Pick up my first rifle tomorrow - advice?
I pick up a CZ 455 with 22LR, 22WMR, and 17HMR barrels tomorrow.
* I'm comfortable with handguns * I've not fired a rifle in around 10 years, and then very rarely; that was a Lee Enfield on military ranges in England when I was a kid in the cadets * I had very ,very limited (< 2 minutes) handling and posture training when getting my hunting license (I'm a non-immigrant resident, needed it to own the handguns or anything else) * the only ranges I'm likely to be able to go to soon are the indoor ranges with 25 yard max range (due to work and some international travel), and presumably limited to the 22LR Obviously, I want to give it a try tomorrow - any advice? So far I've gone over the hunter education + several youtube videos on standing posture and technique. I'll be sad but pay attention if the overwhelming answer is 'get some training before shooting it' |

I'd start out with the .22LR barrel.Make sure it's clear and gun is clean.Go have fun.
Best part of .22s.Still relatively cheap and fun.If you bought a 455 American like mine,no sights.Need scope and rings. Then the fun starts. |

Congrats on your rifle!
Check the rifle at the shop for any major dings and damage! Also insure that the numbers match the paperwork. Before firing, inspect the barrel for any obstructions and do a safety/function check. Have fun, be safe! Robert |

Amazing rifle you got there! I agree to start out with the 22lr as it has no recoil and the ammo is fairly inexpensive if you can find it.
First thing I would do is get as many different brands of ammo you can and see which ammo your rifle likes the best. Even though one can have the same rimfire rifle, they will all fire differently. Depending on the type of shooting, I would work on that shooting form. I personally do target shooting with my CZs, so I use a competition target shooter stance. Details of that can be found here. http://www.thecmp.org/Comm/publicati...ePositions.pdf If your groups are all over the place, check your tension screw. It seems the CZ's like to be a little more on the loose end at about 15lbs/inch tension.

Thanks - that was the plan I've got some Winchester round nose, CCI standard velocity, and Remington Golden Bullet's in my range bag; I'm hoping it takes the winchester round nose as they won't feed in my P226 conversion kit
Thanks for the link too, reading it now! |

Mine seems to like Remington Golden Bullets a lot awkwardly enough. This is my target at 25 yards I just shot a few hours ago. Certainly not my best performance, but this is a pretty average day of shooting for me. I was messing with my stock tension screws and they make quite a bit of difference. My groups tightened up after loosening my screws a bit, just barely over hand tight. CZ 452 Trainer

Damn Oliver, that's one nice stock.
To the OP, I would recommend you pick up some snap caps and get comfortable with the rifle first before you go out shooting. Get comfortable with the your stance, hand placement and such. You can worry about accuracy later. You don't be able to shoot groups like Dattebayo your first time out. |

As stated, clean the barrel & action, perform a function test. Have any questions about it, ask at the range. Congrats, looks nice! Go shoot it, have fun.

Yeah, I believe the combo only comes in the American model. Either way, if I threw a scope on this rifle, I would guarantee my groups would be tighter.

So, my standing shots were basically a 3" radius group which I wasn't happy with at all, so I'm leaving that until I can get some 1:1 help.
I resorted to sitting with a bipod, and got this at 25 yards: (5 rounds per dot) Plan is: * get some hands-on help for standing * improve my breathing and trigger control so I can get tighter and faster at 25 with the bipod (those shots were 5-20 seconds apart) * go to an outdoor range so I can get more than 25 yards |

A 3 inch group, free standing, on your first time shooting the rifle is not too bad in my book. It takes some time to find the perfect place you like to hold the rifle and figure out its natural point of aim in your hands.
Post a photo of yourself in a free stand position and maybe we can offer some advise. If you are shooting it like you would shoot an AR, it would be hard to get tight consistent groups. Then again, I shoot for score and not combat accuracy with .22lr. Those seem like pretty decent groups from a rested position. When practicing, you should practice slow, as the brain develops muscle memory better when actions are conducted slowly. Your speeds will slowly increase on its own the more comfortable you get at shooting with that rifle in that position.
