Storing Frames and Preventing Rust?
How do or should a person store steel frames that are not painted yet? Should some oil be slathered on them?
I noticed some light rust on a couple 80% frames. Very light but annoying as its near engraving. The engraving doesn't look deep so not sure how dura coating over it will do and still show the engraving. For now, while being stored in a safe, what should be applied to the steel frame to prevent anymore rust? |

Not an expert but this is how I would approach it.
Cosmoline for long term storage (years). Otherwise wipe frames down with a heavily oiled cloth for short term storage (1-year or less). Check on them once in a while. Use dehumidifies or packs of descant in storage container.

If you are talking about hand gun frames, Spray a generous amount of your favorite gun oil on the frame and put it in a zip lock or any plastic bag. It is not rocket science.
Note that I said gun oil (Hoppe's, Rem oil, etc) not Frog lube or any of the other modern aberrations they sell as gun lubricant these days. |

This^^^^ Still the best stuff around! And the name stands for "rust inhibiting grease" for those that don't aready know, which it does VERY well.

Cosmoline, but I'd suggest removing it from someone else's gun before you put it on yours...a royal biatch to remove and good for decades.
Over the years, the standard has always been RIG Grease. Good hardwood floor wax in the can (Mini-Wax or Tre-Wax) worked fine for me if I had parts I needed to store and work on a week or 2 later...and that was 1 mile line of sight to the Pacific.
