Default Beginner to a Ruger 10/22

So, I just bought a Ruger 10/22 for me and my son, wood stock, I liked the classic look.

I ordered a few extra Mags. Doing to poking around I'm reading that a few good starter mods are the Volquartsen Automatic Bolt Release, and the Volquarsten Bolt Tune-Up Kit for Ruger 10/22.

Any recommendations other than those?

Just do the auto bolt release and a delrin bolt buffer, save the rest of your funds for ammo. Just get out there and shoot it with him, later you can mod it out.

My plan is to take it out with him before any mods, When I do mods. I like to feel/see a difference.

I suggest you take it out shooting in stock form and begin the loathing of the factory bolt release. You can buy a Volquartzen release or do the 2 minute job yourself with a small file. Its super easy, I've done it myself and for other people, its my only mod on my 10/22's.

Besides the auto bolt release I think it's g2g as is. Spending 50 or more for a trigger on a 200 dollar gun seems silly to me.

I second the buffer pin upgrade. Did the bolt release myself with a Dremel, it's not hard to do.

Go out and shoot it, you might like the way it shoots and not need any upgrades or decide to do others.

The Ruger 10-22s are fine guns right off the shelf. Get out and shoot them a bunch to get their feel, that way you can tell if there are benefits to the mods you may install later.

Having a few extra mags is nice...I like the clear ones from Ruger.

Buy a range of ammo types and see what groups the best.

I have one that's been heavily but relatively inexpensively modified. My two favorite upgrades are an ER Shaw bull barrel and the BX trigger. I wouldn't pay $80 or $90 for the trigger but there are a lot of sales right now so you should be able to find one for $45-50.

After all the upgrades, I'm left needing one that's completely stock again. Also, Turner's has ammo for under $.03/round right now (Federal Black Box). It might be a good time to pick up a couple cases if you haven't already. Enjoy the time with your son!

Do the bolt release mod on your part for free and install a Volquartson extractor and your 10/22 will run fine forever.

Great gun off the shelf. Never felt the need or want for an auto bolt release. Although I have a ton of upgrades, I felt the biggest difference with the kidd viton bolt buffer and the stainless guide rod and charging handle. Both are cheap parts. The bolt buffer had a drastic impact on the audible note of the recoil. I shoot alone, not at a range so its something I really appreciate. The stainless guide rod took the grit out of the charging action. The great thing about the 10/22 is most upgrades are pretty cheap. The bx trigger is nice but I didn't really mind the stock trigger. The x22 is also a great upgrade just because it looks really cool

My 2¢ : Leave it alone until you are both familiar with it. I don't know how old your son is, but the auto bolt release is not the safest thing for a young beginner simply because it can release the bolt when the stock is jarred.

I shoot it as is and find nothing wrong with it , the extractor is good , trigger not bad at all . I'm planning use it for hunting .If I was going to use it in range only then I would do mods.

As said, shoot it, get used to it, then start on a fun journey. You can upgrade it for relatively cheap if you look around and wait. Before I started messing with my last one (#5), I bought a stock from cwp on clearance for$20, and floated the barrel, no band, no bedding, huge improvement in accuracy. The BX trigger is great for the low price, or just change the hammer, huge difference. I be done all of mine with inexpensive mods and couldn't be happier. They are my go to guns for squirrels out to about 125 yards, maybe a little more if lucky. Enjoy it, shoot it. CCI mini mags and cheap aguilla shoot well. CCI SV shoots great. Have fun, pm me if you want more info on easy, inexpensive upgrades

Good choice on a starter gun. Before you know it, you’ll have two. Great guns right out of the box, but I put the Volquartsen bolt release on mine and my grandkids rifles, as well as my son’s and daughter in law’s rifles. Yes, there are 7 in my safes. My 10/22 goes on every range trip that involves rifles. The other rifles have to take turns going out.

First shot at adding a pic, this was last week, 10 shots, 50 yd, CCI MMHP. Total investment in gun is sub 400, probably closer to 350, including purchase of the gun. Start playing with the 10/22, very addictive

The one upgrade I do on all my 10/22s is the volquartsen extended mag release. The stock flush version drives me nuts. Having said that though, I usually end up changing out the trigger/trigger group and barrel as well, but not until I’ve shot it a few times. Other items such as stocks or internals might come later too.

Mine always jammed with a lot of ammo until I put a Kidd barrel on it. I’m still debating buying an entire Kidd bolt, seems like a better value than upgrading parts of the factory one like the extractor and firing pin.

Upgrading the buffer makes a notable difference in noise as already mentioned. Even if I’m not beating the bolt up less I feel like I am.

The BX trigger seems like the best value, but the Kidd trigger job kit is hard to beat.

- Tech-Sights aperture sights.
- Cut/square the stock down to 13" Length of Pull (LoP), including a 1/2" hard rubber grind-to-fit recoil pad.

- Get a set of Tech Sights(for less than 50 yards, I like iron sights even with my bifocals).

- Take your son, and the rifle, to an Appleseed

The factory sight are mediocre. Tech Sight(or similar) make a nice iron sight setup.

10/22 is mediocre off the shelf. Other rifles, new and old out-shoot it out of the box.

The nice thing about the 10/22 is it is easy to mod. So it will shot as good as other rifles that shoot good out of the box.

I have one set up for Appleseed. Tech sights, mag release, trigger, sling, bolt release. My Dad's old Mossberg 142 bolt action that he got for Christmas in 1950 will outshoot the 10/22 all day long.

I picked this up for $99 at a pawn shop. It's a 1970 model in new condition. It's too bad it didn't have the original stock. I added the Nodak sights that co witness the red dot. I also added an extractor, buffer and the larger charging handle. Trigger was sent out to Brimstone.

Thumbs down

Shoot it as is and when you get tempted to mod it out just sell it and buy a AMT Team Challenge gun.
