Ipod Nano 1st Gen Recall
For those of you who still have the 1st Gen Nano, Apple is recalling them due to the battery possibly catching fire.
I am not sure exactly what the will replace it with, hopefully then new 8Gb nano. I will be calling the Apple Store tomorrow to see about bringing it in for the swap.

The article explains what is going on. It has a link to Apple on registering online for replacement for your Nano. |

The news articles made it appear that you could bring it in to the Apple Store for exchange.
I called and they will only "assist" in filling out the info on the website. So, I will wait for my shipping package to arrive and then send it in and wait six weeks to see what the send me to replace my 1st Gen.

Since they clearly state that if you send in a "personalized" nano, you will not recieve a personalized nano as a replacement, it looks like they probably have a stock of refurbished 1st Gen Nanos ready to ship out as replacements.

...and there is a 6-week lag time so they are probably fixing all these Nanos to be redistributed again. Basically, we get a brand new battery.

Nope. I've been waiting a week for the box too.

Apple could just be saying that to prevent a frenzy. If they admitted they would be replacing them with Gen 5 Nanos then Gen 1 Nanos would start selling for $100 on eBay.

/\ I was wondering the same thing. It's a world wide recall and it's hard to imagine they have that many gen 1s laying around. Also, no return box for me yet. Anyone get theirs?

Received my box 4 or 5 days ago. Just tear off the mailing label that has your name on it; a new label addressed to Apple is underneath. Put the iPod in the enclosed plastic bag, place between the two pieces of foam, close, seal and take to a FedEx location (formerly Kinko's.)
We'll see how long it takes, what I receive back. |

Got my padded envelope today! Only 34 days after they said they would send it. My UPS guy said he delivered about ten of the nano recall padded envelopes today including mine. I read on another forum that Apple ran out of boxes for the recall and started using padded envelopes instead.

Any way to report a stolen Gen1 Nano that is part of the recall?
I still have my box with the serial number and I checked to see if it qualified and it did. I'd love to catch the thief that stole it if they try to mail it back to Apple. |

I've read that Apple never gets involved in stuff like that. They don't know if somebody really stole it or if you sold it for crack money or if you gave it as a gift to your wife before a nasty divorce and are now trying to screw with her...

i just got a padded envelope to. strange that apple also says it's not responsible for damage during transit and yet gave me a ****ty method to send it back! strange, my envelope was soaking wet all the way inside. wonder if the ups guy just threw it out to the lawn (or worse did something to it!).

I suggest getting them back in the mail quickly. Another forum I was on stated Apple would not confirm if they have enough Gen 1s to fulfill the recall. It's a world-wide recall, so that's a lotta IPods to provide.

I received my box on the 13th, shipped it back on the 15th. Either it got lost or somebody sat on it until today, but my status link now says product replacement pending (or something like that).
So I guess when they do get going they have a quicker turnaround (knock on wood)... Last edited by Gregchico; 12-20-2011 at 9:06 PM.. |

how'd you get a status link? i didn't get any and all the confirmation screen said was keep that pdf file as reference.
stupid ups got my envelope all wet including the inside. ups store and ups itself (over phone) said they cannot/will not reprint the shipping label even if the tracking # is read-able. just that the bar code was hard to scan. so called apple and the customer support got the shipping dept to email me new tracking labels but now thru fedex ground. i must say and have... apple customer support is really the best around these days. and there ain't no language barrier there too! |

I filled out the online form on November 12th; on December 19th UPS delivered a padded envelope with a prepaid return label. Some of the posts on the Apple forums said that when they called Apple to ask about the delay in getting their return box they were told that Apple expected to exchange about 100,000 Nanos and were surprised when they got over a million service requests. Apple quickly ran out of boxes and had to get more made and eventually also started sending padded mailers.
The original word was that Apple had a stock of refurbished Gen1 Nanos and that is what you would receive as a replacement. Several recent posts have said that they received notification that their replacement had been shipped and that the serial number Apple sent corresponds to a 6th Gen Nano. I haven't seen any posts yet where someone actually received a 6th Gen Nano so time will tell. |

I submitted my request on 18 Nov.
I just received the replacement today. It is an 8GB 6th gen Nano! |

Sorry, I can't remember... I thought I had the receipt on my desk but I don't see it here. I'll post back up if I find it.
I want to say that it took maybe two weeks til I received the box from Apple, but my memory is very hazy on that. Note they sent me an actual box vs a padded envelope, so I guess I was early enough to get a box but late enough to get a more recent Nano! |

It looks like they have streamlined their process. I received my envelope on the 19th, mailed it on the 20th, they received it on the 22nd and my status jumped from service requested to product replacement pending on the night of the 23rd. I will post when I receive my replacement.
