Default S&W M&P 15-22 Sport

Shot the M&P 15-22 over the weekend. Looks like this rifle has gone through several upgrades and at least one recall. Would it be best to just buy new and avoid the history/evolution?

If you're determined to buy one of those I agree with your thoughts of buying a new one. I forget which national firearms training organization was using them for their programs when they ran into some type of malfunctions, that I believe led to the recall and updates.

Just like a lot of things designed sometimes it takes the customers using them the first few years to find issues with the original design.

Personally I would go with a Ruger 10/22 because it is long since proven a reliable design with so many upgrades and aftermarket products available in boggles the mind.

Unless of course you're training your brain to work with a AR-15 and then as suggested above you might be better just dedicated 22 long rifle AR upper.

What upgrades and recall did it go through?
I'm in the market for it also.

Here is a link to Smith & Wesson about the M&P 15-22:
https://www.smith-wesson.com/mp15-22...r-safety-alert

I contacted them and they sent me a gauge to check for proper bolt clearance.
Mine was OK, as most are but a good idea to check it.

Cool, thanks for the link to the recall. Looks easy. I don't see any risk in buying a used one. Just send for the bolt checking tool.

Just an FYI, they are currently banned from Appleseed events for safety reasons.

I bought a complete M&P15-22 with 2 mags for $249.
I could not build one that cheap on regular AR receivers.

Thanks Rizzo! First time I've heard of this issue; just contacted them for the free gauge. I suspect mine is ok, but it's better safe than sorry.

Op, I've never had any issues with my old 15-22. It's a Magpul MOE edition, IIRC I purchased it new from Turners back in 2010. Back then the MOE version was one of the first models that came with a threaded barrel and birdcage flash hider. I've only shot bulk Federal and Winchester most of which have been amazingly trouble free.

Do you have a pair of dial calipers or a micrometer?
If so, how thick is the gauge?

My guess is 0.043".

Yes, I have both.
I will try and find it, measure it and post back.

Well, I found it!
<sigh> I have too much STUFF!!
I finally found it in a place that I put " temporarily" until storing it - on my workbench under a bunch of more "stuff". (grin)

Anyway, I mic'd it at .0355" and then used my digital caliper and it measured at .0350" thick.
Here is a pic of what I received from Smith & Wesson:
M&P 15-22 gauge.jpg

The gauge itself is made of plastic.
Hope that helped

Thanks!
Now I can check my bolt without having to ask S&W for a little piece of plastic.

And the workbench struggle is real...
