Sounds like a bad connection inside. Yaesu has alot of problems with internal power supply connections. (bad grounds and solder joints). I really like Yaesu and Kenwood radios myself, but I have a little of all of them. If you decide not to send it off you can bring it by and I would be glad to help you with it. I am in Stockton. |

Poway (north San Diego County) QUOTE] Bob you ever use the repeater in Poway? Lately I have not been able to bring that repeater up. I don't know if someone unplugged it by accident or if it was taken down from lack of use. |

SF bay area, mostly I use 2M SSB, but I use HF when I get a chance and sometimes FM repeaters on 2M and 440 my newest radio is an FT2900 that I put in my car and I usually have it scanning 146.52 and the weather band for alerts. |

Technician - 2M Got my ticket back in 2001. Never bothered to get General although without the Morse, it's probably a snap. I used to belong to RACES and volunteered for several parades. Since moving, I rarely use it. Sold my 440/6M/2M handie talkie and kept my mobile 2M. |

Handheld (aka HT): Yaesu FT-60R + Diamond SRH77CA antenna. Mobile/Base Unit (FM Only): Yaesu FT-7900R (2m/70cm) or the FT-2900 (2m only) if you're on a tight budget. You'll also need either a trunk mounted or magnet mount 2m/70cm antenna.

picked up the VX-8R from HRO this morning. liked the idea of an HT because i'm always on the move. FT-60 is a nice radio, but it's only dual band and the size of a brick.

It's all good. I had no idea what your budget was. The VX-8R is a very nice radio. I have the VX-7R myself.

Because the FCC database is open to the public, with a callsign you can find the person's real name, address, etc. Once you post up your callsign, the anonymity some people enjoy on the internet is suddenly removed. |

Is there a local club in the San Ramon area? I met a number of Races people during drills in the Oakland Hills. I'd like check out ham radios, it could be a great tool have during an emergency.

Technician, newly licensed and still learning how very much I don't know. I live in San Diego County, and have recently joined AARL, PARC and Condor. My original motivation was to have a system of emergency comm with my wife. The hard part is convincing her to get a license.
I have a Yaesu FT60R and VX 6.

Been a ham since 1982, General Class, 13 WPM.
Lots of HF, VHF, UHF and hand held rigs. Very high gain 2 and 70 CM station as well as a nice all band HF antenna. All cars, trucks and boats are 2 meter equiped. Wife is a real tech, not an appliance operator. Since they dumbed down the FCC testing the airwaves have been lets just say a challenge to listen to. This seems the most appropriate thread to add this information, so here it is...
If you want some help to pass the Technician, General, or Extra license, go here and download this FREE software: http://www.n3fjp.com/tests.htm I don't think this app goes into radio theory at all. It just presents all of the possible questions in the pool for each test, so you can see them ahead of time, along with the right answers. It's more of a memorization aid I think. I've downloaded, installed it, and will start using it soon to study for the Tech test. |

Well its like this 'OM
Do you think they need to teach more or less driving skills in order to drive a car?
Should they require more or less training to get a CCW? Why not require more learning to be a good, informed and considerate radio operator? I could go on with more analogies but you get the drift. The same applies to the recent airwaves. de N6_ _ _ |

Try the classifieds on QTH.com or QRZ.com. Then there's always the used/consignment section at Ham Radio Outlet. Whatever you do, DO NOT buy off of EBay.

However, I just want my HAM radio as an emergency, back-up kind of thing. I really don't plan on using it the way you do -- communicating regularly with other hobbyists. Me? I occasionally scan the bands to see who's talking on the local repeaters, or I listen to the sherrif dispatch frequency, and that's about it. At this point I'm not even interested in talking to other HAM enthusiasts like you do. So, for my purposes, I want to get my license the easiest way possible. And for me, that is rote memorization. If I get more into it later and start wanting to access more bands, like you, then I agree, I should probably be required to learn more about RF theory, antennas, electronics, etc. I understand your concern though... you see the the HAM bands turning into what CB has always been -- a bunch of yokels and inbreds. Perhaps to prevent that, the FCC should keep the Tech license fairly easy to get, like it is now, but make the General harder, and the Extra, super hard. (lots of theory, or even add an oral component to the exam, to prevent memorization). |
