the cost with better performance.
It's got a place for sure, but...I wish ammo was half the cost. |
