I've picked up quite a bit at dollar stores (Dollar General, Dollar Tree, etc). But that's a limited selection. You can usually find gauze, pads, tape, that kinda thing. Walmart and other discount chains are a given. Go with generic brands and save lots.

Leaving a gun in your trunk in LA, you, might as well just donate it directly to the gang of your choice.

One thing I am looking to pick up, is a power inverter. Converts from 12v to 110v. If the power is out, and you need to use a power tool, or any other electrical device, you could start up your car, and use it for a power source. It's kind of like the poor man's generator. It's not something you would put in a car bug out bag that you took with you if you needed to hike home. But it seems like a good thing to keep in your car, in case you need an additional power source for regular household devices and tools.

Legit lawn darts (Jarts) are getting hard to find these days. You can modify the ones they sell nowadays but nothing beats the original.

Carry whatever you like in your car, just letting you know that a cop could arrest you for possession of the brass knuckles.

Only seen it mentioned once before, and even that was a surprise to me: A change of cloths, and good walking/hiking shoes.
I wear a suit to work, and if I have to go anywhere on foot, you're damn sure I'm not going to do it in my oxfords and tie. I have a pair of work pants, and sweatshirt, some extra socks and tennis shoes in my trunk along with my gear. You'd really be surprised how often you use items like this on a regular basis. |

I cannot have a firearm at work (does you employee handbook state this?) and would hate to lose my job for even keeping one in the trunk, I was thinking a semi-auto CO2 pellet handgun. I have to research these again.
I always try to keep at least a half-case of bottled water in the trunk, and is has been beneficial many times for washing cuts, range-days, etc. Emergency food is something that I always overlook, BUT at least I have some ramen and stuff at work (time to put something in the car now). I also keep an old beat up surplus jacket in with my clothes. I've actually pulled the jacket out before when I was out and it was colder than I had anticipated. So far I haven't needed the extra clothes. But they are there just in case. You post did remind me though... Normally I wear boots every day that are waterproof but on some really warm days I've been wearing regular old pair of Nike. I should throw an old pair of sneakers in the truck too. In case mine got wet.

Whatever is in your kit, make sure it has straps that are decently comfortable for when you gotta walk!

Not to mention that you can use plenty of other perfectly legal weapons or other items to defend yourself, best not to have something that immediately puts you in the wrong because it's contraband.

People need to understand the difference between a BOB (bug out bag) VS a GHB (get home bag) Vs a "car kit".
A BOB is for longer term, one way travel. A GHB is generally a much smaller bag kept in your car that allows you to walk / get home in a day or so...generally, food, water, weapon, comfortable shoes. A "car kit" to me means car repair items. |

What if you were traveling in a remote location and had a break down that you couldn't fix or got stuck in a winter storm and all you had was what was in your car? This is actually a quite common occurrence in other states with bad winter weather, I don't know how common it is here in CA, but I'm sure it does happen since a lot of the state is remote and cell service is spotty at best. Since any kit is meant to be a 'better safe than sorry' item, I would hate to see someone neglect to have potentially life saving items into the kit for the unexpected freak situation. Especially since the items that you can put in it generally don't take up much room and can one day mean the difference between life and death.

I only have a motorcycle right now But I do keep some basic stuff in my backpack. Quality folding knife, some paracord, flash light, small basic first aid kit..
I gotta build a mini get home bag when I buy a truck in a couple weeks (ranger edge)

I have been wanting to set up some type of comm system. My daughter lives 25 miles away. So having something that can travel pretty far would be needed. Although I understand range is dependent on "line of sight" and free of obstruction.

Lots of good suggestions in here.
In addition to the knife, I recommend a can of bear spray... the distance is three times that of mace/pepper spray and works on pretty much most two and four legged critters... you could spray a pack of human attackers from 25 feet away.

In addition to the other things in your bag to keep you going, it may be really important to keep your vehicle going. The pressurized cans of fix-a-flat or similar can be a real life saver. Also if you have room a jump-start battery that plugs into the cigarette lighter can also come in handy, because you may not always have somebody around who can help jump start your car.
