Default Watch for snakes Barstow area (redo pics)

If you are planning on going shooting out in the desert watch where you walk. I just got these pics in an email at work. These pics were taking about a week ago outside of Barstow. Mark

Yes, yes, I know, God's creatures, part of nature, leave them alone and they will leave you alone...I got it.

However, it does makes you think about your favorite shotgun, a case of 12g low-dram 1oz #8s and a cylinder bore barrel, doesn't it?

These pictures had been circulated around for a while now so I doubt the particulars of these photo's origin.
Here is the same pictures but in Rosamond, CA.

Settle down guys, its that time of year. We had late cool weather that delayed their coming out of hibernation a little. That hole in the pic is evidently a den. That pics though pretty well proves that Greens and Pacifics do den together which would explain the dual venon in some of them. As soon as the weather gets scorching during the day they'll revert to their nocturnal habits. Right now though do be careful as a) they're hungry; and b) they're horney and very territorial.

I'm calling shennanigans on these photos. Just Google for "rattlesnake den photos" and you'll see the same photos posted for at least 3 years.

Eeeeh...old pics...
If it makes people remember to be careful that is OK.
I have seen a den like this out in the dez years ago.
I don't doubt they are still out there.

Well it seems those snakes been traveling. They have been spotted in a least 4 states As for a true story this spring I was out by Mojave working. I stopped to relieve myself on a bush. I happened to look over my shoulder to see a 3 foot rattlesnake headed right for me about 5 feet away. I had to move pretty quick or he would of went right between my legs. Mark

every years about this time these same exact pics show up with a different location, these exact pics have been posted here before and all the same comments were made as in this thread, last time it wasn't barstow though but it was CA. you would hear this long before you ever got close enough to see it as the snakes are breeding. these snake don't harm people and it does zero good to kill them because your afraid of snakes, now if there was one under your porch and it was threatening your animals or kids different story but what is being shown is out in the middle of nowhere and not harmful to anyone.

Eek. I might be shooting up in that area this weekend. Even if those photos aren't unique, if there are dens like that out there i definitely don't want to be caught unprepared. i'm guessing leather boots laced tight and jeans tucked in at the bottom, right? Or would cowboy boots with the jeans open at the bottom as usual be OK as well? (Definitely a lot more comfortable & not so mall-ninja)

Had the same thing happen weekend before last at the range - relieving myself and felt that something or someone was watching me. Turned around to see about a head and about 1.5 feet of what turned out to be a 4 foot coachwhip sticking up out of an old burrow a couple of feet away giving me the eye.

Regular boots (cowboy, lace up or otherwise) will not reliably stop an adult strike (and no help at all if you get a high striker); that would require snake boots. You probably pass by more rattlers in the desert than you even realize. As always in snake country watch where you step, never put your foot or your hands where you can't see and avoid walking next to or through brush where you can't see the ground, especially in the heat of the day.

As a note I have a pair of Rocky snake boots that I wear this time of year at the range when I'm cutting back brush. I know from experience they will protect me, but I still get nervous.
