Default A Zone Opener.

My nephew and I went out for the Southern A Zone opener, rifle season. It was beautiful, we got to just north of Ojai at about day break. There were very few hunters, we hunted about 37 miles of highway 33.
One thing I came away with is that this is extremely difficult country to hunt. We explored canyons, we glassed, pulled of to flat brushy areas. Cover is almost impenetrable, we found many bedding areas but no deer.
We did see two does, we snuck in behind them to see if there were any bucks nada. The area we were in was from Tule Creek north. There are very few fire roads in the area. So if one pulls over to a pull out, you are met with a wall of brush, or a steep hillside, or both.
The stream beds were dry, and very rocky. There was evidence of very heavy rainfall this past winter. The beds were cluttered with a lot of debris, logs, brush etc. Saw a bit of bear scat, some tracks. I also purchased my bear tag this year.
I took my Christensen Arms Mesa in 6.5 Creedmoor out, what a joy to carry. Extremely light, well balanced, best bolt rifle I have ever owned. A2

Yep, sounds like A Zone. Seeing does is a lot better than most. That was more or less my experience today, and I was on private.

Took a buddy with me opening morning at FHL. We went to a remote canyon and sat above a well used deer trail. Saw two does move through around 6:30 AM. At about 7:30, we saw a small group of pigs working there way toward us. My buddy had never shot anything but birds before, so we decided we should go for it. We slipped in closer and he took this nice little 80 pound sow. After the hunt, we talked to a bunch of other hunters. Story was the same....very few deer seen.
