How to run your rifle and optics.
Data Development – gathering actual data for your rifle and load.
Trigger Time – You will shoot from 200 to 1,000 yards. You will have an experienced coach on the firing line to help you with ballistics, wind calls, and getting DOPE out to 1,000 yards or as far as your equipment will allow you to safely shoot.
If time permits we will cover rifles, caliber choice, and equipment.

Required Equipment
Rifle chambered in 6 mm up to .338 caliber.
Tactical rifle scope with ranging reticle and elevation knobs.
70 rounds of ammunition.
Empty Chamber Indicator Flag (you can pick one up during registration for $1.00).
Rifle Sling.
A backpack or shooting bag to carry all your kit in.
Bipod or pack to shoot from.
Rear rest or sand sock is strongly recommended.
Note taking gear.

We will have water available on the firing line and in the target pits.
You may want to bring snacks that you can eat on the go. Lunch will be provided.
Please have your rifle zeroed at 100 yards. All of our drop data is based on a 100 yard zero.
We walk the entire range for all distances, including a return to the target pits from the 1,000 yard line.
Make sure your gear is mobile. Practice setup and re-packing of your gear beforehand. Things move fast as we go from one line to the next and you need to be ready to move.

Sounds like fun, I've never shot at 1,000 yards.

That would depend on its intended use. In Precision Rifle, we don't use spotting scopes for Long Range. We do use spotting scopes to spot impacts when shooting steel matches, but that's not the shooter who is on the scope.

If you are shooting F-Class, then a spotting scope is widely used, especially in F-Open or F-TR. (F-Class guys feel free to jump in here to expand and clarify). From what I've seen when I've shot a few F-Class matches, I think I've seen primarily angled scopes. I shoot in the Tactical class, so I just open my bipod, drop the rifle on the deck and shoot, I don't use a spotting scope - but that's just me. If you're scoring at an F-Class match, then you would need to be on a spotting scope.

Hope this helps.

The intended use is to spot hits at long distance range or BLM when I go out and shoot with my friends, to help each other make corrections as spotter. Plus mirage observation to determine wind condition.

Nearly all F-Class shooters have angles scopes, but it is purely preference. Some do not have one at all when they shoot.

In F-Class, we use high magnification on our rifle scopes. Having a spotting scope for watching mirage and other shooter's targets as they come up and down is beneficial, at least for me anyways.

The only difference is that when prone, the straight spotting scopes are a bit harder to use. It can be done though.

Here is a picture that gives you an idea of how some scopes are set up next to the guns during a relay.

the wind clinic occurred yesterday. it was a great clinic. just enough wind to make it challenging, but not extreme that it made it hard to coach. we had switches, angle changed and pickups and letoffs. no consistent wind really, which is the best conditools you can ask for in a wind clinic.

Unfortunately yesterday I was at a match so I couldn't attend. When is the next one?

Somehow watching a 338 LM getting blown all around at 2k has made me reconsider the need to brush up on my wind reading.

With a 6.5 rifle, should I get 120gr elm to make the wind reading more challenging? Or 140 gr?

Being a rookie :

140 should resist the wind better

120 will be there faster so less impact of the wind

Try both and see what your barrel likes . . .

Good suggestion, except that I would not have a range to try it at 1000 yard until I go to the clinic

Most of the regulars on the 1000 range at sac will shoot 139s, 140 and 142 grain projectiles.

The advantage of the smaller 6mm cartridges in say a PRS setting are typically for recoil mitigation so follow up shots can be taken much faster. The primary calibers seem to be the 6x47 lapua, 6mm creedmoor, 6XC and 6 Dasher. If recoil mitigation was never a concern, then I would suspect shooters would be choosing larger calibers to get better ballistics.

In F-Class, the 6mm are used primarily for the same reasons, but the consensus is that the 6mm cartridges are just inherently more accurate. In mid-range, the targets are small and in many cases the match winner is determined by the X-count. This means that a gun needs to be consistent in 20+ shots. The primary cartridge is a 6 Dasher or 6x47 lapua for this game.

That being said, for long range (600+ yards), smaller calibers have a hard time against the 7mm. The 6.5 mm cartridges have a harder time as well, but can be overcome by shooting a 6.5mm bullet really fast, like in a 6.5x284. The downside is barrel life. Stick with the largest caliber you can shoot with the heaviest bullet and shoot it at a decent speed and you will fair better in the long range game.
