Yeah, they all took a couple of weeks off (because they can't take vacation during the summer because of all of the CMP matches) so every year the orders pile up and it's slow in the new year. This year in particular they got a ton of orders coming in so when they came back on 1/2 they apparently had thousands of orders waiting for them. Last anybody heard they were still working on the 1/2 orders (they don't sort by postmark, those all went into the same pile).

Ammo and rifle orders end up in different queues, and apparently they do a lot of printing out stacks of orders that get handed to different workers, some of who work faster than others. So the orders only get processed vaguely in order even at the best of times.

Still waiting on any news about the SA SG I mail ordered on the 3rd, but I had someone who was nice enough to pick me up one in person that should be here this week
It's a Winchester Garand.

My packet went out last Monday. Hopefully they'll get to it soon.

I joined the GCA and then found out that GSSF affiliates with the CMP. So if you are a member already or could join up with them. Seems more practical as theres a couple matches to shoot, the chance to win pistols, cash, and gear.

I ordered a service grade and a special grade. We'll see how they turn out!

Kind of an amateurish question but do the Garands only come in 30-06 or do they also come in 308?

Thanks.

They can be barreled in .308 and the CMP sells a .308 version.

The Navy sleeved 30.06 barrels then manufactured barrels in 7.62x51 ,CMP sells these in barreled receivers
As already stated CMP also sells complete Garands with commercial 308/ 7.62 barrels

I don't see any caliber selection for any of the service grade garands. Just this the Special Grade one : RM1308SPECIAL...( + $300 more).

I gather the others only come in 30-06 then?

Unless specified otherwise(the original test models, barrel swaps, chamber inserts, etc.), an m1 garand only comes in .30-06.

Yes just the Special Grade with commercial 308 barrel

Like I said before there are the Navy Garand barreled receivers with inserts and original 308/7.62 barrels

The Navy 7.62 barreled receivers are at the bottom of page and are mail order as well as store purchase. Looks like they still have them
Heres the one I assembled

So do you have to be a gunsmith to put something like this together? What other parts/components do you need to assemble a working rifle? Total cost please.

This is getting complicated and expensive.....

Its not hard to do but if you dont have a working knowledge of the Garand I dont suggest it.
You would be better to buy a complete rifle from CMP that you know will function well and has customer support if there is a issue
Building a Garand is not cheaper than buying a complete rifle unless you have a bunch of spare parts laying around

Word is odds are 3:1 for getting new wood of some sort.

Sorry to hear about the Orange...I requested CMP Walnut personally, hoping either that or USGI. The Orange Birch is really last on my list of wants.

From what I hear the days of orange pumpkin stocks are over. Service Grades ship with either USGI or Commmercial Walnut stocks

Looks pretty much like mine did from last year. I think it's Birch. Doesn't look as bad as I thought it would though. Not bad at all.
