California State Military Reserve
Just returned from my first range assignment.
Our unit was tasked with running the rifle and sidearm ranges so 300+ CA National Guard troops could get qualified. (I was assigned to the M4 range.) We coached those that needed help zeroing - Both with iron sights and CCO's. One story in particular: New troop. Obviously very little time behind the trigger. Not even on paper after the first few mags. Quickly taught the basics of proper position / grip / trigger reset / breathing. On target and zero'd just in time to qualify. We count his hits - 23. He makes the qualification and is grinning bigger than ear to ear. Made me pretty proud of him. He listened and did exactly as he was told - And passed. The next day I was given the same opportunity - Shot "Expert" per US Army guidelines. Not bragging - Just a fact. If you are like me and missed your opportunity to serve due to age - Look into the CSMR. Very rewarding to serve and support - I'm thankful for the numerous opportunities and rewarding experiences... HOOAH !!!

I came across them while at drill in the chow hall.
They have "California" on the uniform where US Army would be. They are completly unpaid, and pony for uniforms. Interesting "branch". They are totally a state resource. They described themselves as being the Reserves for the National Guard, and train to be trainable. While the NG and Reserves train to be deployable. Look into it if you are curious. I never heard of them either. |

I also shot expert in Boot Camp, but soon didn't care so much, as if you shoot expert, and pull security/guard duty, and shoot somebody in the head, you meant to.
If you shoot Marksman, and do the same, claim you were aiming center-mass... |

There is a huge thread in OT about the CSMR. Our job is to train the Guard (both Army and Air) and step in to backfill your in-state roles when you deploy. For example...the CANG is and historically has been lacking in the medical and legal fields. That said, I believe well over half of the legal staff that the state leans on for the Guard, are actually CSMR troops who perform these duties pro bono for your benefit. The majority of the CSMR is troops who served prior and just want to keep giving back, while some like myself missed the opportunity to serve but gained a good amount of life experience that translates well into what we do in the CSMR. It's our way of giving back to those of you who give so much to us.

I did the CSMR for a few years a while back just to see what it was about. Helped qualify a lot of guardsmen and women at Camp Roberts with the M4 and the M9.
Even though we werent aloud to fire any weapons, we still fired the 249 and the M2 .50 cal MG. Fired well over 1000++ rounds, taught us how to change the barrel and head space, and fired some more. This was my first experience with some REAL weapons. I was like dang I gotta join the Army! This is cool ****! Then one day I left the CSMR and my full time job and joined Army Infantry LOL. |

That would be the MEMS Badge (Military Emergency Management Specialist). It is awarded at three separate levels, Basic, Senior, and Master. Soldiers who complete the required training and coursework are qualified to wear the badge on both ACU and dress uniforms.

CSMR DUI's and Branch Insignia
I'm looking for 3-4 CSMR Distinctive Unit Insignia's and 1-2 of the "CA" Branch Insignias that are affixed to the ASU uniform.
I'm willing to beg, barrow, buy, steal, or trade.... Get in touch with me via chris [at] clcpi [dot] com Also, I am a member of the CSMR (new), and recently purchased my ASU. ---> A little shout out to the person that complimented members of the CSMR for serving on their own time and out of their own pockets. THANKS for the compliment! I took your gratitude as a compliment. You see, I too missed my age window to serve. So, now I serve in the CSMR. So far I LOVE IT. Good group of folks. Good mission. Fun times. Honestly, for me, I look at it this way..... I'm not doing it out of my own pocket and on my own time. You have to remember that this country as far back as the Revolutionary War was protected by men that volunteered for military service, often at their own expense, because they believed in a cause or were willing to take a stand. Now, I'm not saying I'm a Minute Man. I would never be so arrogant. I remain humble and in admiration of those patriots! What I'm saying is that the idea, concept, and dedication is relatively the same. The overall theme as I see it is Americans in service of America and the states thereof. If anyone is interested in learning more about the California State Military Reserve, please, by all means, feel free to get in touch with me at chris [at] clcpi [dot] com Hooah!

Standard Army height & weight / PT requirements -
I'm in line for OCS and know quite a few officers who have gone that route - The majority that fail simply can't keep up with the time requirements over the nine months to graduate...

I put my name on the list but haven't seen an invitation to the orientation since August.
EDIT: turns out I had an email issue. The invitations were getting sent out, but I wasn't receiving them.

Recruiter with the CSMR here, will try to answer more than a few of these questions (and CAPO was prior Recruiter for years - so he knows his "stuff").
OCS PT requirements to be initially qualified: Run a mile under 25 minutes, 7 push ups and 25 sit-ups in 2 minutes. You have to hold a BA / BS degree and if already in the SMR - need your CO's permission to attend. If you are joining for the first time, I'll put you in contact with CPT McPeters - she runs the OCS package prep for people in the SMR's Southern Region (basically south of the SG Valley mountain range with a few exceptions). NOTE - Last chance for OCS signups for the 2013-14 class is July 15th - so there is limited time to consider this. It is a comprehensive (hard) program from a volunteer perspective, as everyone from the state travels to Camp San Luis Obispo every other month for 4 days (November to July), and then graduate alongside the CA National Guard OCS officers in a ceremony with the CA TAG! Pretty cool. You can always learn more about the SMR via http://csmrsoldier.com/#&panel1-1 and http://www.calguard.ca.gov/casmr/Pages/default.aspx Post here or PM me with any questions - am glad to help answer them.

Does it usually take that long to have someone from the CSMR to contact a potential recruit?

Dad - the closest unit to good old Oceanside is either the MP unit in Kearny Mesa or Los Alamitos up to the north (whole bunch of units there). We'll soon be standing up a Recruiting team in SDG, perhaps out of a USAFR location nearby MCAS Miramar is what I heard last month (but nothing is finalized yet).
We are also kicking off new Recruiting units at March ARB beginning in October, then Channel Island ANG base (Ventura area), and finally Lancaster to get our friends in the High Desert in on the action. That will be 5 Recruiting teams covering most all of So Cal (sorry about our friends in Blythe and El Centro for now). The CG's goal is to be at 3,000 soldiers and airmen. Griz PS - we've worked hard to suppress the blue skinned moniker. The SMR has been steadily increasing requirements for many aspects of our limited military service, but the CANG's TAG (Commanding General) is a huge supporter of our mission to support the Guard and California - and MG Baldwin doesn't mess around.

Do the CSMR folks get regular access to military posts and commissary/PX-BX and MWR (i.e. golf course) access?
Is the rank structure mutually observed between CSMR and ARNG, USAR components? Does a NG E-5 stand at parade rest when addressing a CSMR E-7? Are CSMR officers saluted by enlisted NG soldiers? I am just curious because when I was in the Army reserve and then mobilized on active duty I never saw any CSMR guys or knew where they were on the military food chain. Only if activated. Otherwise it's 100% all volunteer.

We get a $125/yr uniform stipend if we don't miss any drills, and if we are put on paid SAD orders. There are both paid and unpaid SAD orders. I've been ordered to SAD numerous times and have not been on paid orders. We don't do it for the money. It costs me thousands of dollars to serve with the CSMR but it's for a cause greater than myself so I'm fine with it.

Beyond the selfless service, there's lots of direct and indirect benefits (beyond salary) for SMR soldiers and airmen. Access to more training than you can possibly take, via online (AKO), CANG educational benefits, DHS terrorism course, EMT, LEO, HUMVEE, weapons, administrative, etc. There's the comfort of being in uniform (or back in uniform despite the different shade of green), knowing that you are part of a solution to the State's problem of training for the NG, and preparing for our next natural or man-made disaster. And you get to serve with a pretty awesome bunch of people who dedicate several hundred to several thousand hours per year!
I'd joke and say I'd pay to participate in just such an opportunity, but I already do, and I enjoy every dollar's worth. As for ranks - if you were prior service - you bring that with. It's fun to educate other federal or NG troops on our mission. Failing that, mentioning my previous job, or the TAG and their COL's unqualified support of our mission to assist the Guard typically does the trick.

While I'm not the Unit's Medical Officer, I can tell you that many controllable forms of medical issues are not a disqualifying factor. I would say turn in the questionnaire, and mention that you have controllable Type X, and PM me your name so I can tell the First Sergeant about your form, and have it sent to MAJ Evans for a quick prelim review. Sound fair?
