Default Planning a new upper build, 6.5 Grendel. Looking for value parts.

Update 06JUN17:

Parts are all mostly in.
Leftover upper
AR Performance SPR rifle-gas barrel 6.5 Grendel with HD bolt
Syrac adjustable gas block
Larue lt-15 12 inch handguard
Larue/Harris BRM-S bipod and mount
Larue SPR-S mount with RMR base
Nightforce 2.5-10x24
Trijicon RMR-back ordered
Featureless lower with B5 SOPMOD stock and Geiselle trigger.
Desert tan rattlecan paint

Only thing I'm waiting on right now is the Pacific tool and gauge upper lapping tool. As soon as that comes in I'm lapping/bedding the barrel and putting it together. Going to cook up some handloads with Lapua brass and Hornady 123gr ELD or AMAX. Also have a couple hundred pounds of wolf 100gr for plinking.

Without a doubt this rifle will shoot better than I. Here's hoping I can put some good groups on paper!

For barrels check out www.maximfirearms.com or Brownells for excellent barrels at a good price.

See if there are any barrel group buys going on at 65grendel.com.

You can probably find lots of barrel reviews there too.

Get a good barrel. Its like buying a house with a F'd up foundation. You want the foundation to be good.

It was a joke. Reflecting how many here would rather a bargain to brag about than a quality rifle.

I think Anderson makes a 16" Grendel barrel that they sell for $99. Due to the aggressive pricing, it's almost always out of stock though.

Check here.

Edit: Found it in stock for $94 here.

Default Spinta Precision.

Folks,

Spinta Precision, hellishly accurate. They have a 20 inch Grendel barrel for $169. Type I, 7.62x39 bolt. You will never regret it. A2

You want to build a cheap rifle thats chambered in a semi expensive still-sorta-wildcat cartridge? Thats like buying a 97 civic just to drive to buttonwillow raceway every day to fill up with 110 Octane on R888 tires

Who said anything about cheap?
Value means just that-good for the money. If that means $400 for a barrel there it is, but I'm not going to shell that out for parts that are "the best" because they have a tactical name.
And I don't make my living shooting so I don't need the best of the best custom barrel. I'll be shooting a lot of Moscow match out of it so a 1/4 MOA barrel will be frankly wasted on me.
Seems reasonable to me, what's got you all riled up bud?

I've heard good things about them, but they are all OOS.

I was looking at this from ballistic advantage. I've read good things but no first hand experience with them.

http://ballisticadvantage.com/18-inc...um-barrel.html

That and the AR performance barrel. Their 7.62x39 barrel shot really well, but again I'm very inexperienced with anything past 300 meters.

I have a $500 dollar Grendel barrel that can't shoot better than 4 MOA. I have a friend with a $99 Grendel barrel that's 1/2 MOA.

Have you ever considered it might be you? Or the ammo? Regardless, bad batches and barrels happen. So does luck.

Well, we both shoot 1/2 MOA with his, and we both shoot 4 MOA with mine. I've tried everything I can load wise. The best it's ever done was 2.5 MOA.

+1 on spinta, I really love mine, great barrel all the way around. I also made sure to wait for the elander magazines they make all the difference. I would probably go a little higher on the scope magnification Grendel can get out pretty far.

On a side-note can anyone say good or bad on that wolf steel cased polymer ammo? It comes out to about the same as 5.56 ammo cost. I'm just curious if anyone knows if it's any good or if it's complete garbage.

Well AR performance SPR contour 18 inch is on its way.
Now the handguard.
I cannot find the correct KAC 12 inch freefkoat rail in stock anywhere-I guess it's been discontinued for a while.

Any ideas on s reasonable facsimile?

Without a doubt! All my rifles sand FSB have worn MI hand guards.
That said I really want to try to track down something that at least looks more like the KAC freefkoat quad rail from the mod 1.

Well I ended up with the Larue 12 inch free float rail. Got it on sale and it looks like a reasonable stand in for the KAC rail.
So thus far I've got:
Generic Colt upper
AR performance SPR contour barrel and HD bolt
Larue 12 inch FF rail
Geiselle trigger
Leupold 3-9x40 standing in while I save for the nightforce 2.5-10x36

Brake and collar are on standby till I find the .308 version in stock
Arms #22 high rings with micro red dot mount on standby for a bit.

Really looking forward to getting this thing built, but it's coming along nicely.

Looks like a pretty solid build so far, one thing I will say is you may want some more magnification depending on how far you want to get out. I have a 6-24x50 and it's great but if you want range get more magnification.

Beat of luck.

That's one part I have very little experience with.
I've really only ever shot with very low magnification optics, 4x at most.

I want to stretch this things legs though. I want to be able to use it as far as the grendel will go, and that seems to be 600-800 yards with some going all the way to a thousand.

I figured 10x would be plenty, and I like still having the 2.5/3 power in the low end (though I will have an offset micro red dot for up close). I've just been going by the original SPR specs and trying to stick to them, but that's only out of ignorance.

Edit: I should add that I don't intend this to be a bench gun. Chasing the holy grail of general purpose knock around rifle that does everything well. Most shots will be in standing and prone supported.

Well weight is always going to be an issue, the more magnification the more weight usually. I mean you can hit 500 yards with iron sights but it's mostly luck at that point and very little precision. If you want to have an all around scope perhaps 5-20x or 4-16x is the perfect mix but 9x is going to be hard to see the target let alone hit it at 600+

Perhaps hit a long range range and try or some different distances and scopes if you can.. Or just go to the gun stores and try the different magnification just to get an idea of what your are working with. Just a recommendation if it helps. I didn't realize how far away 1000 yards until I looked at it with my 24x scope and couldn't make out the target let alone the bullseye.

Best of luck.

I did that all weekend lol. Stopped at every sporting goods store around looking at various scopes. Most around here though are low end Nikon, vortex and leupold offerings.

Edit: Got to work this morning and a coworker gifted me a Leupold 4-12 VX-1. Brats tge 3-9 I had going.
I'll probably send it off to have MOA turrets installed. It's not illuminated but then again without NV I wouldn't be doing much shooting at night anyway.
