Thoughts on the M&P 15-22
Thinking of adding one to my collection. Would like to hear from people who own them. Would you recommend it?

I think it is a great gun. It is an awesome training tool if you want to familiarize yourself with the AR platform. It shoots .22LR so the cost is a lot cheaper than shooting .223 or whatever caliber your AR is chambered in.
They are pretty accurate as well, shooting about 1MOA for my M&P 15-22 MOE when I had it. Aside from that, I personally liked a little more accuracy which is the reason why I sold it. Aside from that, it is great for all the aforementioned reasons.

I haven't shot my Colt 6920 in a couple months...that's because I've been making due w the 15-22. Everything works on it except the forward assist. Shoot 300 rounds w no quilt what so ever.
Been very happy with it in my collection. |

I picked one up as an understudy for my M4 and I love it. Breaks down almost identically to an AR, mil-spec faux buffer spring tube, working controls (unlike the Colt)... I nailed steel plates at 100 yards with iron sights without even zeroing it, and went through almost 400 rounds of federal the first trip out without a single hiccup.
If you can find ammo to feed it, I highly recommend picking one up.

Nobody
I scoured the private sales board for weeks trying to get a good deal. Every LGS in the LA area told me they were back ordered and had no idea when they would get any in.

I have one and I love it. Occasional malfunctions with Remington Golden Bullet when it gets really dirty. Otherwise just awesome. With factory magazines and Mini-mags, I don't think it would ever malfunction.
Pair it with a Primary Arms red dot and you have the perfect training tool. |

The only con is that the M&P 15-22 has proprietary magazines...

I've probably shot over 15,000 rounds through mine and it's still running strong. Very accurate, fun to customize and fun to shoot. If you have the funds go for it! Just use good ammo if you have it. CCI, Federal and Aguila are all good.

I highly recommend it. It's been 100% reliable for 5000 rounds not a single malfunction (including rapid fire)...not sure how this has been possible with a rimfire...I've been running CCI mini mag, standard vel, and federal auto match. I clean it after every outing, but I've also put 500+ rounds through it in a single outing. Accuracy is good out to 50 yards, i shoot about 2 inch groups at 50 yards and i'm not a great shot.
I like shooting my 15-22 almost more than my full size...that is if/when my wife lets me get my hands on it...she's basically claimed the 15-22 as her own rifle she likes it so much (it's her favorite gun in MY/our entire collection) |

Get it. I love the magazines because you can hold the followers down. I sold my AR-22 because I hate loading the blackdog magazines. .22 LR magazines are hard to load as it is, the black dogs are just terrible. Go with the 15-22 and you won't be disappointed.

I had some friends come out from the Bay Area this weekend for a trip to the shooting range. I have a MP-15 and the MP-15/22. Identical setups on both. After a bit, everyone wanted to shoot the 15/22! ("It's not as loud!") A great rifle I can shoot all afternoon without my wallet begging for mercy! I have yet to have a FTF with several different types of ammo through it.

... I won one of them from the NRA raffle at a gunshow, so the price couldn't be beat...
I was going to give it to one of the nephews, but after trying it out that won't happen! |

At ridiculous prices..... But yes, the 15-22 is a sweet rifle. It's been shot less than the 10-22 Takedown though, the takedown is so fun and accurate!

SUPER FUN - you almost can't have enough mags loaded with ammo to take to the range - everyone wants to try it (and then they say they want one :-)
Good: Very light since upper/lower/rail all all polycarbonate. Easy to pack as a 2nd (3rd ??) firearm to the range, and easy for non-shooters to try (light, no recoil). Can take some AR parts like stock and grip (no brainer upgrades), trigger springs. Bad: Front rail is not free float, and all that plastic means for bench shooting or a shooting sling, you can affect barrel - so you might not win a target match against a 10/22 with float stock, but this isn't a bench rest gun. Front rail has proprietary attachment, so you need adapter (like tacticool22) to mount a standard free float rail (and need to be careful putting steel adapter over stock aluminum part). So a hassle if you want a different rail. ... I'd say I shoot my 15-22 as often as my AR with CMMG 22 upper. (and I sold the 10/22, they weren't getting used at all once I got these) |

Had mine for a year. It's a lot of fun and I just ordered the Tacticool22 barrel nut remover and will be getting a 'normal' free floating rail by Midwest Industries; I don't care for the quad-rail on this rifle; it will have a top rail which is fine.
I've already got a 3-9x40 scope on it (cheap Chinese scope w/illumination). I just wanted it to look different from all the other M&P 15-22 I see at the range. Get one and have a ton of fun on the cheap (ammo-wise).

Hell, the 10/22 will be an assault weapon soon.
But yes, the 15-22, very light, fun to shoot gun, doesn't feel like a cheap plastic shell around a standard rifle. |

My daughters Boy friend got one at Christmas from his dad. He was all happy when he showed it to me however he had no ammo. I gave him a brick of Federal, he loves it. We are having a family shoot on Saturday so I will supply some ammo for it, and the MK II, Rem slide (1950 I think), and the Glenfield 60.
