Some years back, early 90's I was walking along the sunny side of a ridge finger above the Mokelumne River middle fork in Calaveras County when I walked thru a thicket and sensed that I was being watched and it was more than a slight sensation. After walking along about 50 ft I saw 4 chewed off fawn legs on a tree stump and it was obvious what I had walked into, a cat's ambush zone. I dropped down to the road below on the left and after a few yards I saw a large dog walking fast up ahead of me and the " dog " trurned hard left and dropped into the canyon about a hundred ft ahead of me. But,
The " dog " had a 4 ft long tail ! My brother in law killed her a few years later while she was stalking him. Spooky.

About 20 years ago in college. I took a geology summer course where we went camping for one week throughout OR and N. CA. We were somewhere near the border at some camp ground with a nice creek running through it. We all went in to take a dip and take a break from the heat. I noticed a fish near a bottom of deep pool. I was about waist deep when that sucker fish swam up to me , softly it touched my waist. I picked him and showed the fish to others while they stood in amazement. I put it back in the water and tried to make my way out while the fish followed me. I sat on the sandy beach and the fish beached itself in between my legs. I picked it up once more and made some wishes and put it back in the water and watched it swim off.
10 years back sitting in the back yard watching the sunset with the wife and mother in law. I noticed a bright white dot in the distance closing in fast. I told them to look at that fast plane. We all watched as thing got closer, as it got higher and faster. I’ve seen plenty of jets/planes and this was too FAST. We were looking straight up when the thing vanished in the atmosphere. I don’t know if it was military, but it will always be a UFO to me.
Living near Palm springs CA, my buddy and I got bored so we went off into the desert with our 10/22s to shoot whatever we could find. Rabbits, coyotes, snakes, lizzards or whatever. We were out in some remote places and just wandered around into some canyons. Few times we found shoes out there (miles out in the desert). We always said if we kick it and the shoe doesn’t go flying, we’ll just keep on walking like nothing happened. Also there were trails with rocks/boulders out lining them like curbs, leading to a fire pit full of bones. I don’t know if it was hobos or some satanic stuff.
When I got back into hunting about 10 years back. We were elk hunting Oregon elk. Everyone went to camp while I sat back and just overlooked a nice opening/clearing. All of the sudden I hear a cougar screaming, not a snarl, but like fighting. I’m sitting there frozen, listening.. Then I thought I heard a scream for help.
I jumped up and ran towards the cougar, jumping logs, brush, you name it. I got good 50 yards and the woods went silent. No movement no nothing. I though I’d see something by now. I slowly backed off not turning my back. After getting good distance I hoofed it to camp just to find out it’s a cougar in heat. I really wish I would have kept my cool as I had a cougar tag.
Couple years later hunting not too far from there. I'm on top of a bute leaning a tree over looking a bowl below me. After about half an hour I decide to move to another tree but only maybe 20 yards to get a different point of view. Sat down and got comfy, and not 60 seconds later I see a movement to my left out of peripheral vision. I slowly turn my head and there is black bear standing next to the tree I was just sitting at. I didn't have a bear tag (go figure). I still raise my gun and put center mass and told my self if he turns right he's going to get 180 grains of 30-06. He just stood there on his hind legs sniffing the air, got down on his 4 and went down into the bowl.
I'd say about 4 years ago, my buddy, my oldest daughter and I were elk hunting. Walked down maybe mile on closed logging road. We pulled out the map as we were going to split up and meet down at the main road bellow. Standing there we hear something strange and getting closer, next thing we know, the trees started swaying (it was calm morning) and a slow deep hum pulsating through us. Whooomp whooomp whooomp... What ever it is, it stopped and feels like it is hovering over us. We are just standing there looking at each other, up and around, nothing around us, just high clouds. I'm tearing up, thinking we are about to get abducted. Not more than 10 seconds later the Ufo or what ever it was slowly leave and all is calm like nothing happened.

Last summer, we were camping not far from where I go hunting. We set up camp and I take the family to one of my favorite little lakes. We are there fishing on the dock and I hear a cougar in heat going off up the bute next to the lake (not far from bear story) I knew what it was and told the wife we need to make sure we keep an eye for the little ones and I told the the other families what that noise was. But I Don't think it registered. As the day went on, I saw a plume of smoke come up and kept getting bigger, so I went to tell the camp host but he took off for a couple of days. Before we knew it, there was a chopper filling up its water bag at the lake and then the tankers started coming. There was an OHV park maybe 20/25 minutes away and there is a ranger station there. Since it was going to be dark soon, full days of fishing, free showers at teh OHV and Ranger, we decided to head up and see what the deal is with the fire. We were out of the camp for less than a 1/3 mile and I came around a bend to see a brown animal laying down in the middle of the road. I was slowly coming to a stop at 50 yards from it and leaning over my steering wheel trying to figure out if it' a dead deer or what. It stood up and all I saw what its long tail. Slammed the truck in park and grabbed my glock 43 out of the door console just to only see his tail disappear into the brush when I drew my 9. It was thick brush and getting dark and I wasn't about to go in by my self in there. I think he just got done busting a nut and was getting some R&R when I came around the bend.

A couple of years ago a buddy and I went tent camping on the east side of the Carrizo Plains. We spent the day doing some target shooting, off roading in my old 4Runner and his Ranger, and looking for coyotes to shoot with our AR's. We were both carrying 45's on our hips too.

After the sun went down we formed our trucks into a "V" and put our tents next to each other in between them. We usually did this to form a barrier from the wind, and potentially protect ourselves should someone cap off a few rounds without paying attention to their surroundings. We had a few beers, told some stories around the fire and listened to music until we finally headed to our tents for the night.

At about 0230 we were both awoken to heavy breathing and something moving against and in between our tents. My first thought was that it was a coyote but then I heard a second "something" making the same noises a little closer to my buddy's tent. We both yelled at each other and asked "WTF is that?" as it went on for a couple of minutes. I was concerned because I would not have a good back stop or angle to fire a shot through the tent as my buddy would be in my line of fire, and I in his.

The noises eventually stopped and I fell asleep again. The next morning we got out of our tents to find numerous tracks from what appeared to be at least two feral pigs, all over our camp site. Seems the pigs ate our left overs from dinner the night before and came rooting around our tents looking for more.

We've camped out there a few other times and have been awoken to two legged creatures driving up near our campsite in the middle of the night. I've never contacted these people but I've kept a close eye on them until they left. Always creeped me out. Seems it's hard to find a spot that's truly off the grid and away from civilization. Strangers in the night miles away from the rest of the world creep me out more than any animal ever would.

About 20 years ago, I was in the Florida Keys spending 3 weeks fishing from Key Largo to Key West. In addition to my travel rods and reels, I brought my portable Hawaiian sling with me.

While out fly fishing the patch reefs one hot August day, I noticed that the boat I was on had masks/snorkels/and fins on-board. The guide let me snorkel a bit to cool off that day, and I saw some huge Hogfish and tasty snappers. so naturally, I brought my Hawaiian sling with me the next day.

After a nice morning of fishing, the guide went to an area of patch reef right on the edge of a turtle grass grove and told me that it was a great spot to spearfish. I shot a couple nice hogfish that I returned to the boat. Then I started seeing lobsters, and guess what; it was lobster season and the boat captain had a lobster permit!

After bringing 2 nice bugs to the boat, I went out for one final hunt. I spotted a big boy sticking halfway out at the bottom of a wedge between two rocks in about 12 feet of water. I went down 4 times to try to get that sucker out of the rocks, but every time I dove, he would pop back into his cave. So I went down to his layer and hovered on the bottom for what seemed like forever waiting for him to come out so I could grab him.

In that long minute, I swear I could hear an odd rhythmic beat under the water. The hair on the back of my neck was standing up and I felt very uncomfortable. When I went to the surface to get a breath, I could hear the guide frantically yelling at me. When I stuck my head out of the water, he was slapping the hull of the boat yelling SWIM BACK NOW!!!! (that slapping of the hull was probably the "rhythmic beat" I heard underwater)

I swam back to the boat, and when I reached the small ladder he placed over the rail he said "don't panic, but you need to get the hell out of the water right now; there is a huge shark all over you"! I didn't even take my fins off, I put a foot in the first rung of that ladder and flopped my body into that little boat. Once in the boat I looked in the water and saw a big tiger shark circling.

Now, I have swam with sharks many times, even bull sharks a couple times, but I always knew they were there and never lost eye contact. I never saw this tiger shark, even through the guide said he was swimming right over me on my last dip to the bottom and she followed me back to the boat. Not even knowing she was there is what really freaked me out in the aftermath.

Mrs Tiger was obviously attracted to the area because I had been spearing fish. I'm not saying that this shark was a threat or that she would have attacked me, but it really freaked me out because I never saw her. It took lots of rum to calm my nerves that night.

The strangest thing I’ve ever had happen occurred when I was a kid and my parents took me dirt bike riding along with my aunt, uncle, and cousins somewhere along US-395 by Red Mountain. We were staying in a trailer while my aunt, uncle and cousins were in a truck bed camper.

One night we were all asleep when someone started banging on the trailer door. My dad yelled who is it and the guy responded, “I crashed my motorcycle in the hills and am trying to walk back to camp. I’m not hurt but my bike wouldn’t start. Can I have some water?”

My dad told him “back up about 10 feet and I’ll throw some to you,” then made sure to cock his .357 revolver into single action right next to the door. I’m sure the guy heard it.

When my dad saw him through the window, he threw the water out and relocked the door. The guy yelled thanks and headed down the trail back towards the highway. Not wanting to leave us out in the desert alone, and being this was before cell phones were common, that was about the most my dad was willing to do.

The next morning, my dad woke up extra early, woke my uncle up, and followed the guy’s tracks just in case. They wanted to find him before any of the kids did. They said they followed the tracks for a couple miles towards the highway, then they just disappeared. They couldn’t figure out if he got picked up or not.

The weirdest part was we didn’t see any other dirt bikers the whole time we were out there and hadn’t passed any other camps on the way to ours.

Did you ever have the pleasure of meeting a local character in the region.

Known as "Virgil Steam Man".

He was a WWII vet with one leg, who lived on top of a geothermal steam spring. In a canyon east of 395, off of Trona Rd. a couple of miles No of Red Mountain?

I’ve had a few unsettling experiences. Had the steamy grizzly poop on the trail, we could hear it and smell it in the brush right next to the trail. Had the, stalked by a cougar on Vancouver island experience, they are aggressive up there. Those were heeebie jerrbied for sure. But I had two experiences on the same trip that were winners in the unsettling category. We took a 3 week camping trip up the Dempster Highway all the way to Tuktoyaktuk a small village on the edge of the Arctic Ocean. It can rain for days at a time up there so at some of the campgrounds they have community kitchens, roofed structures with screened in walls to protect you from the bird sized mosquitos and other flying predators.

So it’s raining heavy and we stop at a kitchen to cook up a lunch. Inside are two women about 30 years old, with what looks like CSI evidence bags, laptops, cameras, notebooks and glass jars of bugs and plants. To find out, they were scientist documenting their specimens for a study of the melting permafrost. A couple minutes behind us a pick up with camper pulls into the area. He cruises the campsite then parks where he can’t be seen from the shelter but near the two woman’s vehicle. About 10 minutes since our arrival has passed and we have just fire up the camp stove. The two women mention they needed to retrieve something from their car. Keep in mind, this is just north of the arctic circle in a seriously remote area. Myself, my wife, two children, two scientist and an unknown truck driver are probably the only people within 100 miles any direction. It’s raining and raining and raining, the truck driver doesn’t come in from his truck, this struck me as very odd. We take our time warm up cook lunch eat, relax look at maps. By now the two women are gone close to an hour. Their laptops, cameras and research project left alone all that time. I get the heeeeebie jeeebies, this isn’t right, these women were supposed to just race to their car and come right back. No way these scientist would leave all that work and electronics unattended. It rains up there, the kind of rain that turns a campground into 6 inches of mud. I told my wife let’s hang around a little while, somethings up with the women. Another half hour goes by, non stop rain, no women, mysterious truck driver still unseen. What to do? I have my family to worry about, I can’t go looking in the truck if there was foul play. I have no gun. So we decide to casually pack up and head up the road without attracting any attention. Then all of a sudden the truck rapidly pulls up right in front of the only exit to the structure, nearly blocking exit. The mysterious driver enters, he walks straight directly at me. I have worked in locked psych units and I know severe psych problems when I see them. This guy was trouble, serious trouble. He doesn’t start with the usual polite introductions. He invaded my personal space and starts interrogating me about the two vanished women. Where did they go? Who are they? Are you camping with them? Who are you? Where are you going? Significantly odd. He turns around, gets in his truck, drives off into the mud and rain.

My heebie jeeeebie alarm screamed. We drove around the campground in the torrents of rain and mud looking for the vanished women. No one anywhere in sight just the women’s empty vehicle, they had vanished. They left, car electronics and research on the table in the shelter.

Not that I remember. My parents were pretty vigilant with making sure we stayed on the marked trails towards the highway because they were worried we’d ride into an open vertical mine shaft. Little did they know that as a stupid adult, I purposely try to find mining sites when we are out shooting in the desert

The only other out of the ordinary things I remember as it was over 20 years ago was finding a train full of old tanks on the tracks leading toward China Lake NAS. I think they were decommissioned and going to be used as targets on the bombing range. That was really cool to get to climb all over them as a kid.

The other was after my dad had converted my mom’s quad to a twist throttle from a thumb throttle. Wouldn’t you know it, it stuck as my mom was heading down a hill towards train tracks. My mom caught air and jumped the tracks. Thankfully she landed it and it stalled when it hit, but it was awesome to see. Needless to say, she never rode it again.

Once camping I woke up hearing the sound of straight up screaming. Not yelling. Screaming at the top of someone’s lungs. It lasted about 5 full seconds. I didn’t sleep a wink the rest of the night.

2002-2003 I was hunting elk with my brother near the UT/WY border. Camp was in pinions and junipers. It was a maze where you couldn’t see more then 25’-50’ in any direction. This was big country with heavy forest 1 mile higher. I was always armed in camp and ready. In camp late that evening I was talking to my brother about Jesus Christ and the great plan of happiness(we never talk about that stuff). As we’re standing facing each other, my brother looked behind me over my shoulder. His face changed to the most horrific expression I have ever seen on any face in my life. I get my hand on my sidearm as I’m turning to see what is behind me.
Swoosh, a white glowing figure the size of a large bodied person, no head no legs but the body at the same height and size of me and my brother. It fly’s from behind me moving fast about 3’ away from my right shoulder. It fly’s past my brother and behind a pinion tree just 30’ away. As soon as it gets behind the pinion tree a large animal the size and sounds of an elk takes off running from behind the pinion tree and runs away. The beating hoofs fade as it quickly moves towards the heavy forest above.
This really happened. I spent the next couple hours in the truck listening to church music until I felt more peaceful AKA stoped being scared to death.

I’ve seen lots of owls fly by in the night.
This was an unholy glowing figure that I got a perfect close up view of.
It must of been standing or still behind me as my brother stared in horror, then started to move as I turned to look.
It moved more at the speed of a person running not the speed of an owl flying.

Pulled over to nap once on the way back from SF, parked on the edge of a gas station parking lot off of 99, lock the doors, and knock out.

Wake up a bit later to find one big rig nosed up to me, and another parked alongside blocking the view to the store, and the drivers are out standing by the front of my truck, whispering and glancing my direction.

I started up and backed over the curb real fast to get the hell out of there. Not sure what the hell was going on.

You were about to meet two new intimate friends. Did you hear banjo music?

I’ve had 1 creepy & 2 scary situations. At 10, my brother, some friends, and I found a dead naked woman, while hiking with our dad’s. We never saw anyone else in the area that weekend. 2 of our dad’s hiked back to camp, drove to the nearest pay phone and called the sheriff (before cell phones & 911). The rest of us stayed near the body & covered her with our t-shirts. While living in OR, I was stalked by a lion while fly fishing. I just stayed in the river on the far side until it left. While 4-wheeling with some friends, one of my rear leaf packs separated and I had to walk back up the trail a couple hundred yards to find my parts. Shortly after finding my short leaf, I heard very heavy foot steps right over my shoulder. When I looked over my shoulder, I saw only rocks, bushes, & trees. I took 2 more steps & so did it. When I looked this time, there was a very large, angry, shaggy*** bear at about 10~12 yds. I had only the short leaf as any type of defense. I calmly turned and walked back down the trail. The bear did not follow. That was the last time I’ve ever been in the woods unarmed.

Not very creepy, but was scary at the time. We were heading up to Indian valley to camp over a long weekend. Me, my wife, our 3 year old daughter and my buddies mom get up to the area around 9:30pm. Now I am towing a pop up and still need to set up camp for my family, so we pull into a nice flat area I turn on my light bar and get out my flight to check out the spot. As soon as I start looking around I hear “white power” and “get out of here” followed by gun shots from 100-200yds away. I can’t exactly get out of there very quickly so I grab the ar and do a mag dump into the hill side, to let them know I am armed as well.

No more noise from that camp the rest of the night. Turns out they were some teenagers. Pretty funny when they came and asked me to help pull them out of the mud the next morning.

Fishnhunt, to fully grasp the experience and how I responded, one must realize where we were. Look at Google maps we were on Canadian hwy 8 about midway between Inuvik and Fort McPherson. This place is beyond remote, there was no phone service, nearest place to find RCMP would be Inuvik a day away. We decided to leave it be, because the women were missing only a couple of hours, we had no proof of foul play. We were also concerned how our report would play out in a foreign country, especially with just my assumptions. If we had heard screams or saw something we definitely would have said something. To this day, I Really believe I was only a second away from having my throat cut and my family dumped in a ditch for grizzly food. A lot of women disappear up in those remote areas especially the First Nations women.

As mentioned, I had two experiences on our trip up the Dempster hwy. We were flying from Tuktoyaktuk to Inuvik in an 8 passenger twin engine prop plane. We encounter clouds and lose visibility of the ground below. BANG sounded like a grenade went off! Plane shifted as if the right wing had hit something. This is an open cockpit no door between pilots and passengers. We could see the instruments, red flashing lights, the pilots quietly whispering to each other. One pilot turns around and says, “we apologize for the inconvenience, it’s going to take longer to get back. We lost an engine so we have to fly on one.” We had no visibility, it started raining, red lights blinking, pilots whispering to each other. I was never so glad to land. We get into the airport and I strike up a conversation with an airport facilities worker and tell him what happened. He said the two pilots are considered “cowboys”, and are about to be suspended for their risky flying.

I was at Camp Robert bunked out under the stars on our cots. I heard the SGM snoring loud, then about 15 more all around me, I poked my head out of my sleeping bag, a small herd of wild bore was walking through the camp. I stayed still, the SGM woke up, and called my name, I said keep quiet. They passed through, I couldn't sleep the rest of the night.

I’ll be god damned. You had a hallucination! That is a scary story.

About 30 years ago a friend and I were shooting squirrels one afternoon in the badlands area just east of Moreno Valley. We had pulled off of the 60 and then drove in a few hundred yards on a dirt road. We were shooting across a draw with a slope behind us. Suddenly out of nowhere some loud shots rang out behind us. We both turned to look and saw a twenty something year old white male wearing camouflage and carrying a CAR-15. He had his face painted with camo and what bothered me the most was the look in his eyes. The guy struck me as an absolute nut job. He laughed, said a few things about being a better shot and then just continued hiking on foot. We were both shaken by the incident and by the fact that we didn't see him until he was right on us.
