Pew, pew,pew, BOOM

I just took my brand new Marlin 795 out to the range for the first time today, Shot about 150 rounds of Federal round nose bulk through it and had several stove pipes but all fired fine. Then I was like pew pew pew BOOM concussion blast to my face. My buddy sitting on my right was blasted in his face with powder. After inspection I noticed the casing still in the chamber and the whole back end of the casing was blown out. I cleared the chamber and checked the barrel and proceeded to send rounds down range without anymore problems. What the heck happened? Casing failure, issue with the gun? I was thinking squib maybe but never experienced one so

not normal but it happens. I've had 2 in the past 8,000 rounds on my 1022

Happened to me using Rem Golden Bullets in my AR-22. Last time I use that garbage in a semi auto .22.

So it sounds like the ammo was at fault and not the gun. Well that's good. I'm just glad it happened with the .22 and not while shooting the Mosin. That could have been painful

It's happened with my GSG I was using Fed. Bulk stuff...just clean off any debris and inspect then shoot.

Ya thanks guys. I wasn't phased just surprised. My buddy on the other hand wouldn't shoot it any more. Now I gotta clean it because that Federal bulk was really dirty.

From your descriptions it sounds like the round was not fully seated in the chamber when the firing pin struck the rim. The result could lead to a ruptured case and possible squib. Same thing happened to me while using a .22lr conversion kit in my AR. I was using Federal Automatch .22lr which is very reliable ammo. This is one reason you should always wear eye protection. Glad no one was injured and that you were able to continue to fire your weapon with no issues.

Your casing looks just like mine did. I would have posted a picture but it sounds like a hassle uploading them. Makes sense to think if it wasn't fully seated it would have done what it did. And Safety is always first!

Had the same thing happen 20 years ago .

I would recommend NEVER putting your left hand around the magwell .

I still have the piece of brass that blew out , in my left palm / wrist area from that day . And the empty case that shows the size of brass in my hand .

I have never put my hand any where near the magwell again .

Is all this ammo that people mentioned non-copper-washed? Leadding never the issue in semi-auto causing this?

IMO there's no significant difference in residue from copper washed vs. lead round nose.

For the billionth time.. "lead" 22lrs are coated with wax or other coatings.
Pretty much all match ammo is not copper washed.

You said the gun was new, did you clean it before you shot it? If not, that could have been the problem. When a semi starts to stovepipe rounds, its time to check what's wrong, not keep shooting. Glad no one was hurt.

No I did not clean it first. I just wanted to put some rounds through it but I did notice it was real gritty and felt like it got dirty quick. Probably was dirty to begin with.

Note to self: Clean gun first!

Always clean and lube a new gun first. Sometimes they're coated in more of a preservative, not lubricating oil, so they don't really run 100%. Also sometimes you'll get little bits of metal left over from the machining process and it's better to get all that crud out. It doesn't take long to clean a theoretically clean gun - at the minimum field strip it, wipe everything down, be surprised that there's gunk on the towel, relube.

Not gonna say that it caused the issue but..
Yea clean a 795 (and any gun) before you shoot it.
The 795 come with heavy packing oil in them to preserve them. Clean that stuff out before you use it and use a better lubricating oil.

I had a CMMG .22 upper that did this twice with CCI blazer bulk. Never happened with Federal. Also happened one time with my 10/22 but can't remember what ammo I was using that time. Oh and yes clean your new guns! When I bought my 10/22 I stripped it down to clean it and found a 4" piece of zip tie in the barrel!

Yep! Good advice for any and all new guns or guns which are new to you!

Here's my 17HMR kaboom in a Razor Magnum. I am SO glad my hand/arm was not under the magwell. It would have been a trip to the ER for sure.

Just blew the mag out of the magwell into a shower of bits and pieces. Scared h3ll out of me!

I happened to me with some Mexican made ammo. Kinda stung my hand a bit.

Had that happen with a Thompson 22 but it ignited more than one round I think it was remington yellow jacket I had few peasses of brass and lead in my left arm and shattered the mag messed up the bolt and remington replace the gun and a few bricks of ammo
