Best way to thanks CHP officier?

I had a minor fender bender couple hours ago. I called CHP. CHP cruiser car showed up right a way. Collected all parties information and offer to stay behind me to provide vehicle cover until tow track shows up. I'm picking up report tomorrow and would like to thanks the officer. I think I have his id on the card. How do I go about doing it? Thank you.

You could just go to his station and thank him personally, depending on jurisdiction.

Contact his/her Watch Commander so a thank you can be put in his/her personnel file.

And for the yearly eval also. That kind of thing gets looked at when a supervisor is doing it.

Written can be done in addition to the verbal appreciation directly to the W/Commander.

Write a nice letter addressed to the station he works, mention the officer's name and that he did a good job for you. A copy will go in his personnel file and the officer will get a copy to keep.

Sidenote, traffic accident reports generally are not released to the involved persons for about 10 business days after the accident. I'd bet that if you went the following day, the officer had not even written the report yet. They usually aren't turned in for supervisor review for 1-2 days.

So many folks won't hesitate to call and complain about getting a ticket they deserve, so its tremendous when a citizen calls to commend an officer for a job well done. It's usually expected that cops will be perfect, so when they ruffle someones feathers, that's the only time the admin hear about their officers. Thanks for taking time to make a difference in that officer's day.

Citizen commendation is better than any other department commendation.

I'm not sure food is a good idea.
My wife wanted to take a dozen to the station after the cops hauled off our drug dealer neighbor. My first thought was that these guys are always on alert, and they have no clue WHAT might be in a gift.

Ya... A written thank you note is the best way to go.
A gift card sounds like a good idea, but that actually entails disclosure paperwork on the part of the recipient. Even a vendor buying me lunch has to be disclosed, and would be brought up if there were ever any accusations of favoritism by a competing vendor.
So I only accept lunches from vendors that I don't buy from

Maybe for a few hyper-sensitive "Tackleberry" types, but really if the food is from what appears to be a good, hard working, honest citizen who just wants to say thanks.......it WILL get eaten. We get food delivered all the time from local businesses, church groups, service clubs and citizens who want to show support. It gets eaten, I assure you. And the cards that come with them, stay in our briefing room for weeks....sometimes months. WE do APPRECIATE the support.

Gift cards and such are a little "stickier" because of some department "gratuity" policies. No on expects an officer to "turn in" a cookie, or doughnut or something like that.

That's just my opinion and my experience with my one agency (about 23 years now)

Absolutely.....I'm a supervisor and my opinion is if a citizen or outside agency takes the time to give one of our officers any kind of "attaboy" it goes in his/her file.

this-is..it will not effect promotions, but will look good in their file for annual reviews.
