YUGO SKS questions
Good morning, I was just wasting some time before a meeting reading a few posts on SKS rifles on various forums on this site. Other than my newly acquired VZ 52/57 the only other Vintage gun I own is a Yugo SKS. I really don't know much about it "Will post some pics later" but what can you tell me about it? From what I've read as with my schooling on the VZ that matching numbers help. Where and how many serial number are there to look for. I know the SKS's came from alot of different countries. Which are considered the best manufactured and collectible? I know when I first purchased this gun on a quick search I read that the yugo's were produced without chrome lined barrels which I assume probably makes them less desirable. I have no plans on parting with it, just curiosity and would never have thought to see if all the numbers match, prior to the VZ 52/57 comments I would have assumed most guns came the way they were made. One other thing do they take special stripper clips? I ordered 20 SKS stripper clips online that did NOT fit in my gun. They were to wide to fit in the slot. Wasn't sure whether I was shipped the wrong clips or if the yugo model took a different size???? Which would not make much sense but wouldn't be surprised.

YUGO
The YUGO is a very well made SKS, to bad it has a name people connect to a very bad car. My 59/66A1 was overbuilt in every detail. i put it next to my Chinese and compared the quality. i never put them both on a scale but the YUGO is noticeably heaver. no chrome lined barrel should not matter. most of the bad rap is because of the extra parts for the grande launcher. their are no bad SKSs.

Nope, all SKS models accept the same stripper clip type:
You either ordered or received the wrong product.

"The yugo's were produced without chrome lined barrels which I assume probably makes them less desirable". The only problem with this is that barrels may be heavily corroded unless cleaned really well to see actual bore condition.
"From what I've read as with my schooling on the VZ that matching numbers help". Don't know how matching numbers help? collector value? headspacing issues? Most guns don't have serious headspacing issues and tend to be long/oversize chambers that are not a problem with surplus ammo. The only real issue with the 59/66 is the gas cut off/cylinder leaking gas causing cycling issues with lower power surplus, The gas tube fit is sometimes loose and can be fixed by adding a wire ring (one coil cut from large coil spring) in recess groove on gas cylinder takeoff/tube extension. If your a shooter/reloader the 2" extra barrel length give you more velocity for long shots, I handload and shoot 200-500 meter silhouette's with mine using 150 grain speer and hornady bullets. A good bedding and trigger rework will make the 59/66 come alive at longer ranges. |

I got some strippers on line and they were too wide as well. They were new. I took the bolt carrier to a gun show and just went through a bin chock full of them testing until I had bunch I knew fit. I think the guy nicked me for $1 each.
