Stolen gun was recovered, have it inspected?
Six years ago a friends house was burglarized and his glock 21 was one of the things stolen. He was notified today by chp that his stolen gun was recovered. (Someone had it on them when pulled over by chp). Chp told him that he would be able to come pick it up in a few days, should he take it to a glock armorer and have it inspected, or what should he do with it?

Yes I would have it thoroughly inspected and replace all springs and parts.

Who knows how many bodies are on it after being in the hands of scum that long. I'd sell it and get a new one. Bad juju bro. I wouldn't trust that it's clear.

I wouldnt worry about crimes committed. There is a documented time frame of when the gun was not in his care.
I would certainly get it checked by an armorer as im sure the guys who stole it didnt maintain it. I say be thankful it was recovered. Get it tuned up and shoot it like old times. |

+1 with AdamVIP..
Any crimes related to that weapon that was unsolved would most likely result in them keeping it for evidence. If its being released, I would assume its run clear. I would tear it down, clean it and shoot it and if something breaks, fix it. Same as you would if you had it the whole time... |

How can they return it without a LEGR being filed by the owner?

If the firearm has been reported lost or stolen pursuant to Section 11108, a law enforcement agency shall notify the owner or person entitled to possession pursuant to Section 11108.5. However, that person shall provide proof of eligibility to possess a firearm pursuant to subdivision (e).

not all agencies are aware or, or possibly care about, the LEGR. I know of cases where the agency has just handed back a firearm to the owner that would normally have required an LEGR, it happens.

People keep bringing up superstitious aspects of this gun, as if there is some cosmic evil aura attached to it. I thought a gun was just a tool?
Don't people always say that guns aren't bad, it's the person that is holding it that may be bad? |

Take possession of the gun, then shoot the criminal scum who had it. All bad juju will be gone. That's what the witch doctor said. Wait we live in California, since you can't do that, get rid of the gun it's bad juju.

I'm not sure what the deal is with all the superstitious stuff. I would have it freshened up, replace anything that needs to be, and start racking up the rounds. It's back for a reason, use it!

After it was stolen he bought another one, I offered to buy this one from him, besides if it was used to shoot anyone I like to think that it was used to shoot other scumbags. That cancels out the bad juju

If your friend has replaced the gun, he should get this one back and put it up for sale through our CG marketplace or put it on consignment at the shop of his choice.
In this market, he will get plenty of takers. He can sell it at a good price and suggest the buyer have it gone over by a gunsmith.

Keep it and have 2.
I imagine the stolen one is going to look beaten up. That's the perfect one for 'beater' use. Keep the nice one when you're taking your girl shooting and you need one that's purdy. |

Exactly what I was thinking. At our local Neighborhood Watch meeting, the cop for our area ran over the list of crimes. He mentioned a few shootings, and that they were all gang-related on both sides of the incidents. Someone in the crowd raised a concern about increased violence, to which I remarked "yeah, but at least all the right people are being shot." This was our first introduction to the neighborhood, my GF was not happy with the opend-mouthed stares I got. The cop, however, laughed and agreed with me.

Love how so many people are saying "it's bad juju, so go pawn it off on someone else".......
If it's truly that "tainted", then the suggestion should be to sell it during one of those "gun buyback" programs and have it melted down. And I don't know if there's any sort of centralized database out there that's a repository for ballistics data. If there is, I'm sure the LE agency that recovered it already ran the ballistics to determine if the stolen piece can be tied to any other crimes. |

It's not bad luck at all! It's good luck, it found it's way back to your friend!
If it was used in a crime, it's been through the cops already so your friend should be OK. Still, stealing a man's gun and using it as your own is almost like cheating with his wife. Sucks, but it was his gun to start with and it's his again. I wonder if the OP's friend's home insurance paid out for the gun already? I would look the gun over personally. Not sure if a smith is needed. Then go shoot it. |

I wouldn't say for me it would be superstition, it just would leave a bad taste in my mouth and I'd always remember that my gun has been violated/stolen before haha...just like if you get your car stolen and you get it back...its never quite the same!

Just tell your friend to strip it down and give it a good cleaning. I highly recommend listening to Peaches & Herb at the same time.

I'm not sure if his insurance covered it or if he even made a claim, he didn't have much in his house at the time, I think all they took was his tv Xbox with a few games and his glock and an old rifle his dad gave him.

Really guys? How many used guns have you bought not knowing what the background is? Why is this any different? I could go shoot someone and then put it on the marketplace here and you would never know.

I wouldn't even swap the barrel because that serial number could have ballistics data of the original barrel.
If there is even a small chance that the gun could be linked to a homicide regardless of the timeframe it wouldn't be worth owning IMO. A series of circumstances regardless how remote and false could create a "probable cause" that could turn your inocent life into a living hell. |

Quote:
As long as the gun was reported stolen to the point when it was picked up with the barrel change, the gap of when you DIDN'T own the firearm is quite clear. I'm certain law enforcement can determine when you did and did not have the gun during that time. It's still risky though. Your call.
