Preppers in LA, is there any panic going on after the 4.4 today?
http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/l...#axzz2wF5RMm8M
I read about the earthquake today (hope everyone is ok) and how some media are saying that it could have been a foreshock. Wondering if any of you have been seeing the unprepared flocking to the stores or anything crazy like that. Lines at the gas stations, etc. Just curious.

This old song started running through my head this morning. Lots of activity at the hardware store this morning, but nothing really happened here at my place besides the early-morning wake-up call.

I've only ever felt one earthquake and it was a tiny one that I didn't even realize was a quake. I guess I didn't consider that people here are so used to them. I figured people would be flocking to the stores with the media trying to scare them with the whole 'foreshock' business.

Not to bad on the subway to work this morning tho it kept slowing down luckily I was in time to work.
At home it was my first earthquake with my son. All I did was cover him if the ceiling fan dropped my wife on the other hand didn't move. My area in North Hollywood is pretty ****ty so there were a ton of activity with the police or fire. |

There was the larger, off-shore Eureka quake last week and now this one. A quick Google search turned up this article: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories...NIA_EARTHQUAKE

After Northridge, no one bothered in so cal to prep.
Cars run out of gas every day around LA People overall count on FEMA to take care of them.. Or someone else.

Business as usual. Didn't even feel it. It does give me a great reason to open up some dialogue with the people I talked about in my post yesterday.

I've tried to talk to my friends at work about it. One in particular seems to be much more open to the idea. He acknowledges that he should but clearly it's not at the top of his list of things to do.

I was in Berkeley for a 4 point something a few years back. I was sitting watching TV in the afternoon. Did not even realize it was a quake, it just felt like a big heavy truck rumbling by out front, more vibration than any kind of serious shaking. We were practically the epicenter too. The Richter scale is logarithmic so a 5 is way bigger than a 4 is to a 3. It's not until you get up in the 6's that you really experience disturbing effects. We have 3's and 4's all the time and they are hardly ever noticed if you are not watching the news.

Yeah, a couple of my co-workers were talking about how the quake reminded them that they need to get a first aid kit, some food, water, etc. So yes, it does remind people that they are not prepared. The one thing the quake reminded me, was that having a BOB in your car does you no good if you run out of the house with your keys still inside... I could have broken a window of the car with a brick if I had to, but I would not have been able to start it and drive anywhere. So it was a good reminder that I probably need a copy of the key hidden in the yard somewhere or something. And if you don't have a BOB in your car, you should. Because if your house got flattened, or caught on fire, in the first moments of a quake, you might not be able to go back inside to get your supplies...

Watching the frame of the open French door lose sync with the back yard during the 5.7 in 2009 in San Diego..
was a real eye opener.

There was an earthquake?
Didn't realize it till the evening news. Slept through it. 6+ I'll feel. I was in Berkeley during the 6.9/7.0 Bay Area quake twenty odd years ago. I remember that one and recall looking for a doorframe and wondering what the heck. Mind didn't register the quake but instinct made me move for cover. |

What about the people that live in apts that were red tagged and have no family to go with? I had a friend that had to do that. He had NO where else to go.

Shelters were set up that first night for those folks. The illegals prefered the parks because they were afraid of sleeping under any buildings even when shelters were available.
That was from their fear and experience with the crappy building codes from their home countries. |

I haven't seen a big rush. If there was I might attribute that to Easter more than anything else. But my sister did breach the subject of preparedness which was pretty surprising. So she, my brother and I had a brief discussion so at least she is open to the subject. We talked about home preparedness and car kits and the reality of walking/getting home - i.e. crazies on the street, blocked highways/freeways. I work much farther than her from home so for me it will be a difficult decision to make and one of last resort of course should it come to that.
I'll see if she wants to hit up SOS or any other preparedness store for supplies other than food or water. My goal is help people prepare without freaking them out.

The one thing I would like to say about earthquakes:
As someone who was right over the Northridge quake, you have very little time to get out of the house, or get to shelter, if that is your plan. Quakes start with a slow, rolling motion. Those are the P waves. Then the S waves come in, and those are much more violent. By the time the S waves hit in Northridge, my place was shaking so badly it was impossible to even walk or move anywhere. So you have a short time of only a few seconds to get someplace safe. So those of you who sit, and wait to see if it's going to be big or not... You are better off looking silly, and running to shelter, even if it turns out to be nothing. For this one, I was able to get all the way from my bedroom out the front door before it stopped. If it was the big one, I would have been right in a good position to run the rest of the way into my front yard, if it started shaking really badly. All I know, is that I laughed off earthquakes most of my life, having been through so many small ones. But once you are in a big one, you will realize that they are nothing to fool around with. |

Yep agree with the above I normally start walking outside if I am not sleeping through one.
I encourage everyone to lookup the triangle of safety when ducking and covering. Hiding under something is a good way to get killed. Hiding beside can be safer. The big one in Mexico school kids hid under desks. And thats where the rescuera foind them crush. The rescuers use the triangle method to gain access to the kids. |

I can't believe the LA city council blamed it on Fracking. Heck there is only 1 frack crew in California and they were and are in Kern County. I am glad to see the folks in here are a little more savvy than to blame some PC like fracking. It is hard to understand how someone can blame something with all the earthquakes we have in California and with the history we have before fracking even started. Glad to be here.
