Great Grandfathers 1911
I had the 1911 out of the safe to take some pictures, so I thought I'd post them while I was at it.....
My great grandfather, Harvey Edward Overesch started his Navy career in WW1, and ending after WW2 as a Vice Admiral. He spent time in China(where he received this pistol) between the wars, as Naval Attache in Shanghai and commanded the USS Cuyama. Later he went on the be Commandant of Midshipman at Annapolis from '42-'43. He commanded the USS San Francisco in '44-'45. At that time, the San Francisco was in battles at Kwajalein, Marianas and Gilbert/Marshall islands actions. After the war he worked in Tokyo doing some CIA stuff, then at the US Embassy in London.

I forgot to mention.....this 1911 and this Borchardt were in an old ammo can. They spent approx. 50 years near the beach back home in Hawaii. I found the can cleaning out an old shed. Picked up the can and the bottom fell out. Both pistols are in the same condition as they fell out on my foot.....my grandfather brought the Borchardt back from Belgium/France in '44.

thank you for sharing, that was a TREAT. the gun is in great condition. Normally I'm not a fan of engravings/modifications to guns (because of my collector mindset), but I make an exception for that one. I'd happily trade any of my collector guns for one with historical family significance.
thanks again for a peek into your family heirlooms! |

Enjoyed your post! I read a bit about your g-grandfather on wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_Overesch It's probable or possible that your g-grandfather and my grandfather (USNavy 1922-1946) knew each other. They both officers were serving in Shanghai China when the Japanese invasion occurred in 1937. At that time, my grandfather was a captain in the submarine service, and served on the U.S.S. Tarpon (SS-175). Your 1911 is an awesome treasure. Don't shoot it! |

Last time I looked at that page, it didn't have much info! Looks like someone has been working on it!
Interesting! I didn't know there were US subs there at that time. I bet since my great grandfather was naval attaché, having contact with lots of other officers, it is most certainly likely the met at some point!!! I have some interesting pictures he took while there....as well as a couple of his swords that recently came back into family possession.....

An heirloom like that 1911 is beyond a dollar value and should be a treasure for generations to come. I'm sure your Great Grandfather would be pleased to know that very little about the 1911 design has changed since his day and people everywhere still depend on them every day.

I am so jealous.... some guys. I am no expert on your Borchardt but I believe they were the precursers to the Luger P08. Others might want to edumamcate the unlearned masses here. Complicated but darn cool.... hey next time you go rummaging around in garages and such can I just tag along and maybe some luck will rub off. Great pistols with a history.
Let me be the first to ask, would like to sell one of Borchardts? pm me if you're even toying with the idea. Thanks for sharing Last edited by Charlie50; 03-20-2013 at 1:40 PM.. |

Seems a shame to hide it in a safe, too bad we can't display these things in our living rooms without fear of someone stealing it! |

I would think that if inspected closely, cleaned and with good ammo that wonderful 1911 would perform without a problem. True, it would be a shame to do any damage and certainly not wise to pound round after round through it but I'd shoot it. I own several Winchesters that were my great great grandfathers and my sons and I have experienced what he felt. He fed the family and protected the ranch and we treasure those rifles. Your 1911 is truly a treasure as well, it doesn't really matter if ever shot again. Thanks for sharing it with us.

It's a tool, look at it like this "you don't shoot it, and it just sits in the safe" "you do shoot it and it breaks, then it just sits in the safe" (I doubt this would happen, and if you are worried about it have a gun smith look it over) ether way sounds like you will never sell it (or I would hope not) so ...... I just bought an M1 Garand from the CMP. I would spend thousands ++ $$ for another one if I knew and could get the one my grandfather carried in WWII, and even if I did get the one he carried, damn straight I would shoot it, but it would not be a range toy. edit to add, I don't think I would shoot the Borchardt, just because I would not trust any ammo that I could find, but the 1911 should be good to go with any ball ammo.
